  1. i can only speak for myself....and for me,,, no way could my video work jumps.... meet all my obligations, responsibilities and needs... perhaps at a Number of very busy Dz's all the hard work,,, AND 12-14 hour days...!!!! that some of the staff put in...... IS the only form of employment that they have... and for sure !!! they EARN every dollar that they take in..... For all those very special skydivers... who can arrive at the Dz with a smile,, help to introduce new people to our sport, and handle alll the behind the scenes details which are involved...as an instructor or DZo.. or even office / manifest staff....it CAN be their Full time and ONLY job.... others , who are In that position would have to chime in here ,,, to give that side of the story.
  2. QuoteHey all, I was curious what it's like to be a Camera/Video-Flyer? ***** It's fantastic... Lots of excellent visual memories... many many smiles...and the chance to re-experience any skydive which you videoed,,, whenever you like
  3. well we could actually SEE the altimeter needle climbing !!.. like it was doing double time..... following take off,,, during a jump from the 727 @ the WFFC,, Quincy Illinois... it was Aug. 10th 1994 i've never been able to witness the undeniable MOVEMENT of the needle... while still INside an aircraft , since.... jmy
  4. well, i have No brain... so i use SONY the one and only jmy
  5. good..... seems to me, that the airport, has done Just Fine..... for all these years... hell.. all these DECADES.. without a tower!!!... "if it ain't Broke.. Don't fix it".. A tower could have really complicated things there... jmy
  6. "say WHAT??!!!!!... again motherfucker" we just went through a whole bunch of one liners from P Fiction on a FB wall... of a friend of mine.. as for most ALL "reality" shows.... i always wonder... WHOSE reality IS this?? i seldom watch... jmy
  7. yes i HAVE one... cypres... i arm it at the start of any day during which i'll be jumping... on site, AT the elevation of the landing area... and just prior to to doing a full gear check before i put the rig on my back... for the first jump of the day... never have allowed it to activate... .. i try to skydive in such a way, that i will never put it in a situation where IT feels the parameters exist,,, such that,,, it NEEDS to cut my closing loop... I've found that it Always cycles,,, always energizes correctly, and always shuts itself OFF.. approx. 14 hours after i've turned it on...i'd rate it to be a reliable component of my gear... i have 4 years left.... not sure what i'll do .....then..... jt a 3914 d 12122
  8. She was on top, too. Very nice! i'll second THAT!!!!! great photo... excellent skill set and confidence levels to fly that biplane into a tight area ( or at least a "semi tight" area)...OFF the DZ jimmy
  9. thanks alot Scrumpot,, ANd dragon2 for bringing back to mind the Classic 1st jump course and Pre jump practice,,, led by Truman Sparks... I love how he was eating a couple of twinkies... while teaching... the Best part??? well besides the magnificent chalkboard lesson,,,,,,, I thought it was so cool that while Mr. Hicks is standing on a suticase on TOP of a chair,, and his feet are about 4 FEET off the ground,,, Truman can still reach Mr. Hicks' chin,, with his fingers,, to attract his attention, BACK to the lesson...
  10. i used to know a few guys who would fly what THEY called,,, 'ferry flights'....from colombia.. but that was decades ago.......
  11. there was a time when a Dozen or more people on the DZ could have been called, "that accuracy Dude"..........every DZ had a pea gravel target and if it was a 182 dropzone, then there were less issues with skies crowded with canopies, and setting up a run at the target was easy.. Places which did static line training usually had jumpmasters,, who enjoyed following the last one out, at 3,200 feet and heading for the target.. i know I did...
  12. QuoteSure would like to exit off the deck. >[url] >>then, that would be one damn Quick,, skydive... opulence is right.... i'm not seeing the mechanics of this... does the floor of the viewing deck fold UP and then, the door folds Down??.if t he deck slides in....what about the seating Inside the cabin...?? the rails are Outside the line of the door opening... so do THEY get installed afterwards??. wouldn't the interior of the cabin,, be crowded by the deck and it's components?? when the aircraft is in flight... seems like a designer was daydreaming....... and the boss said..."go with it"....hahahaha just wondering... jmy
  13. "my plan was to become Rich...i became a skydiver instead" " don't worry about it ... just stuff it in the bag" "hook up those bungees"..( realllll old time) " Hey !!! can i get a DUB of that"???....
  14. awwwww what a shame..... the women has Kids... which Complicates YOUR groove..... and when you have to deal with THAT..... you find it 'fucking ANNOYING"..???.... skymama is "right as rain"... you'd be doing the GF a favor....a BIG favor.. by ending it now.. I think YOu may be the weak link here VB... ps....NOT finding much Humor in YOUR reply to skymama after her solid & accurate advice ...and unless there is some sorta "inside joke " that i don't know about... it was kinda rude..... oh yeah... i did date a great gal with 2 children,, a long time ago. The kids were loved and usually came first.... No problems.... jmy
  15. My friend,,,, you have been blessed with both enthusiasm for our sport, and a Huge dose of motivation and ambition..... your profile tells us that you have 29 jumps, so that explains the enthusiasm and your "game plan" to make 6 or 800 jumps in 5 or 6 months shows your optimism and energy... The ratings and accomplishments which you are targeting for,,, are soooo much more than " a weekend coach course",, followed by an AFF rating class, and then throw in a TM rating class and oh yes,,,,, become fluid in video at the same time.....while packing for yourself and others, and OH Yeah... bang out that rigger rating,, too... and it's all posssible because you've saved up some money and are willing to invest it in your future profession... That is Ok, and If it makes you happy, can be a GOOD thing..... what is Missing.. however , in order to find yourself on par with existing coaches, AFF Folks, Tandem Instructors and the like.... is a little thing called savvy....(defined by Websters, as "practical know-how" ) The fine mix of experience with wisdom. The verifiable "been there done that".. the path taken which created the occurences,,, subtle and smash- mouth all of which make us what we are as jumpers...The time spent In freefall and under canopy...
  16. i tend to respect anyone who has the tenacity, the perseverence, the physical and mental toughness which is required, to serve in the military.. In todays age of 'no draft'... those who serve WANT to be there...( at least BEFORE basic training gets them) and if they can tough it out....they have earned respect... NOw the Military Hierarchy????? the ones who are "deciderers" and who manipulate the soldiers, from afar.... NOT the higher Ranked soldiers.... They are often dedicated and and truly believe ( whether right or wrong),, in the value of their missions... BUT the Civilian hierarchy,, the POLITICIANS , the so called leaders..... who push WAR as a solution,, instead of recognizing it as a symptom of a bigger problem... THOSE folks... i disagree with... Won't say i despise them.... as i try never to despise anyone. But i sure DO disagree with them, i believe that they operate with "behind the back " intentions, and only tell the 'media acceptable stories" to those of us who suffer the negative results of their sometimes foolish decisions.... jt
  17. thanks for the picture... if you're gonna have a Mal.... that looks like a good "type"... to have... Just Do Your EPs....!!!!! what the heck is the story here??? the fellow needs to STAY on the ground... AND accept responsibility for his own lack of correct action... jt
  18. excellent... thanks aLOT for that link.....skymama very good job of presenting the sport, in a nice light.... ... sidebar.. ABC's George Stephanopoulos ... is the husband of the Actress who Played "Shmoopie" in the Seinfeld episode entitiled.. "Soup Nazi"...(though I'm not sure of her name... ) now. back to our regularly scheduled discussion... jmy

  20. same here..... just like John Mitchell and Jerry B.... basically came across a link for this website,,,,found that i enjoyed it, and so wanted to register, so that i could read, and write in the forums... Was NEVER part of such a site, before,, and so had NO grasp of just WHAT a username WAS!!! as i was signing up.... i simply entered... MY NAME, when asked for a 'username'
  21. So this 60 year old Guy goes to his cardiologist and says.. "Doc,, will i live to be 99"??? and the doctor says... "well lets see... do you drink to excess?? and smoke cigars??" the guy says, "No" "do you overindulge?? lay around alot? and your only excersize is golf"?? the guy says,, "never do those things,,, and can't hit a tee-shot straight" !!! "do you drive fancy sports cars?? and Chase Wild and Exciting Women"???? the man replies, " of Course NOT!!! " so then the heart specialist says.... " Well then,, why the HELL ?? do you wanna live to be 99"????
  22. in fact the 200 jump "benchmark" is way to LOW... in the past the pure COST alone,, of a skydiving capable video camera , kept all but the most Dedicated,,, from following through on their personal plans to become a freefall videographer.... cost were over 1000 bucks.... for equipment that was far less superior to what has come down the 'technological trail' in the past 10 years or so... Often the further incentive , was to help out the DZ by stepping up to film Tandems and Affs,,, which was fast becoming a needed service everywhere..... I'm damn sure that i 'missed " many a fun and exciting skydive with my Pals, because i needed to be on jumps with TMs and AFF Instructors... still most video people were in it , to Help Out... NOT to have P O V footage,, of each skydive they made.. Then came a time where just about anybody with a few hundred jumps, felt accomplished enough for a side mount camera , while they jumped. The freeFly community laid the ground work, for side mount cameras, and for multiple camera wearers, on the same jumps.... all well and good,, IF the freefly skills were THERE,,,, If the camera was well secured, and protected on the helmet,,, and MOST importantly !!!! if the wanna be camera person had anything around 500 bucks on a C Card line of credit.. Instead of Pro type Camera Shops,,, jumpers were shopping at Circuit City, Comp Usa, Best Buy, etc and then eventually E Bay,,, and craigslist..... Today,,, with lower cost gear, smaller cameras.... and a hugely visible CROWD of jumpers wearing helmet cams... it has nearly become routine..... the status relegated to camera people 10 and 15 years ago.. has been replaced by a "so- what"?? attitude as sooo many jumpers now board aircraft.."camera-equipped".... time will tell whether the Stick-On cameras will endure.... or whether they will fall to disfavor.... either way... I'd push for for a Combination !!! of 3 YEARS in the sport, minimum AND 500 jumps...Minimum... but that is coming from a guy who had 1725 jumps over 23 years of close involvement in the sport, before ever thinking of adding a video Cam.... glad i did WHEN i did... and No regrets... But just cause some can do it... doesn't necessarily mean that EveryBody can do it.. it can also be construed as "a rite of passage"... and until one has paid at least a Few Dues..... A policy of patience.... just might be the right track to take.. jimmytavino A 3914 D 12122
