Pondering the perils of parenthood and skydiving
jimmytavino replied to FreeflyVan's topic in The Bonfire
what an exciting time in your life and in your wifes' life.....Since you both skydive,,,( and i LIKE the fact that She started first and your support for her, extended to the point of learning to jump as well.) You sound like a great couple.. -
Daisy Cutter full of Raid would do nicely. ..........hmmm Wouldn't that constitute use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction ??? ..

in the late 70's we were pretty successful launching a 5 cell strato star,, and then a 7 cell strato cloud...I bet maybe 6 or 8 of us did it,, in the course of the summer... It was over Lake Ontario and again over a couple of the Finger Lakes,, of Central NY... We used the normal harness container,,( reserve and all ) , onto which we rigged a 3 ring release,,, set up... attached at the chest strap...( this is one of the reasons why "the Relative Workshop is UNinsured!! ) anyway... we launched off dry ground with a boat that had some horses,,, and a spotter on each "chord" of the canopy ,, to stabilize the take off and insure that air was rammed into the front of the cells... Some guys tried getting up,, from water skis but we later determined it was better for the canopy pilot to "run like Hell" as the boat began it's acceleration . Once airborne and once the line was not under serious tension,,,the pilot could pull the 3 ring release,,, and then hope he/she would make it back to the grassy backyard where we started..... We were lucky that there were no injuries,,, I flew once under that 5 cell,,made it back to the lawn, and once under my 7 cell cloud...... The canopy pilot would pop some brakes,,,, ( evenly of course ) as the take off was completed,, and it would cause the canopy to climb,,,,and then simply tried to stay square in the air... The guys who drove the boat,,, were very considerate of the seriousness of the matter,, and did not over do it,, on the throttle,,, and only did gentle easy turns... Even so.. I had a real hard landing under the 7 cell,,,, over the water... As the boat completed a 180... I started sliding off to the side,,, I countered with opposite brake,, but was in a sliding descent... I picked my legs up,, and "smacked " the water with the back of my right leg and with the right side of my butt... it was a good spanking,,, and people on the shore SAW it and then a couple of seconds later,, HEARD it ..hahahah.. I had a bruise the size of a football, on the back of my leg but otherwise was ok....( I was a bit tougher then than i am now... ).. We did wear a skier's life jacket under our harness,,, " to facilitate any recover operations" hahaha I DID decide however that that would be the last of my parasailing "adventures".... " Get away with it a few times,,,, and soon you build up the silly idea that you'll get away with it , all the time."... I knew better and so i quit while I was ahead... " Anything for the entertainment and amusement of my friends"....... Never have tried a "conventional" parasail ride... though my daughter did once,,, In a tandem set-up,, with one of her friends while on vacation,,, and said she loved the view.....

Raven 120 loaded at appx 1.54 He chopped the main which cleared as the reserve was deployed. ......damn... sorry to hear this... BB...what happened to the p. c. in tow????? If Mike cutaway,,,, wasn't the pilot chute still snagged on him somewhere.... or was it an uncocked pc.. which had the pin pop,, when the reserve took,, and then all the main components left him...what gives???? damn... he has been so excited about trying out the new Kodak ( Rochester NY ) 14N... heal quickly.. heal fully....... jaytee

...besides the assorted buzz jobs,,one Otter landing really impressed me.... The pilot parked that otter onto the parachute landing area,,, right past the pea gravel. and had it STOPPED,, in about 75 feet... Kicked up a divot or two, as well... Early on in the days of CReW... while many of us were still jumping rounds,, I was using a round,, and my buddy docked on me from below with a strato-cloud... he had to bury the brakes to stay compatible with me.. and we flew that for a few thousand feet,,, but it was really "sinking'. I also witnessed TWO PC's in a canopy stack, with a couple of lightweight jumpers flying it.... Those guys,,Rick Costa and Tim Cawley,, brought it right down to the deck, After getting positioned relative to the wind, they landed one after the other about 10 meters from the pea gravel......

I hate to burst your bubble...and keep in mind I am a huge Pistol Pete fan, but he was lousy in the pros. In college, yes, he was the king, but his play in the pros was below average at best. Look up his stats sometime. Even beyond the stats, his play was mediocre at best. Ask anyone who follows the game. .... good... cause you haven't burst my bubble... Some stars flash and fade.. Some innovators are often unrecognized and misunderstood, even as they create change... At LSU, it's true... he really, "put fans in the seats" and he opened some peoples' eyes....In the pros.. maybe it was a different story... I'll agree. Sometimes a players' accomplishments ( or lack there of ) are a reflection of his teammates abilities, ( or lack thereof )as well... But the man carried some demons on his back,, and since I and probably you, never grew up as the son of his own basketball coach,,,how can we understand what goes along with that... To call this guy "mediocre at best ",, to justify that comment with "stats"...... tells me that you sir,,,,, are No Huge Pistol Pete Fan..... that is all.... carry on.......

Your loyalty to the Sixers'... is admirable... You must be from Philly..!!! ... but if you or I,,,, were 7 foot something!!!! we likely could have dominated as well...... ..As for Micheal, and Oscar,, Larry Bird,, or Others.... Few of them would have known what to do with a basketball if not for the true best "PURE" basketball player of all time... who played when most on the list were still children!!! Press's boy.... Pistol Pete Maravich... He INVENTED the behind the back pass.. the "look this way, pass the other way assist".. the "between the legs dribble" and Pete was draining 3 pointers,,,, years before there was even a Line.. for it..... he's the best... and Like so many of the greats.......Pistol Pete was gone, at way too young an age... please add him to the list.... only at the TOP... now... who is Tracy Mc'Grady,,??,, and don't even get me started about Kobe..!!...

....same here... Only I took the week off and flew to So. Cal to go skydiving w/ my pal tbrown... as for some of the others... JFK.. I was in 5th grade and had been sent by the teacher to the 4th grade classroom to deliver some papers... I was standing in the hallway after knocking on the door,,, because the intercom had just come on,, with the radio reports,,being "patched" into each class...and no one would answer the door... Callenger.. I was on the way to a jobsite to install a power door opener, and intercom system for the front door... Got the work done,, despite a heavy heart...and prayed all the way home,,, that Pres Reagan was gonna hold a press conference that night,,, and have all the astronauts come out in front of the camera,,, declaring,,, that "Our NASA program,, has always provided for an impact proof,, encapsulated cockpit in each shuttle....." COMPLETELY impact proof.... and with the ability to fall back into life sustaining altitudes,,, before a series of parachutes would open to allow for a sea rescue,, from the atlantic...... alas,,, that was a dream on my part... and not to be. 9-11. A couple who are near and dear to me had suffered the crash of their C 172 as they returned from the 2001 world freefall convention,, in early august.... He was back at home and she was due to return,,, but was operating from out of a wheelchair.. I had a vertical accessiblity lift loaded into my truck and was heading to their house to install it in anticipation of her return home..... When I left here... the first tower was on fire.... During the 30 minute drive, the south tower was hit,, and the north tower had fallen.... Discovery.... at home .. cause there is no skydiving that time of year on a saturday,,,, around here.... heard the reports on the TV....didn't want to believe it.... duplicate post.... needed to correct inaccurate date of earlier post...regarding 9 - 11...

sonofagun.......I was sad to hear about your ankle heal quickly... You sound ( from your various posts ) like the type of person who BELONGS on a dropzone.... so I am happy to hear that you plan to visit there,,, even if it will be a while 'til you skydive again..... Resist the urge to grab a Tandem student harness,,, at least for a week or so........... good thing there are no metal detectors to go through,,,,, prior to boarding a JUMP plane.. . take it easy ... take some time,,,take drugs.... jimmyt
