  1. Presbyopia isn't related to corneal thickness Assuming your eyes are in perfect focus at distance with the glasses/contacts/lucky bastards who see clearly uncorrected, the lens system of the eye must change shape to change to a near focus point. Just like changing the focus point of a camera by changing lens placement. The cornea is not a dynamic part of the eye. It's actually the lens inside the eye that changes shape due to the movement of the ciliary muscle. Unfortunately, with the accumulation of birthdays, the lens of the eye becomes less pliable, so no matter how much that muscle contracts, the lens will not change shape, and thus focus point will not change from distance to near. 2. LOL!!! Damn, you want it all It sounds like just wearing glasses for distance (or bifocals) is probably the only option that is even remotely palatable for you. You could do monovision refractive surgery, one eye distance and one near. I don't recommend that though since it screws with your depth perception. If you were willing to deal with the contact phobia, there are bifocal contacts that can be worn up to 30 days non stop (though I recommend leaving them out at least 2 x a week). 3. That was Griff and his mangy hyena helmet. It's the protec that started it all. Now there are about 20 of us Edited to add pretty picture Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  4. Nope, ya have to have your own furry helmet. But, as Chambersburg's Beer Marshall, I wouldn't say no to any extra beer fund cash Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  5. Did you know that Chambersburg is 'home of the Pelt Heads'? Let me be the first to invite you to join our merry crew. The rules.... get a protec. Cover it in some form of fur (mine is hot pink with orange highlights). Make a jump with an existing pelt head. Donate $10 to the beer fund. And presto, you will be a pelt head too, complete with membership card and member number. Jen Pelt Head #2. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  6. It wouldn't have caused SIDS with us... he always put time with me first and I never asked him to quit jumping, so it worked for 2 years fine. Of course now I wonder what the hell took me so long to give it a whirl
  7. Well, my husband was looking more longingly at the sky than at me some weekends, so I knew I had to give this jumping thing a fair shot, with student loan payments, money is tight, so this was the only feasable way to do it that I wasn't doing just one jump every couple of months. I wouldn't mind buying hunks of tickets... my husband would be delighted if I slipped in the shower and couldn't use them.. then they'd be all for him Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  8. That's what I did... saved up for a year, and paid for all of AFF in one shot. Saved me a couple hundred bucks to do it that way as a package, plus I wasn't worried about where the money for the next jump was coming from. I had saved enough for gear too. Glad I did it that way. 9. So next time you head to Maytown, why don't YOU wear the purple spandex with the blue stripe Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  10. Why do you think Peckerhead knows who I am even though I maybe jumped with him twice, but doesn't remember you And I'm not even hot, blonde or stacked!!! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  11. Do you really think Chad would ever part with that totally sexy hot pink and bright blue container? Nothing screams masculine more than that thing does! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  12. I guess I'm just not as forgettable as Zippo? It took me a sec to figure out who the hell Sam was He's good. Actually, he's SAMless now thanks to my seam ripper Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  13. Aren't you being a bit hard on Zippo? I jump at Maytown too occasionally, and you may not know me either. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  14. I thought that on my first read too. But skydiving does attract a wild crowd.... even if 99% of us probably don't consider ourselves 'wild'. Some do jump naked. And although it doesn't happen a lot, some occasionally slip through and jump drunk... and she has the fodder to prove it with the fatality 2 years ago at CK. I don' t like how she said what she did, I don't like her article at all, but I also can't really refute parts of it either. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  15. Well said. I wasn't there. I didn't know Reed, but making one jump still makes him a skydiver to mourn the loss of, no matter how briefly he was a member of our jumping family. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  16. Agreed. I also don't see anything in her column warranting calling her a 'cunt'. She had an opinion, she voiced it. She had some valid points. She also has no true exposure to the skydiving community, that was apparent too. What would be more beneficial... calling her names, or inviting her to the DZ for a day, maybe offering a free tandem? It sickens me to see the juvenile responses that so many have posted on this thread. How can anyone respect us as a group when a loud few make us look like a bunch of whiners who can't handle it when someone disagrees with our chosen lifestyle? Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  17. Of all the letters sent to her that have been posted here, this is the only truly coherent, respectful, and meaningful. Well written. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  18. I would kill my husband if he spent basically 3 jump tickets on a freaking hair cut. As long as he bathes on a regular basis, I'm happy. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  19. I can speak with great authority on this topic as I'm the DZ Beer Marshall. It's my job to ensure that no beerable offense goes un-noted, the beer board is upt to date with names of the offenders who owe (including offense... the more embarrassing, the larger it is written for the world to see), and the fridge is full of an assortment of beverages. And you're getting screwed out of a LOT of beer Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  21. Another option is to pay the packer during the day, and take your canopy home to pack it yourself (and practice with all week) after your last jump of the day. That way you don't have to deal with the frustration of having other people around, or be itching to get on a load instead of packing. Talk with the packers at your DZ. Most of us love to help people learn to pack and get better at it. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  22. You can't change her perspective. Not a single thing you say will alter her perception of skydiving. I know... I was the same way, and my husband was the same as you... very rarely jumping. He never tried to talk me into it or change my views. But I also noticed how longingly he would look at a beautiful blue sky some days, so I decided to give it a whirl myself. After my first jump course, I was ok with him jumping, just because of the education I received during the course. I didn't plan on getting addicted to it myself... I planned on 'just that one jump to see what it's like...' Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  23. Aaaahhh, you didn't mention the new part. Size doesn't impact that either though. The other 2 packers at our DZ are 6' ish. I'm better with new canopies than they are... it's lots and lots of practice, every day at home. You can do it!!!!!! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  24. Try shoulder packing more than just twice I'm a packer and can pro pack a tandem rig. I'm 5'3" if I stand very straight. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
