We were at a dropzone in France - near Paris, as it happens. The locals were glued to the TV, and I think were mortified at having to give us the bad news. We thought it was sad, sure, but we didn't see any reason to stop jumping! Diana's death really emphasised this weird celebrity culture sickness at the heart of society. I found the whole public outpouring of grief depressing and embarrassing - people who refuse to speak to members of their own family, wailing at the 'loss' of someone they didn't even know except as a half-real figure on TV.

That's Skyma'am to you. At least, I believe that'll be the correct form of address.
-
You could give it a go. I think it's thequeen@buckinghampalace.co.uk. Or I hear she has a Facebook page now - maybe you could contact her that way. Regarding bans, I'm thinking it's a close call which one will come first - Britain, or dz.com.

Ironically, I think there's more interest in the British monarchy abroad than there is here. In this country I'd say we have a hard core of serious royalists, but most of the population are a bit meh. I'm not really interested in the Royals or in weddings, so this story is a bit of a non-starter for me.

I'm kind of astonished how the media have picked up on this. I didn't think anyone was interested any more. It's like 1981 all over again.

Isn't it about time this thread was locked? After all, it's just a pointless parody of the one about my midge. Seriously, good on you for sorting it out. Too much stuff being thrown out these days when it could be repaired.

Wow, I'd like to have seen a high quality colour version of that photo. Maybe there wasn't one, though. 'Marine Captain Torrent'. That's a fine name for an action hero pilot, especially one asociated with boats!

Exactly. So you'll appreciate the challenge of trying to 'fix' one.
-
It doesn't have to be broken. Don't you ever 'fix breakfast'? Admittedly I don't, but then I'm not American.
-
My midge is not a midget. He's a giant among midges.

My pet midge, Mickey, has been breeding like crazy. I'm tired of getting bitten, and nobody will visit me at home any more because they object to being swarmed during dinner. I really need to get the little guy neutered, but I'm guessing it's a pretty delicate and expensive operation. I don't have any insurance for him either, in case it goes wrong. Any ideas?

There goes your inheritance.

Is there any legal punishment that's enough for this driver?
MikeJD replied to Niki1's topic in The Bonfire
Yes, and I agree with both you and Skyrider here - I hadn't properly considered his fleeing the scene, assuming that's what he did (having knowingly caused the accident). That would be the worst of his offences. But for anyone in this thread to advocate torturing or executing somebody for an accidental hit-and-run, however reckless their actions and whatever the outcome - come on, now. Seriously. -
I hope Skyline is as good as it looks like it has potential for.
MikeJD replied to turtlespeed's topic in The Bonfire
I thought you were talking about Skyline, the movie. Probably because I've never heard of Skyline chilli (unlike everyone else, apparently!) I've only heard bad things about the movie so far. Some of the reviews have been pretty damning. -
Is there any legal punishment that's enough for this driver?
MikeJD replied to Niki1's topic in The Bonfire
The distinction is often just a matter of luck, though, isn't it? I sometimes think it's odd that the result of reckless behaviour has so much influence on charging and sentencing. People drive like this all the time, and usually are 'lucky' enough to get away with it, or only to hurt themselves. Their 'guilt' isn't actually any more or less either way. In terms of punishment, if the Civic driver has any humanity at all then the realisation of having caused those deaths will be worse than anything the law can throw at him. -
Did he make it over there? If so, I'd just like to clarify that we don't all wear flat caps and talk like that.

I opened this thread hoping to see a catapult home made by squirrels.

Woah there, champ. Step awaaaaay from the flame war.

I'm a bit confused. I thought the rainbow colours were red, orange, yellow, greeen, blue, indigo, violet. Bit hard to be sure from the photo but yours seems to start with black(?), and then red, and then, um, another shade of red(?) and then seems to make a proper attempt to get it right from there on.

Friend of mine used to be very nervous while she was learning to pack. She had a little mantra that you'd hear her muttering while she was packing: "They're designed to open. They're designed to open."

agreed. ive only played the single players on all the new COD titles only once, and that was just to say i did it. i buy them almost solely for the multiplayer, and with this many options, features and challenges is pretty damn decent.

I don't like the word 'saved' in this context. These were AAD fires - many of them were not 'saves'. Otherwise the figures suggest that an average of 110 people would have been killed annually by no-pulls in the 19 years since the Cypres was first available - and presumably most of those 2,100 fires have actually occurred since AAD use became the norm, which is a significantly shorter period of time.
-
Are we still talking about C4?
-
I'd think you'd need to consider the potential for premature deployment during the skydive and particularly on climb out. You wouldn't want something like that hitting the tail. Obviously it's possible for parachute AADs to fire accidentally, but those are pretty sophisticated and expensive devices. How big would the drogue need to be? By how much would you be looking to decelerate the ball?

Yeah. "Hope I die before I get oh, too late."
