  1. Surface elevation and density altitude should also be considered - along with the wing loading on your reserve. Here in South Africa, where many DZ's are hot and high - we have a mandated 1:1 wing loading until 100 jumps. t It's the year of the Pig.
  2. Just dashing out to interview 450 million Africans to get a balanced opinion... Back in a bit. t It's the year of the Pig.
  3. So... 1 million deaths in three months in Rwanda didn't manage to pull the US trigger - but 50 000 over 35 years in Iraq did? Where's the logic in that? Don't get me wrong. The entire world failed Rwanda. South Africa could/should have helped, but we were busy with our first ever democratic election - something 80% of our population had waited 342 years for... and it seemed kinda important at the time. t It's the year of the Pig.
  4. I'd imagine a big sack of shit would just lie there, quietly... but I can swear I can also hear it. wait.... yes... It sounds like a big sack of shit to me too. t It's the year of the Pig.
  5. I was in a CReW team that was recovering from a scary episode where one of the members landed a wrap, but survived due to a series of odd circumstances. He wore a tersh for a while, but it caused a few problems being front mounted using the down the back rotation method. Personally, I think a main and reserve is enough, and that's after 18 chops and one partial reserve malfunction. More does not mean better. Most people are screwing themselves landing perfect canopies these days anyway - and for the rest of us, we're usually out of time before we're out of chutes. t It's the year of the Pig.
  6. Briefly - their day has come and gone due to the use of rear risers. Perhaps at some point in the future jumpers will have higher processing abilities - and so will be able to accurately find their rears without requiring a toggle guide. Trips do feel great though - and there are elements of flight that cannot be easily replicated without them. After nearly 1000 dives on normal risers after double that on trips - I still find muscle memory feeding input to a system which fails to respond to the subtlety of trips. t It's the year of the Pig.
  7. But it is an African snake - both the green and the black - and Aerodyne canopies are built in Africa. t It's the year of the Pig.
  8. Although I don't jump a Vortex 2, the company that makes them, Parachute Systems, run by Chris and Marie Dales, was called Chute Shop earlier and was established well before I started jumping in 1985. I see many Vortex 2's on the DZ every weekend, and I don't hear any complaints. t It's the year of the Pig.
  9. Read the thread title. Does it say ANYTHING about the Sabre 2? Popping up at the end of a swoop is optional. As with any wing, to get lift you need airspeed. If you put on the brake when there is no airspeed left, you will not pop up. This is your error, not the canopies. Pics attached are a conservative landing (I'm wearing a wingsuit) at 5000ft AMSL loaded to about 1.7 on my Safire 109. I'm using the full toggle range on the flare. Incidently, my current AFF canopy is a Stilleto 107 - so I'm familiar with the charecteristics of both canopies, but have only about 400 landings on Safire 1's as opposed to about double that on my Stilleto. t It's the year of the Pig.

    Classic Movies

You obviously have not seen "Attack of the Killer Tomatos II" t It's the year of the Pig.
  11. I know exactly how you feel. I'm so much shorter when I sit down. It must be the chair's fault. If some PD jumpers only learned to feel what the wing was telling them, instead of mechanically doing what they usually do, they'd land a lot better on a wider range of canopies - including their reserves. t It's the year of the Pig.
  12. I have a Mirage G4 that I use mostly for AFF dives, but have done about 100 wingsuit dives on too. When I built a dedicated wingsuit rig, I chose the G3 simply because it was cheaper. My G4 now has 500 dives on it, and there's not a mark on it, not a loose thread - nothing. I'm completely satisfied in every way. t It's the year of the Pig.
  13. That's not what I asked. t It's the year of the Pig.
  14. Do you get any odd looks at work? t It's the year of the Pig.
  15. Ahhh. No. 14 years ago I was jumping a production ZP eliptical 120 loaded to about 1.7, and I was swooping. 18 years ago I bust my femur when caught in the corner on a 270 degree turn when I was swooping - and there were many, many, many people swooping before me. Low turns go back into the Para commander and Papilon eras. t It's the year of the Pig.
  16. There are many suits which are OK for your 1st flight. These may include the Classic, S-Fly, Matter 1, Prodigy, GTI, Firebird and possibly the PHI. I wouldn't recomend the S3 as a first suit, especially not at your experience level if your profile is up to date. This would also count out the S3-S the GS-1 and the Vampire. Do your homework on a suit that will build your confidence and your skillset, and then begin to explore the realm of higher performance suits. Feel free to PM me if you want specific advice. t It's the year of the Pig.

    The ideal age...

It's right now. Everything past is a memory, everything yet to come uncertain, a dream at best. The clock is ticking. It's what you do today that counts. t It's the year of the Pig.
  21. I'd turn this down. You're not ready for wingsuits, and when you are, there may be far better designs around than the suit you are thinking about buying. As for the gear, I'd need to know what harness, main and reserve it has in order to tell if it is suitable for your current experience level. t It's the year of the Pig.
  22. I'm with you on this. If the warning bell is ringing - why should you play? The only possible exception I see to this is an AFF student doing AFF with 2 appropriatly rated AFF instructors. Sure the student must use an AAD equiped rig - but to not jump because an AAD is required whould mean few people would enter the sport. My student progression was pre AAD. SL's from 2500, 1st freefall from 2800 - a 3 second that lasted about 1, but was clearly long enough to last a lifetime. t It's the year of the Pig.
  23. Mirage sizing chart says for MXS... Crossfire 89 - Loose Crossfire 99 - Medium PD 106 R - Medium PD 113 R - Snug I don't think a 126 will go without creating other issues. t It's the year of the Pig.
  24. I used to jump barefoot a lot. I think I was inspired by the whole "Hey, Freak Brother!" thing. Then I swooped an inch too low and took ALL the skin off the top of my left foot. I jumped a while longer without shoes cos I couldn't wear them till that healed, but since then - it's always been with shoes. t It's the year of the Pig.
  25. That may well be the understatement of at least one lifetime. To be standing on a tube, not run, be forced to the ground and shot 5 times and killed by people who missed 3 times... has just got to spoil your day. t It's the year of the Pig.
