  1. this can be viewed a LOT of different ways.. 1. sports are Sports!!! sometimes you win sometimes you lose.. IF the other team is THAT much better,,,, sometimes you LOSE BIG!!! S I U C C 2. sportsmanship also involves some degree of consideration... some sense of apathy for a lesser opponent and some willingness NOT to "pour it On"....if that is possible. don't know enough about this particular game... and many such events can quickly become lopsided... we DO know one thing about the Non victorious team.... They can make a free throw.... or else have at least ONE player who can "hit it from Downtown"..!!
  2. the BOLD ones seem to be the youngsters of the sport.. I.e. under 5- 10 years... Their chronological age may not matter.. it's more about the self perceived skillz. and How much they are willing to flirt with the edge of the envelope...That's the bold.. But i don't fault them... to each his own and we've all had a part of our lives where we were full of energy imagination and enthusiasm... and accomplishing certain things, led us to want to accomplish more... Oldsters, who happen to have taken up the sport in their later years.... don't automatically qualify as " Old in the Sport" They are just of advanced age, and have larger disposable incomes... hahaha The true OLD ones, are the ones who have Made skydives, with a chest mount reserve, verified by logbook entries. imo and who MAY have flirted with the Bold Side,, during the 60's 70s' or early 80s'.... If they were TOO bold.. they may not still be IN the sport . If they kept the "wild & crazy" to a sensible level.. or gradually reduced that aspect of their skydiving,,, then they could qualify as Old skydivers today.
  3. right.... i remember reading about this when it happened. I think the guy is waaay out there,, in left field... how does the saying Go?? "the man who represents himself has a fool for an attorney" disclaimer... though i have lots of friends there,
  4. the initial move, away from the aircraft... it can vary from a free flown exit, to chunking,,, from flying away near the end of a stick, to camera slots both Front float and rear float. From pre-gripped in any number of slots... to chasing the very end of a group... EVEN a poised exit, on the step of a 182...absolutely FUN I KNOW that i am waaaay up in the air, Far away from thinking about the bottom end..... hell we're still sub terminal... I know WHAT my sight view is SUPPOSED to be,,and i have learned that "ya' never Know what's gonna happen" FUN??? sure is... And when the exit comes off slick and as planned!!!! it's super fun. Cause that sets the tone... and then i hope it follows through for the rest of the dive.... BUT,,,"ya never know what might happen " ... and that Too... is fun... safety first,, and what the hell??? safety second too... edited to add....Fun is also... Reading many of skymamas posts, especially the One in this thread...! Does the Lady Understand this sport? or What!!??
  5. yes jonstark..... that was pointed out, in many reviews that i read about the film,, waaay back when... his mannerisms, timing, cadence and delivery ,, were all perfect... " I could GO,!! At ANY time" !!!
  6. may NOT have been any car chases. or Motorcycles or Airplanes.. but there was a stretch Hearse, driven by a wierd sort of funeral director, played by Crispen Glover ( Marty McFlys' father ). and an Airstream Trailer or two, and an old Ford pick-up.. very varied and interesting cast. Leonardo Di Caprio was very good, in it... Some sad parts though,, by no means a Comedy...an early John C Reilly movie,, as well. jt
  7. .... Grape... not for the first time. not for the last time. I had finished the Sat Morning paper and was on cup of coffee # 3 !!! wasn't interested in the sports scores, the various news shows, were just more of the same old same old. Long ago gave up Sat. Morning cartoons!!! and then came upon this fine movie...about half way through... Sooo many subtle and sweet scenes... "oooo, i lovvaaa that Johnny Depp.. he make-a me cry."... One of Leo Ds' earlier works... though i think,, NOT his first film... Excellent choice of setting,, Endora, casting, and of structure, for the familys' House.. His sisters were mostly kind, and sooo considerate of their Mom... the connection between the 4 kids, was real, and covered many topics that kids go through, when growing Up. anyway.. just a fine film.. Have others here, seen it?? what were your thoughts??? sappy? poignant? good? bad? jmy
  8. yes depending on age, many workers may not see any benefits. You're displaying the sort of civic concern which i ask for, from some of TODAY's recipients... and Only of the recipients who already HAVE a fair degree of investment income... I Did not mean to zero in on S Sec.. and i have more closely read the O.P. and looked at the list more carefully... Many items Do seem to be needed and important and it would be tough to lose them. Community grants and educational programs would all be missed.. But a death Gratuity??? for Congress....Federal Travel Budget,, and Agency for International Development??? some of which spend a Thousand Million a YEAR!!! lets develop This country First.. or at least TRY to fix it... Remember the "artists" and Athletes i mentioned earlier>>> Can't we establish a Tax system which differentiates HOW huge amounts of income are generated and then taxes accordingly... Revenue generated in such a way Could then be specifically earmarked for many of the items here, slated to be Cut.. Use taxes from Pro athletes Sizable taxes!!! to provide Sports and Athletics,, On the LOCAL levels,, by funding programs in exisiting High Schools. whereby all members of the community could use the facilties, say at night and when students are not there, for excersize, Organized leagues and sports programs etc.. Likewise taxes from those in the Arts industries, Music TV Movies, can be used to promote and encourage arts and cinema , in our community by financing museums, and theaters and even subsidizing the cost of a 10 dollar Movie ticket... Certain revenue streams for certain programs.... As for cuts...Maybe i waaay underestimate the need for the HUGE Military Complex that is our defense department, but there is no disputing that money is Roaring!!!! out of The Treasury because of it... 'Just an Idea'... If the USA played a Lot LESS Offense.. running here and running there, all over the world... and concentrated on Defending us... by staying @ Home, and reinforcing our borders, and "Guarding the Nation"... wouldn't we save?? a Lot of Money... Isolationism has a wide range from total lockdown, to well monitored movement among and between countries.... some level of retraction of our forces from places where we are unwanted, ANYway,,, and a hunkering down of sorts.. might be a cost saving and sensible idea...given that "We Are Broke"..( in SO many ways) The idea of a 'world order' with trade and expansion may have sounded OK 30 years ago, or else we Just bought into it ..... Sadly the reality of it is lost jobs, increased costs, manufacturing companies forced to close , high quality goods no longer available and local , state and federal economies, crippled.. On top of this, we Never seem to hesitate to send Money supplied by Hard working taxpayes... alll over the world.. in Humanitarian Aid about 1/4 of which actually GETS to where it was intended... the rest it has been shown, winds up in someones' pocket... How about This??? Maybe let's try something else..... signed, a disheartened US citizen
  9. NO envy NO hatred... at ALLLLLL i have been a hard working person for over 40 years Now.... and i Have amounted to something, thanks to that. I place No responsibility for ME... on Anyone... Nor do i wish to be asked to Provide for others.. through my mandated taxes and contributions... can you say F I C A ??? Had i been given the option to put every Dollar and every Matching dollar from Employer,, ( which in My case is one and the same.. since i am self employed ) into a secure, sound, retirement system for Me,, which gains a modest interest rate. i would have chosen that...in a heart beat Instead i had zero choice and HAD to endure payroll taxes, just like every one else... ( We NOW seeeee where THAT has gotten us. ) In an effort to follow "conventional wisdom" I bought into the IRA concept. back in the 80s' and '90s. which basically just allowed my hard earned $$$$ to get mixed into a stock system, money market account system,,, which became like a Huge Cookie jar.. into which, many of Those in the Know, regarding such things, were able to Reach, and to remove, said dollars... Granted.. i did have a say about what "vehicles" i'd choose to put those dollars, but history has shown that the majority of "money managers" did much better than the "general public" regarding such accounts. Lots of folks, thinking they WERE on track.. got simply sideswiped.. (with an emphasis on SWIPED ), by "downturns" in the Market.. Too Bad.. So Sad... I DO work. and have since i'm 14 years of age.. I've never collected unemployment,,, nor disability, nor received ANY type of Social services $$$$.. (rent subsidies, food stamps, medical assistance, etc...) i don't begrudge ANYone who has earned their way to Wealth.. I applaud them. I strive to BE them... I do have issue however, with those who enjoy wealth simply through their geneology, and prospering only because 2 or 3 generations Before them,,, did all the work...( the proverbial Silver Spoon concept).. Surely some dose of empathy and concern for the down trodden,, would allow for the Uber Wealthy to forego social security, since.. 1. they really will NOt suffer any sort of "diminished Lifestyle" 2. they May enjoy a sense of civic contribution. 3. they can help a tenuous system last just a bit longer 4. they can help many members of our national "family" to improve their lot in life.. The last quote from T. R. alludes to those whom i target in my thoughts.......The creature who does not work.... but IS at the UPPER end of the social scale... the so called Jet setters, many "Artists" " Actors" "Professional Athletes" "musicians" etc.... These folks while maybe appearing to work hard.... just seem to me to be financially compensated waaaay beyond what is proportionate to the Real Importance of their contributions... What ever happened to the concept of the "starving artist"?? Teachers, Miltary Personnel, Civic Servants, even Garbage Collectors , have much more of My respect, than say, some Infielder, or Running Back. or Guitarist, or Movie Star.... since the former REALLY Do add to the well being of our citizenry.. and the latter do NOT... imo j
  10. as long as tax cuts for the wealthiest remain... maybe eliminating Soc Security checks to those elderly with HUGE portfolios, extensive stock holdings, and /or properties should be considered... I KNOW that this is a touchy subject... but The true intention of Soc. Sec. was a 'retirement plan' for workers,, back when it was established. and i have NO problem with that.... For middle class and lower middle class folks who DID work, and worked hard, all their lives... But to give it to those OVER a certain age.. when those folks already HAVE a fair degree of wealth,,, seems like adding a cherry to to the top of their "Sundae with ALL the trimmings"!!!! while so many others have Not even a "spoonful of ice cream".. The Real measure of a society is how they treat the down trodden and suffering members of the community...especially IF those members HAVE worked all their lives.. The "haves" should be pleased to think, that they ARE helping others,,, through acceptance of a plan which limits THEIR Soc Security,,, once they have, Say... Two Million bucks... in their piggy banks.. right?? or Wrong??? i stand ready to be blasted...... jt
  11. slot perfect. no contact. nice... i bet THAT sorta of fun sucks down a few gallons/pounds of Jet A... nice though
  12. does it vary from state to state.. how about the # of guns allowed...? sorry to be so ignorant about it... j
  13. how about the person who already has a legal firearm or many,,, If they are convicted of a felony, whether a firearm was used in it's comission or not... I am guessing that they Lose those rights.. correct? what about the guns they own(ed)?? does someone go and "take them"??? do they "give 'em to their pals, do they sell them??? Does the licensing system include ANY sort of inventory of the guns that are Legally in citizens hands, here in our country....??Is there a limit on the # of guns a person can own? Or can you just go to store, show a license,, and make a purchase? can you buy more than say, three guns at a time? can you buy half a dozen?? serious questions, thanks jt
  14. we are absolutely ON the same page, here.... i do NOT know why we ( as a society ) have such a lax attitude about alcohol, and it potential BAD effects. Not sure if there are ANY good effects. I support the premise of M .A.D.D. both philosophically and financially. Change is slow...however, and our country stinks at prioritizing... jt
  15. JohnRich...this bump is timely and more than that corrects my earlier statement... and davjohns i retract the words from my post about "Gun show" I honestly believe that, those were the words used, in the 'newsflash' which brought this sad event to my attention... So i WAS wrong in that regard.. Also wrong i suppose, to accept that what i read, or hear or see in the news,, as true....... Misreporting is rampant...i should Know that. Never BEEN to a gun show, and am pleased to learn that loaded weapons are Not permitted.... Tell me then,,,, just what Were the circumstances of this occurence.. was it at shooting range? , a private residence ? a public location??? Your post here, mentions that the father, educated, (apparently Not ) and a Police chief, BOTH "failed to recognize"...the child did not have the strength"!!! say again??? I would know and You would know and most folks SHOULD know , NOT to give ANy automatic weapon to a Kid.. who is 100 % likely to squeeze the trigger , and not always when expected.... hell i wouldn't give it to an Adult.. nor would i take it into my own hands....It's a Dangerous item!!! So if this was the caliber of the supervision at this occurence,, gun show or otherwise.........i'm disappointed . It's a further sad statement as to the unpredictability of firearms in general. While You and others MAY have full and capable instincts and ability, when dealing with guns.... and i applaud you for it... wouldn't you admit, that there are lots of others out there,,, who Don't!!!! but think they do.....which is even worse. Relevant topic and I stand corrected regarding the details... but do not shy away from the intial tone of my earlier post, which is anger that a person died... jt
  16. the Last thing i thought of ,,, from the thread title. was ireland...... there IS a Dublin Georgia, I drove through it once. they had a good breakfast place!!!
  17. he talked to his 'dive masters'..... just a wild guess.... to the O P ..... when you look in a mirror, do you see 'santa claus'??
  18. oops... good point shayelk, sorry. my understanding of a dogleg is when the winds aloft are blowing from a much different direction, than the ones from opening altitude, to the ground. (sometimes there can even be a dogleg.. between 3 grand and 1 grand...) if your P I C (pilot in command) or DZO posts the winds aloft each day,,, we usually are quick to notice when the Speeds increase as the altitudes increase.. pretty common. However it's also wise to note the radials on which those winds are blowing... exit at 13-five with winds out of 270 degrees,, and winds at 3 grand out of, say, 350... and that sort of a transition is a dog leg... it can be a slight or a Huge difference in direction.. As Twardo points out earlier here, that's why it important to note the direction the plane appears to be flying, and then actually track,, what it's doing across the ground.. to get a feel for any push from the side.. Pilots are usually pretty tuned in, to that, and will compensate on jump run as needed... if however if they are flying a heading which matches the winds on the ground, lets say... and winds aloft are pushing from the side..... OR winds have dramatically Changed,, over the course of a day,,, then jumpers WILL get pushed during freefall, and could wind up well off the wind line at opening.. as for jumping "when the instructor says Go".. you'll likely be Ok because the Jump Master, has already factored in such things,, whether they verbalize that to you ,, or not... as for WDI ( wind drift indicator ), we USED to throw them all the time, but Not much the last 10 or 15 years.... I'll leave the explanation of that for another...But i will mention that one time at an accuracy meet,,, we were on a wind hold.... It started calming down and a wind dummy load was manifested.. I was on it.
  19. hell ,, there are a LOT of jumpers who do not even understand the concept of a "dog leg".... let alone how to anticipate or recognize one !!!!!! We're doing good,,,, if people can grasp the idea of freefall drift.... i love to spot, and welcome the responsibility... also willing to take my lumps.... on the rare occasion when i earned them... jmy
  20. man,,, even before the door goes up, or is opened, If i'm anywhere near a window, or near the door,,, I Am LOOKING.... checking for a rough direction of flight, a rough idea of where we are relative to the DZ, and checking in case "we are not alone"... Once the door goes Up Or is opened,,, and especially if i'm in an early climb out position,, Then i am REALLY looking... with my head WELL outside the door frame, and scanning out, around, down, and sometimes even UP... I never leave the cabin, without some decent idea of where we ARE.... plain and simple. the P I C gets us there, and signals the all clear to go....but that's where his or her part ends... when i can't personally be there to check, say if i'm in the back part of a group exit... i SURE do HOPE that those At the door are looking for me....and for ALL of us. That is how the "5 seconds between groups," should be spent, and not geeking each other or doing handle checks imho j a 3914 d 12122 POPS 3935
  21. excellent video clip..... a friend of mine sent a link to it, to me , last fall..... IF it is possible to summarize that fine airshow,,,, this clip comes awfully close... a must see. jmy
  22. Oh My DARLING Amazon!!!!! You are VERY welcome for Marshawn Lynch !!! formerly of the Buffalo Bills!!!. what a Helluva Run!!!! that guy was Struttin, and fightin' and pushin' and stiff armin' for Every yard of that fine scamper!!!! he DID show that sort of potential when he was with the Bills.... But the idiot Powers that be, here ,,, saw fit to Trade him away !!! Very glad if he was of some help,,,,, up there in the Great North West!!!! and actually Quite Proud of Him... Highlight Film stuff.... for SURE!!!
  23. " well we had a lovely birthday party, for Grace".....!! welcome home!!!
  24. somehow i knew this post was from normiss when i saw the title on the forums main page. that type of a system speaks to the quality of the place, when it was first built. That Should indicate they had high standards for the rest of the House as well, ( except for "some " of the wiring , of Course) Are all the face covers, Metal??.. As jrmrangers points out,,,stripper might be as good idea... ( I like the SOUND of it anyway )... That paint cutter can dissolve multiple layers , that never should have been PUT on , the piece in the first place,, ( It's like when a house has natural wood grained, Stained and Varnished Ceiling Crown Moldings, [/cool] and doors and Jambs, and casings etc ,,
