Hi, how's it going? What kind of car is it? Year/make/model? This info would be helpful but I'll give it a stab anyway. How did the mechanic determine it "may just need more freon"?? Did he hook up a set of gauges to check the high side/low side pressures? This will tell alot about what's going on with the system. If not, he's just guessing. Some newer vehicles have a low engine coolant (antifreeze) sensor which if it senses low coolant will shut down the ac system to keep the ac compressor from putting more of a load on the engine. But if it is low on refrigerant, then there has to be a small leak somewhere, refrigerant doesn't just disappear. Yes, the dye will show where the leak is if it is at a spot you can see when you open the hood, but if the evaporator is leaking or the leak is somewhere not in plain sight he'll have to use what's called a "sniffer" to find it. The answer of "my engine had to work the compressor harder" is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. I don't understand what he's trying to say. Who knows, maybe the guy was just trying to put it in laymans terms or something. And yes, NO freon (refrigerant) would mean no ac. If it were low on refrigerant it could still work, just not as efficiently & you should hear the compressor cycling on & off rapidly. Let me know how it goes, I hope I was able to help!!

Now that school is starting back up, this is more of a rant/public service announcement for you parents/relatives of young drivers. Sorry. Here's the story...a couple hours ago my starving college student nephew calls me on my cell phone & says he was just rear ended by someone. After making sure he was ok, I asked the usual questions. "Did you get the other driver's insurance info?" "No" "Their name, driver's license number?" "No, they didn't speak English." "Tag number?" "No" "Did you call the police, are you & the other person still at the scene?" "No, I'm calling you from where my girlfriend works." "WTF??? From WHERE??? WHY DIDN'T YOU GET ALL THIS INFORMATION??? IT WAS THEIR FAULT--THEY REAR ENDED YOU"!! "I guess I wasn't thinking, I wasn't sure what to do." AAAAARRRGGGHHH!!! He stopped by to have me take a look @ the damage, just cosmetic damage to the rear bumper but it could have been a whole lot worse. But now he's gonna have to pay to fix it himself or turn it in to his insurance company & run the risk of getting his rates jacked up. So...I guess the point I'm trying to make is to educate the young drivers in your household to know what to do if they're ever in a similar situation or accident. You can bet your ass he knows now!! Also...pick up one of those roadside emergency kits from Costco or Wal-Mart that has flares, first aid kit, etc. put it in the car & make sure they know where it is & what to do with it. AAA has a lot of good info on the subject, I'd do a clicky but I don't have time right now. Anyway, that's it, I'm done. Thanks!!
