hmmmm as quick as "said blanket" is shoved IN the door can't it just as easily be yanked OUT???? ( should the need arise)... (which is remote, in the first place)... we're Not barnstorming anymore,,, in just any old airplanes... and Most ALL dz's and DZOs have become VERY diligent about aircraft Upkeep and maintaining High quality jumpships......so your time spent worrying about some imagined 'safey issue' during the take-off roll could be better used thinking about your upcoming skydive... i can appreciate your concern,,, but it could be a bit over exaggerated... jmy

RANT: What is it with people from NY/New Jersey area...
jimmytavino replied to d_squared431's topic in The Bonfire
it could very well BE the density factor, as luckymcswervy points out... the "metro NYC area" including eastward onto "the island" and west s /west to jersey.. HAS developed a certain "attitude". if you will.. the trick is to realize that, while that MAY work,, around certain OTHER New Yorkers and New Jersians,, ( is THAT what you'd call them??) it may Not be well tolerated by those outside the area.. ( when in rome do as the romans) But when YOU are the visitors,,,learn and adapt to the ways of the Locals,, where you may happen to be visiting.. -
Not anymore.... i came here to read a little, since it's a cloudy and chilly and rainy day, and i have all my chores done. i was led to this thread by it's title, and it recollected a day in my earlier years of jumping,, when i DID twist a belly band and i DID TOW a Pilot Chute!!.. and i DID roll the dice.... and i DID come up Lucky..... I had ordered a " piggy back rig" which was sized to hold my round reserve and my Round main... It was custom measured and custom colored, and included the whole package for , i think, 325 dollars!!!. It had a bellyband mounted pouch for the P C ..( which happened to be SQUARE )!! this was around '76 or '77... anyway... i twisted the bellyband when i geared up, and it went unnoticed,,, and i went on the skydive... At pull time,, I found the handle as usual, had a good PC extraction from the pouch, threw it well and Hard to my side... and right away.. i was head down AND feet down,, flexed at my hip, and starting to turn... First thought was that the bridle had snagged on the corner of the legstrap hardware, or on the buckle for the bellyband... I snatched at it, to clear it... and at the same time, took a look DOWN... well the pea gravel was right under me,, and it was about the SIZE that i was used to seeing,, when i was on Final, on an accuracy shot..!! Whoa!!... I thought ..... 'reserve'!!!, but i took a split second to get flat and stop turning.... At that moment i could feel the main D Bag hit me, in the back of my thighs.. i truly remember, thinking,,,"it's clear.. right above my shoulders,,, right NOW", and i blasted that blast handle.... Pow.. instant stop... my 26 foot navy reserve, which luckily didn't blow UP, was happily sitting there,, looking back at me, looking at it.... Now i'm noticing bridle, and crown lines, and suspension lines, all over the place,, and the main d bag, is bouncing around near my feet... all but 3 or 4 linestows had undone and so, the bag stayed closed. I got the bag up and stuffed it, between my legs and took up my reserve toggles... pretty sure, i P L F'ed the landing, and then, figured out just what had happened... That night a rigger pal, stitched a plastic stiffener into the webbing to reduce the chance of THAT sorta NONsense.... happening again..... It was purely a stupid and avoidable malfunction and i was sick and embarrassed, that i had let it occur. many friends who also had those containers, went with the re-fit as a precaution.... close call... and I felt then and feel now... that if i had just stayed head down feet down, and pulled that reserve, the chances of it running right into my dancing d bag, could have been much higher.... one quick wrap, or snag of the reserve PC , which was NOT a of " freebag" design,,, and MAN.... it coullda been.. "lights OUT, for jimmy" all my rigs, after THAT one,, did NOT have a B Band... as fortunately, gear improvements have been ongoing... I'd be REAL sure about donning any bellyband rig and real careful,,, regardless of the level of current "familiarity with the gear"... attached... jt with That rig, ( note the R3's ) and a Brand X jumpsuit.. and the "square pilot chute"... jmy nscr1817 4 stack 940

exactly..... used to be a time,, when there were NO AADs for mains,, and NO RSLs and certainly NO skyhooks.... ( " not that there's anything Wrong with them..." ) but Hell.. this entire sport was founded on PULLING Ripcords..... not throwing pilot chutes not "waiting for an AAD" not simply Pulling the "oh Shit" padded handle.. and waiting til the reserve deploys.. ( YIKES) YES pull your reserve handle !! especially in your riggers presence @ repack time, and IF possible while your large rings are hooked up to a suspended harness,,,( with back ups. to "catch " you when the rings let go)... so you can ACTUALLY realize,, where your handles will be.... AND so you can feel just how much resistance there IS on your reserve ripcord pin/ closing loop set up.... i'm not sure how much "muscle memory" factors in,,,, (that's another term,, which has become "fashionable" only in the last decade or so ) .. But Knowing what to expect is always helpful imho jmy A 3914 D 12122

jimmytavino replied to LeapingGnome's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
there is a vhs tape called 10 Spot.... copyright 1986 i bought a copy from Rogers' FB Productions.... shortly after it became available... also got a copy of The Largest Formation... both real good Bob Franzese ( whom i've never met) had a hand in the video and editing of it, i believe... very entertaining. jmy -
the religion of SKydiving the 10 commandments are. 1 Thou shalt repect and adhere to, the words of your instructors... 2. Thou shall not covet thy riggers wife 3. thou shall not lie about jumps numbers 4. Thou shall Accept and abide by, the LAw of Gravity.. 5. thou shall 'sit one out',, when the winds are honking 6. If the choice be made to downsize.... do so sensibly. 7. when in doubt,,, whip it out !! 8. Whatever the PILOT in Command Says.... Goes.. 9 . Thou shall BUY beer.. upon completion of any "first" and lastly... 10. Upon reaching altitude on a skydive, on any sunday morning.. Thou shall offer thanks and praise,,, for the beautiful visuals and sensory thrills,,,, which are about to be had... all may feel free to ADD to the list of Commandments... these are just off the top of my head... jimmytavino A 3914 D 12122

So then... "the spouse" is the step parent ???? IF so, all of that shouldda been 'worked out" Before !! the marriage..... Is the 'spouse' in this situation ....the male ?? or the female??... either way, it sounds like a breakdown in communication.... AND as pointed out.... MAYBE the Kids ARE Unlikable... or maybe the kids behavior towards the person has been Less than cordial... better work on Family Harmony... before.. "I can't stand them" turns into "i Hate !!! them.... second and 3rd marriages, when there are children in the home, can be VERY Tough,, on everyone,,, and If the kids are little, and THEY do not care for the "newbie" parent..... uh OH !!!!!! good luck to your friends or aquaintences.... jmy

less THAN 100 jumps... it's alot about one word.... distraction..... @ under 100 jumps, you have Plenty to think about, to concentrate on, to absorb, to enjoy.. in fact, that's the case waaay past 200 jumps... and IF there are lots of other canopies in the air, at the DZ you frequent......as opposed to a C182 Dz.... THEN.... please do not be in such a hurry to wear a camera... distraction,,, it can catch many many an experienced jumper,, let alone an intermediate one... jmy A 3914 D12122

your last sentence sums it up very well JohnMitchell... Kids are a fantastic creation.... but like all things, they can go sour, if not cared for, and disciplined in the right way.... and THAT is not always the kids fault... MANY MANY Adults,,, have not the sense nor the patience nor the financial wherewithall that is REQUIRED. to correctly raise kids,,,,, into caring loving decent adults.... it is an absolutely TOUGH job, and those who have longed for children and who have felt that it is their purpose in life, CAN still, unwittingly, screw things up... There are sooo many variables.. The right partner (spouse) the right environment, the right 'extended family' and a good deal of employment and finanicial stability... Sometimes kids go wrong, even in the best of situations,,, and i personally, am not a HUGE "baby advocate"... I mightta used to have been.... back 25 years ago, when things were better, the economy was healthier, work , housing, and decent schools were more readily available,,, and when I decided to become a father.... Glad i did THEN,, too.. cause it's gotten way worse nowadays... God Bless those who accept the challenge and responsibility involved to raise a child... To say,,,, "I Hate Children" is going overboard however.. Better so say " I hate the circumstances under which some children have been brought into this world" or " I hate the times which make it so hard and confusing to raise children" or " i hate the thoughtless Adults who create a pregnancy where there is little love and/or NO family unit "... we could discuss the subject.. for hours and hours on end... me??? i LOVE MY kids, and certain others,, but i DO dislike hearing of those , whose life is Sad and scarey and unhealthy and unloved.. I HATE the scenario.. But NOT the children themselves....( if that makes sense )... jmy
