years and years ago ( waaay before the days of the cypres ) i had a pilot chute in tow. due to (here's one for the history buffs)... a twisted belly band..... NOT just a weak P C or an overly tight closing loop.... the pin on the main container PULLED.. the bag was out.. and bouncing around on my back...but the bridle was attached to my hip... i was using a piggyback H/Container,,, and going FAST.. The drag from the pc put me head low and feet low and in a spin.... Yikes i wasted a few seconds snatching at the bridle, thinking it 'caught ' on something,, then looked DOWN, and saw the peas... ABOUT THE SIZE i was used to..... when setting up Final, on an Accuracy shot.... WHOA!!!! I took an instant to throw a strong arch,,,, got flat.. and FELT the d bag, hit me on the back of my thighs... at which point i fired my Blast handle ( another one for the history buffs ) , and Bang!!!! 26 foot LoPo reserve.. the mess from my main was STILL attached to me,,, so a cutaway ( R3's ) would have worsened the situation,,, IMHO... The main stayed in the bag,,,about 2 or 3 linestows from opening... I was able to pull the bag in towards me, and stuffed it between my legs for the 500 feet or so,,,from reserve deployment to landing.... ... if you think "slow is fast".. I can testify that Fast is FASTER!!!! especially if you're under a 36 Inch parachute.. (p.c.) Things happen quick....best to be quicker.....and cutting away takes time..even if it's just a second or two.. I'm GLAD i was NOT AAD equipped at that time,, since that device WOULD have fired my reserve WHILE i was in the spin and working things out,,,, before I was READY to introduce the reserve myself... I used to pull a LOT lower than i do today.... and that situation came at the end of an 8 way jump,,, where we "held it JUST a little longer" than we should have.... ps landed that round, IN the pea gravel. jmy

the same way that i have gradually Upped my usual "pull altitude"... i have gradually Downed my driving speed....over the years... just wanna GET there....and the quickest way to LOSE the time that you THINK you are saving, by going Fast.... is to SIT on the side of the road, and wait..... while some cop meets his quota... and lays a ticket or two on ya'.. drove from western NY to florida this past january. 6 hrs on a sunday got me to D C 13 hours starting monday morning and ending 9:30 pm got me past jacksonville, up by 6 AM and into Deland by 9 AM tuesday.. visited a bit, lunch with a friend On the Dz, and then onto Z hills by 4 Pm or so tuesday did all the driving myself,,,, slept,, at my brothers' house near DC sunday,,,, then slept In the van at a rest stop south of Jax for monday night...( van has a double mattress with linens, blankets and pillows....etc... ) rest stops are well lit, I think they are safe, and have "facilities" ,,,, if needed. lock the vehicle, sleep when you're tired. drive when you're rested... the drive back was no problem, either...approx 22 hours drive time,,, two stops to sleep,, 3 or 4 hours, each time... drove to S. Carolina in June, 12 hours, straight shot, each way... no problem,, though it WAS over 100 degrees on the day we returned... gonna make the same trip to skydive city ,, right after Christmas....hope to arrive by the 29th or so. of december.... maybe stay 12 or 14 days...maybe visit a few places,,,

re : mal..... likely wouldda been cutaway, too... but that shot happened on an AFF video, ( note the student main canopy waaay up above me, off my left tail.) AND the spectre (210) did not dive and crank.... I was above 4,500 feet when that picture was taken,,, and about 2 miles Upwind of the dz. we were last out...i pulled, over 5 grand... the canopy was solid and stable and did untwist with a bit of coaxing... I was clear by 2,700 feet, and was pleased that i wasn't having to chase down a cutaway.... but true..... it LOOKS bad... jt a 3914 d12122

How Long??? TRULY?????? about fifteen MINUTES!!!! landed after # 1 SL and wouldda done # 2 the same day,, if i couldda.. but the training class which i took, had 23 or 24 people in it. soooo no chance, that same day. #2 was 4 days later,,, followed quickly by the last 3 static lines, ( DRCPs). was in freefall within 2 weeks of jump # 1... made a bunch with tbrown.... back in the days, when he lived around here.

i would suggest that YOU know what you're doing..... and so .... as long as , you don't use a large and /or heavy camera you pack carefully and deliberately you don't pull while in a track, or other less prefered body position YOU'll be fine..... However,,,, i will continue to use my PD Spectre, which snivels just right, and opens soft, and almost never with line twists....almost ( see attachment) ps please say hello to all the folks @ your DZ, for Me..... jimmy

97 jumps and a 75 to 100 dollar video camera... "mounted" with velcro?? and gaffers tape .... that's a good one.. so then, when ya' have 350 or 400 jumps??? will you THEN buy a video camera for 350 or 400 Dollars????? please be careful... keep your passion,, just temper it with some good safety practices... 3 minutes of video... with about 10 seconds ,,,, of "keeper footage"....... as promised earlier..... it's called JUST ONE there was a voice inside me i'd hear it now and then when days were warm or skies were blue or i was with a friend it started soft with gentle urges but grew and grew , in leaps and surges. til from my mouth, as if a SHOUT !! one day i said, or blurted out.... "for sure, why not?" "it might be fun" "a parachute jump!! from a plane ! just One!" i'd heard about it once or twice, and always thought it would be nice, to look way down, and float around check out the ground, not make a sound. well the chance arose, one free Fall day. and some friends and i , we made our way through what it was, one had to do, to safely make a jump, or two.. I can tell you now, it was pretty hairy the time was near, my mind unclear, and things were looking scarey... "what are you doing," "Is it safe?" "are you sure"? said that little voice inside me.. but i reassured myself, and said, " I have my head, to guide me" "for just this once , I'll do this thing, and leave a plane in flight.... and make some friends and have some laughs, and it'll be Over , by tonight". So UP i went, and out the door and to my surprise, came back for more... well it's been a while since that Autumn Day and many jumps have gone their way.. The days of fear and aprehension, are GONE my friends, there IS no tension.. NOW, jumping's MORE than Lots of Fun !!! and think, it started with , Just One.. jt circa 1978
