Re: college kids... here to get their A.... the answer is right there.. in one word. KIDS... far tooo many have been raised with the emphasis on the wrong things.. I do believe in building self esteem,,, but that is NOT done by praising every tiny behavior,, as if it has never been done before.. self esteem is the residual of proper conduct, use of good manners, and a SHOCKING concept,, that the child in question, is NOT the center of the universe,,, though many mommys and daddys today.. fail to "get it". Self esteem is created from Accomplishment and is earned,,, it is not 'bestowed'.... hate to say it, but except in rare situations, kids today are not nearly as polite,,,, as earlier generations were raised to be.. Sure Sure,,,If they are in a circumstance where their parents are Present, the behavior could be better, but cut them loose from such parental oversight, and Bad behavior sometimes seems to be the "in " thing to do.. sort of like 'shock reality'... who can be worse??/ Bring that to a DZ,,,, and you could wear out your welcome,, quite quickly. My response.... "Good riddance" jmy

Books into Films .... which worked for you?
jimmytavino replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
Which is an interesting thing. At 8 years old, did you realize the story wasn't about a man trying to harpoon a whale? It wasn't?????? THAT is all i thought the movie was about... A whaling captain, who wanted the biggest and most unusual Catch.... And Peck played the man as a very believable, but disturbed, "abe Lincoln"... never even heard of "symbolism" till i got to high School.. and THEN,,,, all that peripheral interpretation took some of the magic away from the story... I really liked Queequeg.. " he's out sellin' his heads"..... and when the bursar asks The Majestic Chieftan, to join the crew,,,, ( after a kick-ass,, audition toss of the harpoon ) and says, " make thy mark, for a one hundreth part, of the catch".. and Queequeg takes the ink pen and draws a fish !!!.. hahaha or when the first mate says,, "Dost thou go to Church, on Sunday'?? and Ole' Q... spits bitterly and hoists his harpoon to demostrate his value...and deliver his resume' I took everything for Face value, especially movies...... in fact after seeing The Swiss Family Robinson,,, i figured,,, "anybody can ride an ostrich OR and elephant" !!! things were better then,,, simpler... jmy -
Who was the idiot that creamed into six spectators in UTAH?
jimmytavino replied to warpedskydiver's topic in The Bonfire
i bet he didn't file a NOTAM.... silly sort of thing to be doing, in the first place... one could stand ON THE GROUND,,, and toss candy to a crowd... to dump it on them from the air, is asking for trouble.... I've seen a few people who buy these rigs,,, Often from someone ELSE, ( who only flew it 3 or 4 times,, and had the crap scared outta them ) have not very many,,, hours on them, and sometimes such pilots consider themselves, experts, IF they have 5 hours,,,, and a half a dozen take off and landings... anyway. do not really know the experience level of THIS guy,, but his 'common sense ' level is low... jt -

Moby Dick... the one made in the 50's ,, 1956, to be exact... Richard Basehart as Ishmael... A great variety of colorful and distinct characters, from Pip, to Starbuck, to Queequeg,,, even to the smaller parts, such as the Orson Welles' preacher character, and Elijah, the sad, cowering dock prophet. BUT the Enormity of Ahab,,,, the compexity of that man, as portrayed by the GREAT Gregory Peck...(.for which the Best Actor Oscar was won...) had a huge and strong impact on me, an 8 year old kid, watching the maginificent TECHNICOLOR world, of the open oceans... Moby Dick.... himself... or maybe HERself.... "The White Whale" !!!,,, was an accomplishment beyond the industry standards of the day... soooo that's MY choice... I had read,,,, ( struggled with ) the book, before see the film, but had not finished it,,, as i was a KID and it was a "grown-up" book.. so the movie really grabbed me.. I have it on a shelf, right here,, in a VHS Sleeve.. jt -

right.... Who Else would have been skulking around back there... HE was jealous as hell and had ALready LOst her in his life.. The severity of the injuries, led some to think,,,'hunting knife' large blade.... But as mark Furman TRIED to indicate.. he did them in with one or two.. Victorinox Swiss Army Knives,,,,, held in leather gloved hands.... and I beleive that... Furman found the empty box(es) in which those knives are sold, IN O J's bathroom.. BUt since he could not answer ONE crucial question honestly, and say, " Yes... I HAVE used the word "Nigger", and so have YOU, Mr. counselor and so has the defendant, and so have 75 % of the other people in this courtroom"!!!..... since he could not do THAT,, He was discredited, and his testimony rendered suspect...what a great defense strategy.... I have owned and carried those pocket knives for decades,,,,and let me assure You,, they ARE Damn sharp, especially when new.... and they Can do severe damage when misused. One model has a 3 inch Blade, AND a 3 inch WOOD Saw....... a wood saw for Gods' Sake... and the teeth on THAT bad boy,,, WILL tear Up... skin and flesh..believe it!!!! They open accross from one another and can both be Open simultaneously.. held in a hand which is pummelling someone,, or in TWO hands,, and they ARE deadly... 3 inches worth,, sticking out of each side of a fist... EASY to dump afterwards,,, near impossible to # 1 find ... and #2 correlate to ANY crime,,, since the SEEM so innocent... anyway Furman WAS on the right track, and the jury shoullda been concentrating NOT on the glove itself,, but on what the glove(s) was/were holding... he did it... jmy

... well i clicked on the New Yorker article , read the beginning of it...then found it to be 17 pages long...... ..Longwinded,,, just as you'd EXPECT a New Yorker to be,,, BUT.... I read enough at the start, to learn of the mans' claim that he awoke to the cries, of a daughter... If he heard her cry out... he shouldda been near enough to her, to get to her,, scoop her up, and hopefully get OUT... Maybe return, snatching the 2 others, by their PJ's if needed,, and GET Out.....!!! quick... like a bull in a china shop,,, Like a linebacker on a tackling mission,,, like a fearful and dedicated father....operating on guts, instinct, and adrenaline...not faltering , not hesitating,,, not thinking.. Just DOing...! i've never encountered such a situation,, BUt i'd figure. with fire,, Doing SOMEthing, NOW!!!!!!!is better than trying to do it, later.... fire usually gets worse,, . So... to find himself "out on the porch".. means that he failed as the guardian and protector of those kids..for THAT alone,,, he's guilty of something HE shouldda suffered smoke inhalation,, at the very least.. and tragic death, at the worst.. But he SHOULD have performed some sort of rescue attempt... Now i don't have the time to read the rest, and can't say whether he was or was not falsely convicted.....if he did or did NOT create that scenerio.... all i feel,,,, is that he failed his kids,, and from the sounds of it failed his marriage earlier,,,,,as well.... he Could have plead to the charges in return for life.. did NOT, and so the snowball runs and runs, downhill,, to eventual execution.... sad.... as to the original question posed by kallend... and irrespective of THIS case..... SURE!!! Texas, and a damn bunch of OTHER states certainly HAVE executed inncocent men... no dispute , about that. jt

Isn't THIS an interesting turn of events.... wow... as i looked at the heading of the link DSE posted, it occurred that by adding a "u" and two more "a"s, and jumbling the letters,,, a different and slightly ironic Dot Com, can be created.... oh and i double checked my newspaper to find that it was NOt the local paper, but USA Today.. which reported the traffic stop, under California. in it's daily state by state newswire reports... (one of my favorite pages of the USA Today.. paper...) i think it was Monday's issue... it would be good, if all permits, certificates, and licenses, etc ARE in place. jt

sangi. whole different thing... between filming a subject from some distance away,,, and Docking on that subject.. Better to be concentrating on the dive, accepting, that it CAN result in less than optimum 'framing'.. no big deal. we all saw KetiaO.. good work twardo.. it can take a few jumps to zero in... the camera... as for eyesight, i'd rather NOT have one... tried with and without, and having it, bothers me, and can be a snag concern.. Rather,,,,video with a natural relaxed head position and ADJUST the camera TO the helmet as needed, up/ down. right/left... to bring the subjects into center... especially for video..only. Of course use a helmet that doesn't dance around on your head,,,, AT ALL..... Ringsight, maybe... for spot on stills, or for still shots, taken while a lens is zoomed, to any extent. and that... only after substantial experience with skydiving camerawork. ... how i see it... jmy

moi?????. course not... in fact, just don't speed and/or run stop signs,,, ever !!!..is the best policy.. right???? Based on what i read in the article... seems like way more than medicinal.. I read about this my local morning newspaper, earlier, but with NO names, and "hobbies" included in the details, only 'a man' the quantity in the car and a general location... Too bad it reflects now, on an "avocation" (BASE ), which certainly does NOT need,,,,,, such an association, and the bad P. R. that goes with it,,,,, in the minds of the general public... what a shame, in more ways than one. jt

Does Madonna still do it for you? (or did she ever?)
jimmytavino replied to skymama's topic in The Bonfire
i'm ok with her songs, and some of them,,, i really like... BUT while the video was creative and very well edited..... i could do with ALOT less of the thrusting, and body touching and 'self loving' narcissism.. i suppose that stuff is "in" but too much of it.. is distractive... PLUS she's waaay too skinny, for my tastes... jmy -

Well it felt like a PLF but maybe didn't look like one...

it looks to me, like that IS the sleeve.... and that the canopy is already out of it...... what makes you think that the canopy isn't??? IF you ARE at line stretch, that means the locking stows have been undone ,,, and the containing device.. sleeve, shorty sleeve or P.O.D. has already done it's job and has blown up to the base of the M A 1 or whatever other pilot chute is on the gear, ( Grabber? ) ( Hot dog?? ) the canopy seems awfully "wide" to still be in the sleeve. just my $.02 jmy -
5 or 6 years ago, The FlyBoyz came to our DZ . Marcel T. went waaay above and beyond to invite them arrange all the details for the visit and insure the success of the event. The local freefly community including the Badfish crew were in attendence.. WHAt a great weekend.. I stood back in awe of what all those freeflyers were doing... Eli and Fritz were both pleasant, approachable, and sooo willing to share... Didn't know him well, and for sure he didn't know me,,, but we all will remember him Fondly... Vertifly said it.... "Eli WAS the best." only nothing has changed "Eli still IS the best"... may those close to him, find peace jt
