I here a lot of people say that. I asked who was gonna do pond swooping this year. I got "I'm not good enough for competition" and "Im not giving $100 to Clint" I think if there are people willing to judge and you have some sort of course or goal, Im in. I can judge my improvement myself as I go. You are never gonna get better if you give up everytime there is someone better than you. I would have competed while you had the chance. You can pull downwinders anytime. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Right indeed about not having all the answers. All I can say to my opinions is if a manufacturer claims a line to be far superior to others available and shows no proof of testing or fact, I will just wait and see what happens in real world testing. Luigi Cani reportedly landed an Icarus VX 39

Im also pretty sure he kept the weights but unhooked the riser modification before landing. But you're right, the speeds were reached under the canopy. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
I am learning a lot slamming down Red Bulls and being a vagrant in the Pro Shop, but their might be a better way than that. As far as canopy inspection goes, dont let Scott Miller out of your sight when he gets here next week. He loves to spue information until he's to tired to stand (or something like that). HMA Incident Was this the incident where he had replaced the lines with the wrong one or was this the original lines. Also it says in that post that the packer had seen that the lines were out of trim and was going to tell him. I wonder what that meant. How would yo see an out of trim brake line during a normal pack job and why would HMA be out of trim. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

That seems like a flimsy way for PA to support the "testing" they have done to change their pollicy due to a hasty public perception. I figured they would stick with their technical findings. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

The protrack will not log a jump with less that 7 seconds of freefall (counting deyployment if you are still going somewhat fast.) I have heard my warning on landing before, but it never logged a jump for it. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Luigi Cani reportedly landed an Icarus VX 39

That was with an assload of weights and some heavy riser modification. Not to take anything away from jari and vladi, but birdman flight isnt exactly freefall either. Vladi wasnt going for top speed, he was going for the dock. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
I think that is the problem some people have with HMA. It doesnt show wear like vectran so you wont know if or when it will break. I know of people who wave gone close to 1000 jumps on hma. I also have read on here of at least one who broke a steering line with I believe under 250 jumps on a canopy. I would prefer to be able to see the wear on my lines and change them accordingly. Why is PA now doing the brake lines in dacron if they believe it to not be a problem? Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Having the brakes stowed translates to quicker inflation time. There is "less" canopy to pressurize so it will start flying quicker. Im sure it also deals with having the canopy stay under control during and right after the deyployment. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

From what I understand, they will do everything except change the nose. I includes the continous hma with trim changes, stableribs and brass slider grommets. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

I can only guess. When I bought my first rig (a j4) I was told by numerous sources that the dash-m 218 was not much bigger at all than the pd-176 that I wound up buying. So I'll guess the mr-109-m is pretty damn small. But then again, I dont think Ill ever have to go smaller than my 143 or at worst a 126. At this point, my reserve is 2 square feet larger than my main and I cant see it ever having to be smaller than my main given my exit weight. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" I have always believed that the #1 factor of a canopies opening characteristics is the design of the airfoil. Packing I believe is secondary. What I mean my this is if you sort the fabric and lines, clear the stabilizers and keep the slider against the stops, the canopy will open how its gonna open. Encouraging what? The use of test pilots to push the limits of our sport? Does it seem to you that they are marketing the 39 as Luigi's everyday canopy? High performance canopies arent for everybody and I can see many "ban hook turn" enthusiasts as seeing this as irresponsible activity but in fact it is anything but. And besides, I believe the discussion was the shrinking sizes of reserves, not mains. 2 totally different ballgames. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

From what I have found rolling the nose only allows the slider a fraction of a second to get square and catch air. On some canopies, if the nose isnt rolled or hidden from the relative wind in some way, the canopy would inflate before the slider has a chance to do its job. I have about 300 jumps on a safire 209, 100 on a safire2 169 and some random jumps on sabre2 190, 170 and 150's. I prefer the safires, but you should fly both. It depends on the kind of flight you like best. I think the safire2 required a bit more to get the best flare and glide but I think both surpassed the sabre2. The only definite difference was the far superior openings of the safire2. The sabre2's that I jumped didnt open bad per say, but the safire2 opened incredibly every single time no matter what I did. Do your best to get to similarly sized canopies and go fly'em. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Ill have her post the same thing if it makes you feel better. You know what you said and that is what the problem was. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Ahh so your saying the excess was snaged on deployment of the risers past the ball. Hmmm, sounds nasty. Ill keep my excess stowed. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

My gf found this out after her expierience. She requested a demo cobalt 170 2 years ago. She was jumping a sabre 170 loaded just under 1:1 and had around 100 jumps. Atair sent her the 170. She had a nasty looking collapse just before her flare on a no wind day. She called Dan and he said it happened because she was underloading it. He said she should be on the 135. He said it flies bigger and was perfectly safe. She hung up not long after. She jumped a sabre 150 for a while and has been jumping a safire2 139 for the last 400 or so jumps. She still has no desire to downsize yet after 500 jumps since Atair said she would be fine on the 135 at 100 jumps. Yeah, that was the manufacturer. I never understood that one. If you put the rubberband on the ball on the rig, you dont need to modify your canopy at all. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

My canopy will open in time to save my life at 1000 feet. My reserve. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
I am prejudiced against the possibility that a beginner should have to load their "beginner" canopy at 1.2 in order to be safe. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

I have a piece of bungee with the black plastic ball and a rubberband on my reserve flap. I roll the slider tight and pull the rubberband over the slider and back over the ball. Works great. I was thinking of sewing a tab on the top of my rig to put the bungee instead, but Im not sold yet. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

For my own canopy, I quarter the slider, clear the stabalizers and brake lines, give it a shake and wrap it up. I think if you keep the lines in the middle, the fabric on the outside and slider against the stops, it will open properly. Good, who knows, but properly. Also getting it out of the container properly helps also. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome
