  1. Yes, but the jumper has an obvious belly wart and the main container is open. Is this some sort of test jump? What was the purpose of the pictures for PI? lots of "light - weights" used reserves as mains,,,so as to reduce bulk and gear weight. jt
  2. They were made out of a material called Taffeta. The French had to be different! right, about taffeta...And right, about the french pap.. I made over 900 jumps, on 3 different french papillons....( including my jump # 1,000 ) GREAT canopy...MUCH preffered it, over ANY PC and also over the American Pap... The apex was HIGH Porosity, the taffeta panels were much Lower porosity.. which allowed for a great "sink" mode...IF you had the horses,,, to hold those toggles,, down near your KNEES!!!!!! shot downwind accuracy all through the '70s... jumped it in a P.O.D.,,,, and at one time was deploying a square Pilot chute ( from a bellyband pouch ) to pull a Round Main, outta the piggyback container... I also loved the large Butterfly Logo, on the center stabilizer panels,, of Both sides of the French made canopy.. As for the original post.. That Pea gravel area Looked Awfully crowded!!!!! could be the jumper under canopy. was "aborting" the approach,,, only a bit tooooo strongly!!!!!! jmy A 3914 D 12122
  3. Hell.... I'll BUY the washer AND!!!! the dryer.... always wondered... whether the cheststrap went Above??? or below?? now i can know, for sure....!! p.s. That is One COOL ( and Lucky ) pilot!!!!! I bet they got 50 Grand!!!!! for altitude!!!!! jmy
  4. me too!!!!! isn't that the place where they have chili 5 or 7 or 9 different ways???? including on spaghetti!!! jimmy
  5. You, ( and in fact, ALL of us ) should NOT Die....in any way shape or form,,, for a Long LONG time.....and especially NOT while jumping...!!
  6. right the longer time goes for each of us,,, it seems the Faster it gets!!. Often, events of decades ago can feel like yesterday. your thoughts, have been the best history lesson, I ever had , about the Bridge at Remagen.. and since October IS the month for Bridges, i'm glad this thread was revived...
  7. "outside to pack it" since we never really Know what's under the blades of grass, when packing outdoors,, try to use a packing mat AND a drag mat for your container ....whenever you're outside... any chance that you can pack it indoors??? a clean carpet should be ok...stretch it out between rooms if necessary... if you're going to be stuffing it into any sort of bag, as you leave the DZ,,, straighten it out first, clear the pilot chute and bridle, and daisy chain the lines, so everything remains in order.. Once you have the time during the week to get the rig ready for your next jump,,, If you are so inclined,, pack it and then unpack it and then pack it !!! again... good practice... jmy
  8. ahhh.. i'm glad to have checked back, here.. thanks for the explanation (s) and that makes the video a bit easier to understand... so then. is the Pilot chute/stabilizer a standard PC ?? or something oversized?? Is it pulled out of the POUCH???!!! or stowed elsewhere ? After pulling and Holding a PC handle, w/ cable ( i presume) ...while doing these early level free falls,, are the students THEN taught to Throw!! a real pilot chute??? wish there were better views of the plane....
  9. roger THAT... IIRC... the static line approach to student exits , opens the CONTAINER first,,,, ( via break cord, on the OLD 3 pin or 4 pin, "cones & grommets " rigs, ) or via a tab on the static line, which inserts into a One pin closing system with a grommet and elastic closing loop..... BEFORE.. pulling the PC out. the SL was connected to the P.C. Bottom, by either velcro, or break cord.. HERE it seems that the Static Line is Pulling the P C itself outta the Pouch.... and then relying on the P C to create the DRAG, to pull the Pin... YIKES!!!!!!! am i seeing that footage the way i think....??? some of those exiting jumpers fall out of view!!!!! still towing a PC !!>>>> wtf???? jt
  10. we had an old one to share,,, between 5 kids... crashed it into Dads' garage door once,, about 40 years ago, and the crack is still there... Just had one given to me....two weeks ago,,, by a former customer, and friend, who was moving from the long time Family Home, , and was "thinning things out"... it's pretty rusty, but all the parts are there,, handle, wheels etc.. and it works just fine... it has a lot of character... might use it to tote the recycling bin out to the street for pick up days... jmy
  11. i remember seeing that Guy a long time ago, and thinking he was Pushy,,, rude to his colleagues, interuptive, and VERY full of HIMSELF.... this sounds like simply the LAST STRAW.... I bet they were tryin' to dump him, months ago.. and This rant, played right into their hands... I'm glad that they cut him loose..... never liked the guy... jmy
  12. i think the comment about the camera @ 138 jumps was meant a bit, as a joke, or "tongue in cheek".. i do However feel ya' need MORE jumps before donning one.. Cornish Chris s' comments were right ON>> ( especially the part about the skydive being ALL over the place...) it never hurts to pull a few hundred feet Higher, If the situation allows,,, than to just keep falling, thereby wasting usable and valuable time spent under canopy,, it also gives you some more time to deal with "Issues" also good point about one quick try at pulling the main pin, by hand, before cutting away...!!!! .... and the KEY here,,, IS cutting away!!!!!! and maybe not pulling the reserve..... just Yet.. instead you yank the reserve handle and toss that freebag right up INTO the main suspension lines.. yikes. WAS there any editing done here?? WHEN did the main Bag get out!!??? was it before or I think,,,,, AFTER the reserve pull??? Did you grab the freebag?? when it was right above you and pull it IN... I see the Pilot chute and bridle tugging at you, out to the side??? what happened/?? then??? were your hands and arms tied up with the freebag?? did any of the reserve Canopy material ever "Get out" ??? whoa... glad you didn't hit the ground,, any Harder!! effective Pilot Chute packing methods, and certainly checking while bagging the main, to see that your "cocked PC " ,, didn't manage to UN COCK itself....are important parts of a pack job,,, No matter WHO is doing it... Cause THAT happens a lot more often than you might think... Always check for "color in the window" not only WHEN you start,,, but also After the canopy is bagged... good luck jmy A 3914 D 12122
  13. when it comes to speed skydiving... Amazon should be WRITING the rules,, and not finding Herself being held Back, by them... and like the streamlined helmets of speed bicyclists, i CAN see where the conehead design has aerodynamic advantages !!!. so... Might as well mount a STACK of cameras inside the shell... Only thing.... watch yourself @ climbout!!! jmy
  14. good point... down and dirty IS down and DIRTY... the slow freefall speed may have complicated things allowing the bridle/p.c. to grab, in the first place.. either it clears immediately,,, or the jumper clears it, ( or cuts it away) ONLY too late.... sad... why can't someone design a molded helmet strictly FOR these small cameras... NOT as dramatic as what Amazon posted,,,
  15. in a plastic bag full of leaves, which i had raked from the front yard... it had been in my shirt pocket, and i had been working, like as if, i were an entire crew.....bending over, and stuffing 6 or 8 trash bags full... for pickup by the garbage men the next morning.... a few hours later, wanted to make a call,, and could not for the life of me, figure out where my phone was.... Luckily it was turned On, and so i grabbed the house phone, and dialed the number... wandered all over the house doing that, and finally went into the front yard,,, where i could hear the faint ringing sound of my phone, out near the curb.. Even still,,, it took lots of work, to find the correct bag, and then search through it , til i relocated my cell phone.. ever since then , when raking leaves.... i always make sure to keep the phone in my pants pocket,,,, and i make sure that the one i choose, has no holes in it... jmy
  16. .... "fool me once,,,,shame on.........me... No..... on YOU... fool me twice.....uh... mmmmm doh!!... the thing IS... you CAN'T get fooled a.. a... again...uh mmmm.. " well i sure never voted for either Bush...... but the entire country got FOOLED... big time..... by them Both..... especially # 2... what a tragedy HE foisted on this country....all in some perverted effort to redeem himself in the eyes of his father...... jt
  17. why????? to pay for CEO and Upper level Execs salaries and bonuses. to pay off the high interst loans,,, to "update" the factories to pay health care costs for workers. to pay for Liability Insurances so that when a bag goes out the door with some part of a RAT inside, they can fight back. to pay off the lawyers and pay the fines, from the last "rat suit" To pay for the outrageous costs for TV advertising....production AND airing.... I have read where the price for the Corn,,, inside a box of CornFlakes, cost LESS than the cost to Print the Box in which they are sold... Bet ya' can't eat JUST ONE!!!! @ 8 bucks or so, a pound,, i'd rather buy Filet Mignon..... jmy
  18. human powered Ornithopter... scroll down in that link, for a video.. very nice... thanks. jmy
  19. there would only be something seriously wrong with YOU... if you wanted to clean out MY closets!!!!
  20. I do. i've always done very well with road maps... and still have a Rand-McNally Atlas of the USA... which i use alot...even though it's probably 12 years OLD... Locally, my work takes me all OVER.. I have a 5 foot by 5 foot map on the wall of the office.. of My local County... ( also have wall maps of the World and of the USA, hanging on the wall.) I "dirt dive " my daily routes to be sure where I'm going, and summarize the directions in written notes so that i CAN find remote streets, roads and locations.. ( Make a right here, then a left, then another left, etc etc.) Around here, just about every intersection, either in the city or even out in the country, is marked with a road sign so that it's easy to verify that i'm on the right path... never used a GPS.. i DO remember 'trip tiks',, but only used them sparingly... and i will admit, that sometimes, if i have time, i'll Map Quest something... to see what THEY recommend.. But THEN choose my own Different route..!!!! There ARE after all, MANY ways to get to the same place... i've always had a good sense of direction, and can tell pretty much all the time, where North , south east and west are,,, ( even on cloudy days!!)
  21. you ARE joking???? right??? pull high enough,,, ( and when unexpected by others) and someone could freefall through your canopy... no joke jt A 3914 D 12122
  22. not sure WHY anyone would even touch the door, without first removing what's holding it.. blanket, shoe etc... it would only take a second , to do so... i see your point about an unexpected issue....however...sometimes peole can do the wrong thing , First... as for the fuel leak.... well that really sucks. sorry to hear it.. i bet none of those involved, at THAT moment, would say they "love the smell of Jet Fuel in the morning".... as for the door...P.I.C. should dictate what can and cannot be used to "seal the cold air out" . the jumpers may buy a lift ticket,,, or NOT...as they choose.. jt
