When I was at university, we had a very eye-opening role-play during a "safety awareness" thing... The moderators of the session pointed out that a single woman walking down the street would feel threatened/vulnerable if she got whistled/hollored at by a bunch of men in a car... The women all went "well d'uh, that's fucking obvious" and the men went "WHAT??? You should feel happy - it's a compliment!!" They REALLY didn't get the fear/danger a woman would feel... Both genders were surprised... I hate to sound pessimistic but I think the vast majority of people do not change no matter how hard they try. Of course there are exceptions, but they are... well... exceptional! As many people have mentioned, the focus should be on trying to find the best outcome for the children. Look and ask around for forum and/or support groups/networks and try to take steps to minimise the damage done to them. That's the best thing to do, IMO. Why is that? I think it's fairly obvious... Just think of someone who is has a severely debilitating illness... What they use/need could be far more than someone who is in perfect health, plus they have less opportunity to earn a decent living... If everyone looked only after themselves, this person would not survive. In a civilised world, this person *does* get to live, but on the back of other people's contributions/taxes/et cetera. I get that re-distribution is an essential part of "survival of the most" but basing this redistribution on your marital status does not make sense to me. Anyhoo... Whoever said fairness and tax do not belong in the same sentence is right. Just irks me in this case. Are you asking this based on French tax policies? Many of us will only be familiar with US ones. here, in the most simplistic view of income taxes, you quite often pay more as a married couple in the US if both work. This is due to the smaller standard deduction for married persons. And the Obama proposals to increases taxes on couples with income over 250, or singles with income over 200 clearly penalizes dual income couples in the high cost of living states. From what I understand, you married yanks have the option to file separately or jointly... In theory, I think this means you should either pay the same or get some kind of benefit, but you shouldn't be paying more than the singles... In France, a married couple files jointly. A person who earns little or no salary will reduce the tax paid by their partner as a consequence. Kind of odd that your spouse would be viewed as your "dependent" in a way...
