That brings up a long disscussion. I will try to shortcut through it, as best I can, to answer your question. When people used to ask me where I was from, I would previously say from Spain. After all I was born there and all my family descends from there. Many people didn't like that answer. Once they got to know me they would say my attitude was Cuban, the food I eat is Cuban, and my accent when speaking Spanish is Cuban. Saying that you are American to another American in the U.S., I think comes across like you are either ashamed of or know nothing about your ancestry, neither of which I want to subscribe to. Now if I meet somebody how detailed I get, when answering this depends on how much I want to explain or how much I think their intellect is capable of handling. If I am talking to some stupid ass redneck, at a dropzone in Monroe, GA who is saying that the election mess in 2000 was because of Cubans in Miami couldn't read English (this actually happened), I will probably just smile and let him wallow in his ignorance. Typically they just think I am Italian if they haven't seen my last name. And if they can't tell the difference between a Cuban, a Mexican and an Argentinian, why bother trying to enlighten them. I appreciate the attempt. But in order for humour to work there must be some truth in it. Cubans are special by definition, we are never illegal in the U.S. If you want to learn more about that google, 'wet foot dry foot'. I would ask what experience you have to judge this. I mean inorder to draw such conclusions you would have to have been with all these guys that you find unpleasant (sexually). Some people are clearly unattractive and some are hot, and typically people know where they stand. To suggest its all in the eye of the beholder is to be in denial. Don't misunderstand me or go nitpicking saying well some people think Heidi Klum is the greatest looking while some think its Stephanie Seymor. That is not what I am referring to. When you can find two people who can absolutely swear honestly that they like Rosanne Barr's appearance more than Heidi Klum's then we can debate this further. The reason I attribute somebody's bad attitude to their being ugly is because of the self-hatred thing that often gets in the way.
