Getting rid of guns would be a huge step in the right direction. It certainly will not stop/prevent all future mass homicide attempts (which I never indicated but all of you pro-gun-pro-easy-murder-folks assumed that I did) but it will definitely make it more difficult to stage this type of event. Of course you can kill people in other ways.. but I do not see that there is ever the need to have a handgun that is reloaded quickly. (As the type that was used today was.) For all you folks who say you need your handgun/semi-automatic weapons to protect yourself.. give me a fucking break. I don't feel safe with you clowns having guns!!!!!!!!!!!! Carrie, They knew at 7:15 this morning that a shooting had happened in the dorms on campus. They knew that the gunman had more than one gun and lots of ammo. They "secured" that dorm and knew that the gunmen was not in that dorm. So.. they knew for a fact that they had an armed murderer loose on campus. Why not close classes for the day? Seriously, can you not learn the same stuff tomorrrow? Oh.. well.. you can if you're alive tomorrow. I know you've watched CNN.. well... I've talked to my friends and family in the community and we all agree that the University had the time and capacity to prevent the last 31 deaths and they did nothing. Students should have been notified. The police should have done more than just secure the one building. They've been having bomb threats for the past two weeks, they had a gunman on the loose in the fall.. they've had every reason to be prepared for a catastrophe like this to occurr and the police and the people in charge at VT FAILED MISERABLY! This could have been prevented or at least the number of people who were killed could have been greatly reduced. It is just ridiculous that nothing more was done. There was a shooting on my college campus here in Seattle a few weeks ago. The teacher of my 9:30 class was notified before class, but did not feel that any of us needed to know what was going on. We were very close to the building that that particular shooting took place and we didn't need to know?!??!?!!? I found out about it FOUR hours later when I walked right by the crime scene on my way to the library. I feel like my right to make decisions regarding my safety was completely violated by the teacher not notifying us of what happened. Schools need to wake up and take immediate actions. I know that after the first shooting at 7:15 am my dad (a professor there) immediately started calling and e-mailing students to tell them to NOT come to class and to see if they were OK. Why would any professor hold class? I can see why classes of 200 would be much more difficult to efficiently notify (except for e-mail) but an emergency alert should have been issued to the entire community (which basically consists of the school) so that people could decide to stay home. Why would a professor choose to hold class after finding out about the first shooting???????????? They had two hours. I highly doubt that all the students in the engineering building were oblivious to what went on earlier. I'm guessing some professors just didn't judge the risk of a gunman on the loose important enough to cancel class. Not to mention that just this past fall they had a Blacksburg native go on a shooting rampage on campus and kill some police. They reacted quickly to that by notifying students and immediately canceling class. If they had reacted similarly today many lives could have been saved. It's almost like they had practice for this incident and had the opportunity and the motivation to get a good plan in place... but then they failed today. I just talked to a friend who is an EMT in B'burg. Sounds likely that there will be significantly more than the 32 fatalities currently being reported. I've heard that the shooter apparently lined people up execution style and shot some of them that way.. I just can't believe that at 7:15 am someone was murdered in the dorm, at that point people were jumping out of second and third floor windows to get away. And classes weren't canceled at that point? This fucking sucks. Blacksburg is my hometown. I was born and raised there and left the town about 6 years ago when I turned 18. My dad is a professor there, but he wasn't on campus this morning. I just can't believe this happened in Blacksburg. This is a peaceful, academic community surrounded by farmland and rolling hills. But I guess with guns free to whatever fuck-wit wants one, shootings like this will continue to happen all over the country regardless of the nature of the community. I just can't believe this happened. Talking to my dad, it sounds like VT was slow to respond to the incident early this morning. If only the campus had cancelled classes upon immediately hearing that a murderer was on the loose probably dozens of lives would have been spared. God damnit. :6:1 This weekend kicked ass! Only one day was good for full-altitude jumps. I finally was able to practice flying tandem video... and I sold 2 out of my first 3 tandem videos! It was soooo sweet and unexpected to get my slot covered on practice jumps. Doing tandem video is going to kick soooo much ass. Edited to add: I definitely ponied up on the beer too. My only stand-up landing in my first 15-20 jumps was when I landed in a forest and my canopy got snagged just at the last second so I could have a tip-toe landing. I was on a manta 288 and 15 mph winds pushed me backwards on final.. it was my second AFF jump and I was on radio. It's scary landing in trees.. but damn it feels nice to drop through them unscathed!
