  1. ...ok i'll play... 'tongue in cheek' is one thing.. but suggesting putting a kid in a cage,, is ridiculous..... yeah yeah. he still got the advice from others,, but you sure present a less than attractive impression of USA skydivers..... i'll happily delete my post(s),,, if you do the same. If you really think my response indicates a stick up my ass... then you simply don't get it. jt
  2. I have been involved in skydiving and have know skydivers for a full 2/3 of my LIFE!!! and so i know that there can be some "class clowns".... and many,, with Silly senses of humor... and so i'll dismiss your post and (rather not so funny ) link.... sheesh.. The Original Poster asks a reasonable and legitimate question, regarding a Child,,, for whom he is not only showing concern but true guardianship..... and you Post ..... what you posted... For sure.. i can tell that You "ain't a father..." But since i AM,,, i'll encourage guzman to overlook your fraternity boy sense of humor.. I can't offer any information on the original question, and perhaps some of the Larger and Highly accomodating DZs May have some type of program,, with activities, and Adult supervison,, ( might not be a bad idea ) ... but to my knowledge most DZs do not.... I'd lean toward Billy's reply... If the child was 14 instead of 4,, maybe make it a trip for three,, But if the boy has another adult, local and in comfortable surroundings to the child, i'd say.. "give him a kiss and a hug,, say 'we'll see you soon', save the $$$ from his airline ticket to use for jumps,, and Go HAVE Fun... it could allow YOU to have a relaxing and unencumbered "grown Up vacation".." Take lots of pictures to share... for when you return...
  3. no but i can whistle "The Bridge on the River Kwai"...... if you like!!! jimmy
  4. ditch diggers wear jeans. a decent business machine technician, should be waaay better dressed than that!!!!!! hahaha..... jt
  5. this thread title caught my eye since i am and was an active jumper when my kids were born.... The first part of the thread is Excellent....a dedicated Dad who Loves his kids, as well as a man who IS a skydiver, sacrificing , at the request of the spouse... Admirable... as i checked the profile for flashpipe , i grinned as i KNOW the Guy to be an Honorable Person,,,in fact had bumped into him in a Hospital Lobby, on the day one of His children was born !!! His pride, was Great as was his Enthusiasm
  6. excellent !!!! mine??? 2 nights...a total of 6 hours or so. 28 college students who had just watched Masters of the Sky reported as ordered, on a thurs. evening and a friday evening.. The DZO took the $$$$$$ ( 50 bucks each) the very FIRST thing... hahahahah then we all went through the static line 1st jump course... some came back on saturday to make the jump, some didn't... i did and to quote Robert Frost, " THAT has made all the difference"
  7. fantastic photos... it's amazing, what can be done with manpower and TIME..... to see the Parthenon, live and in 3 D must be great !!! i remember hearing a story when i was a kid,,,, about Phiddippides (sp) an army messenger who RAN the news of an important battle over that marathon distance of 26 + miles... arrived,,,,, Delivered the news,,,,,, and expired..... myth?? or truth??? how long was your stay??/ thanks for sharing jmy
  8. there you go Dave... try to help out and post a sensible and thread worthy picture in an effort to answer a question..... and sometimes, people need to turn it into a "demonstration" of what they THINK they know...... and of how they are more knowledgeable about a subject, ( which has many layers of complexity ) than maybe they really are.... what we really needed... was the Complete VIDEO!!!!! of that practice cutaway..!!! hahahah petejones..... The lesson here,, just MAY be.... Follow all the teachings and recommendations of YOUR intructors... and do things as YOU were taught.... but stop short of insisting that alllll others need to follow those same guidelines... What i might Do.. is On ME... and is based on many MANY considerations which some never even THINK about... PUll PULL!!???? bang bang....??? NOt always... i'm sure... that i do NOT wanna simply get as much fabric OUT as i can... unless, i am super down & dirty, and have encounterd a horseshoe but you may do as you choose... If you pull at a decent altitude and are Gear saavy you should be able to cutaway a Mal.. And get the reserve out with plenty of altitude to spare.. BUT if you go.. Yank YANK!!! REAL quick.. AND if the Main does NOT separate.. cause you didn't pull the cables FAR enough... Now you have upwards of 2000 feet to "figure out" what to do...and sometimes THAT sorta scenario ( your main & reserve Dancing with each other...) MAY NOT be fixable....even IF you follow through and get the cables completely extracted... in fact That could mess things Up,,, even worse!!! the first step in dealing with a mal,,,,, would be to Completely LOSE the main... a weak One handed tug on the cutaway pillow, may or may not accomplish that... jt A 3914 D 12122
  9. good for You!!! you picked a Fine place to learn.... as for the friends... you will be making many NEW ones @ the dropzone. jmy
  10. and this happened ON Veterans Day??????? gimmee a break.... Racial tension???? What we NEED.. for "racial tension" ... is a Few Thousand HUGE Bungee Cords !! and if someone doesn't like how things are done HERE.. we can slingshot their ass... back to where ever the hell, they came from!!! and do it in a damn Hurry!!! what a world... jt
  11. i liked that... the music was just right. and regardless of WHEN... some things always will be , in the Eye of the beholder.. Times sure do change though,, Look how far the "Lady mechanic leaning into a car engine" pose has come!!!! (NOT that i ever Notice such things)!! fun. jt
  12. wow... and THAT ( the original post ) my friends is how rumors get started jmy
  13. Great... classic rock music when accompanied by an orchestra is usually Excellent. Had a chance to enjoy Procul Harum Live, earlier this summer. they opened for Jethro Tull.... who doesn't enjoy Conquistidor????!!!!! it sounds like a Full House Audience...was there to enjoy the show.. jmy
  14. My choice would be One of HER dressy blouses... silk would be nice... just long enough, but just short enough, Open at the collar, with maybe the top couple of buttons, unfastened,,, AND maybe the bottom couple of buttons unfastened!!!!

Bob Denver (Gilligan) really is a big hop head. No... Bob Denver is REALLY... Maynard G Krebs... just ask Dobie.... as for the original poll ..... ummmmm " What was the Question, again""??? jt
  16. right.... both civilians There,,,, and our heroic Troops and National Guard people, from HERE,,, many of whom NEVER bargained for being sent to that Hell Hole,, when they first signed up.. After watching some of G W s' interviews, AND doing so, with an open mind,, and willingness to Listen to HIS side of the story,,, I came away disgusted at the shit eating Grin... which seems to be His standard M. O. He's talking about Death, and chaos, and he's grinning....!!! hasn't ANYone ( i.e. his ADVISORS ) EVER told him, how he comes across???? his arrogance is palpable.... I can accept arrogance born of skill and /or acomplishment, But arrogance born of a self imagined capablility, bugs the hell outta me.... There is very little to be proud of GW.... Yes we were hit and hit hard, in NYC,, on 9 -11... and it was cowardly as it was bold...AND it WASS on "his watch"... However it's been claimed to be "an act of War", and so served as justification to deploy into Afghanistan... I would have thought that an 'act of war' can only be perpetrated by one Sovereign Nation,,,,against another.. Al Queda operatives are fringe radicals,, and certainly NOT any sort of Nation..... so tell me again.....how that Civil Crime..... started not One war ,, but two.... So G W Bush cares little "what people think of me"... and claims "history will write my legacy".... i wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.. But he simply helped to justify how i've felt about him, ever since his "Aw Shucks" country boy image , came across our tv news shows,,,,, from back when he governed texas... some things NEVER change.. jmy
  17. .... then.. it's mostly about flying a trajectory which is as close to parallel with the landing area, as possible???? and to Find that landing area, ( or else Create it) ...on terra firma, Someplace where the terrain already closely matches the flightpath, and where the approaches, the run out, the lighting and the prevailing winds can be monitored and kept under some degree of "control". What is the expected airspeed, say in MPH,, at the point of actually starting to alight on the ground??.. I figure, it'll be zero MPH, at the conclusion... Will the approach be belly down, or has consideration been given to a half barrell roll and a backflying position as the person and the ground coincide??? That could limit impact on the face, the ribcage and the hips. The person could then, utilize the packed canopy, as a padding,,,as long as the anticipated possibility of Opening the parachute doesn't materialize and a true landing, becomes the reality of things...
  18. QuoteIn the event this wasn't an instructional film you posted a link to , I'm just going to throw this out to the crowd again because of curiosity, does any one have any material about how a round(main in my interest) is packed for us low timers?[/reply For a cheapo.. or flat round main......in an old style 3 pin container.. Attach the top of the canopy to a stake... Find someone to sling the harness around their hips and "apply tension" Be sure the sleeve is slid completely off the top of the canopy, so that it is between the crown lines and the stake. Perform a "four Line check".. by seperating the line group from the right riser and the left riser, walking up to the bottom skirt of the canopy, reaching Under the two Gores between the line groups and dropping the suspension lines.. The 4 lines remaining, which are connected to those two gores,,, SHOULD be the Inside Top and inside Bottom, from one side, and the inside top and inside bottom from the other side... Walk those 4 lines back to the harness, checking to be sure that there are NO cross overs, and no other lines involved...If there ARE...that indicates an inversion or a step through... You have to stop, and clear that issue, before continuing.. Hold onto the bottom, inside line from one side, pulling it out from Under and out to the side, and drop the rest.. Begin to "flake" the canopy, By taking one suspension line at a time, in the order that they are attached to the canopy, and "toss" the fabric over the top, soas to align ALL the suspension lines in one hand , while the other hand does the flaking. See the posted video Of Raquel !!! as she does it Perfectly!!!... Once all the lines are accounted for, Pick up the top one and look inside,,, and down the "channel" formed by all the seams which enclose the lines... There should NOT be any fabric poking up and into that area..If there is fabric showing,, you have to reach in and clear it. Then sweep and lay the flaked canopy onto the packing mat. At this point , a "line divider" ( a packing aid , which seperates the two sets of lines, while still keeping things in order..) is handy. Lay open half of the canopy material, to form a "christmas tree" arrangement, checking carefully to be sure that EACH of the hems, especially where there are modifications, is in order, and properly oriented. Then fold each half inward, overlapping the hems and press flat. Going to the top, then draw the sleeve, down over the canopy, making sure that the sleeve itself, is not twisted, in any way... Stretch the bottom Tail of the sleeve downward over the cluster of suspension lines, and grab the part of the tail with the Locking grommets, along with a handful of suspension lines, and fold ALL of it Upwards til the first pair of Locking rubber bands align with the grommets... Put the rubber through the grommet and stow the line in it. Stow the lines into the rest of the rubber bands, and then continue stowing, back and forth, til all the lines are done.. make sensible sized bights, not too small, not too large.. then close the "linestow cover", either by it's velcro, or by it's zipper. Open the container as it lays flat on the floor, as though it was ON the jumpers back, and the jumper was face down. Grab the connector links of the risers, AND the bottom of the sleeve and draw all of that into the bottom part of the container.. Be sure that Just the right amount of riser sticks out, at the top of the container, so that it is tidy as it comes over the shoulder and to the connecting point of the harness. Now S-Fold the sleeve with the canopy inside it, back and forth into t he container keeping the folds, roughly the same size as the container is Long.... Stow any retainer line into the top of the sleeve and take the spring loaded Pilot Chute in hand. Place the base of the Pilot Chute onto the folded sleeve and compress the spring, straight down. Pull one side of the container over the other.. so that the Cones and grommets overlap, and Pin the center Cone with the Bottom Pin from the ripcord cable which had been inserted through the ripcord housing... Tidy up the fabric from the P C and IF the gear has TWO PCs, compress and place the second one, Under the container flaps. Draw the container closed, mate up the top most cone and grommet and pin with the Top pin,, Then remove the bottom pin from the center cone, and pin That set up with the center pin. Lastly close the bottem cone grommet set up and pin THAT with the bottom pin...Close the "pin protector flap" Hook Up the bungees taking care NOT to create a total,,, by attaching the hook to the "field packing eyelets"... Dress off the container so its' corners are neat. Be s ure the Ripcord handle is properly stowed in its pocket... Go to manifest and GET On A LOAD!!!!!! disclaimer.. the above details a method for Old gear... IF the round is a PC... most of the same applies, except that apex Lines and steering lines need to be dealt with during the flaking process, as they come along in the procedure..Due diligence is needed to assure that the 5 stabilizer panels on each side, are in order, and untwisted... If the canopy is in a bag, or in a P.O.D. then the canopy is S Folded, and placed into that deployment device.. and THEN the lines are s towed. IF a different container system is used.. then the closing method will vary accordingly depending on the type of flaps, loops and pins involved.. WOW I couldda PACKED 2 or 3 cheapos,,, in the time it took to describe it... BUT this has been a nice trip down memory lane!!!
  19. my answer is... All of the Above might lay out my pilot chute, just as i'm losing the propwash... ( rather than go 3 or 4 seconds.. and be in "slower air"... at which point deployment could be more sluggish ) if we were at 2 grand or lower for the exit...though... The trick on low H & Ps is to be Able to resist the temptation to extend the freefall all the way to terminal velocity... no matter how nice it feels....
  20. " I can BARE-ly remember what it's like to wear pants"!!!.. hahahahahah ! Oh MY!! what a quote you're Silly... skymama..
  21. was she wearing a baggy Jumpsuit??? pretty cool that she is ok... not sure if the parents are ok.... talk about leaving your kids 'home alone' .. i bet they won't do THAT again. jmy
  22. "if i had video i can edit ... AND add instructional commentary to slow down, and show step by step." sounds ok, in theory... but in reality just WHo will DO the commentary??...It can't be you...i don't think... unless you're rated AND experienced...or working from a script which is Composed by rated and experienced instructors... as for your perceived Dire NEED for such a thing.... That might just be, a byproduct of our current worldwide "obsession with video cameras,, and their recordings"... We are OVER saturated.... You mention, the word Free a few times.... Free = No cost No cost = of low value Low value = worthless... and yet you so seriously DESIRE such footage... .. and so you hope to take such footage and "spin it into gold" with editing and dialogue..... I admire your intentions... and such an item COULD be useful to those who wanna "learn to skydive, while sitting in front of a TV"... Better to learn it AT the DZ, in REAL time, with real instructors... and LIVE practice.. THAT approach has worked for decades and decades... and believe it or not !!! there once WAS a time where video was NOT part of this sport...the way it has become in the past 10 or 20 years.... Perhaps if NOT for tandem... the aerial videographer would be a seldom seen participant of the sport.. I know it sounds silly.. but there WAS a time when newbies read BOOKs... about skydiving,, in order to reinforce and emphasize most of the aspects of the art of skydiving.. I bet 90 % of people here,, never even HEARD... of ' The Gunby Book"...It was called Sport Parachuting.. by R A Gunby. Or the Skydiving Manual by Poynter. Or The Art of FreeFall Relative Work by Pat Works... they certainly All worked very well... ...and still would..... except that time has continued to March ahead... and i guess inevitably , some seem to feel there is a need for a Video ,,, to fix something that isn't broken.... Good luck with you efforts.. keep us posted. jmy A 3914 D 12122 4 stack 930
  23. wow... took a minute to read that report..and see the video Quite the story.. and quite the machine!! you are exactly correct normiss... about jumping out of it!!!!! cause i sure the HELL wouldn't wanna LAND in it!!!??? i get the idea, about using the ram air wing to Take OFF!!!! ( though not real solid on the "mast" arrangement) but then what??? not sure about the landing ... the 'pilot' might be able to land it,, whether it's where the pilot wants to land !!!.... could be another question. hahahah the video shows it Flying, but not the take off or the touchdown... the article said.. " this thing is about to Hit the market"... i just hope it doesn't hit toooo hard.. !!! next thing you KNOW... someone will be hook turning it,,, and swooping it.....
