  1. Roger Nelson avoided most of those problems by buying the land for building his own airport and DZ, along with adjacent lots which he sold to jumpers and DZ workers for their own homes. There's still one Farmer McNasty to the NW, but his land is quite a way from the landing area. While this takes huge sums of money to do it is the best way in the end. As long as you get full aproval from the local zonning before you build there will be little they can do to stop you once it is built. As for Mr. McNasty if the DZ owns some extra farmland around the landing area and then continues to lease it out to a farmer he will have a lot of friendly farmers around because they will all be fighting to rent the land from the DZ. I think SDC has some land they rent out now, and I'm sure the farmer who is renting it wouldn't even think of spouting off to anyone who landed off the DZ. Land use in genneral is becoming a real problem in this country, skydiving is just a small part of it. People need to stop looking at open land as a potential development instead of a recourse that is totally irreplaceable.
  2. I have softened my anti-Hillary stance in the last few years because she really is doing a good job in the Senate. However I think we need a totally fresh face. As someone else already said too much going back and forth between two families. 20 years of basically two different leaders is enough.
  3. This is what one of the best parts of Couch Freeks is. The people of Ft Dodge IA really seem to like having us come there, why I don't know but, they do. I have never met an unfriendly person around town when there. I think they truly want us to come back every fall.
  4. You already have the cheepest most abundant suply of food in the world, what else do you want. Food checkout day is February 2nd this year I believe. That means that the average American has earned enough by Feb. 2nd to buy all the food they will need the rest of the year. So you have 11 months of income to spend on everything but food.
  5. I'm surprised, I thought everyone in KS was real friendly. I do think it makes a differance though even for tamdems. If they just stand around all day not talking to anyone else and clueless as to what the fun jumpers are doing they totally miss the whole skydiving experiance. When this happens it is almost certian they won't come back even if they loved the jump. I wish I had a great idea as to the problem of student retention but I don't.
  6. Just over a year. Although I lived in the same house when I was a little kid and then spent about 30 years next door in my parents house. So I would say I have spent my whole life in the same place.
  7. Got to agree. Knowing there names and making them feel welcome and like they are going to be one of the gang goes a long way. I know a couple times I thought about giving up durring AFF (since I didn't have as much time as needed to be devoted) but, I had started to make friends and felt welcome every time I showed up to the DZ. Then when I did finnish AFF manifest anounced it over the loud speaker (everyone we now have another one of us, Marc Krieger just passed his AFF check dive) Everyone came up and congradulated me and it made a big impression.
  8. Because contrary to the popular belief of people from NY, the rest of the country doesn't revolve around NY or NYC? Yeah, that's probably it. I feal exactly the same Dave. Don't let anyone give you shit over this, almost everyone I know up here in WNY thinks NYC should be a differant state so we don't get lumped in with them.
  9. I think he is probably the Dems. best chance for a real majority win of the White House. I know very little about what he has done or where he stands but here are some of my thoughts. 1st He is from the mid-west a place where the Dems. have lost big time the last two times. 2nd He dosn't have a big bag of political baggage comming along with him. 3rd In the media almost every week weather or not he deserves it or not, and almost always positive. The media seems to really like him. 4th He is not Ms. Clinton which is something the Dems. seem to be looking for and is there only other real big name right now.
  10. Hey I can teach fencing. Oh wait you said the sword fight type, not the barb wire and post type. Oh well all this new found culture you won't remember us little people anymore.
  11. 0-3-0 A good Sunday for the first weekend of the year in NY.
  12. Sorry I only know oil furnaces and LP grain dryers. I am happy to say though that I haven't used my oil furnace yet this year after installing a corn burning stove. Good luck
  13. Give me a call, I'll PM the number. I would recomend J.C. Crandal he repacks mine most of the time and is a very good rigger and does a lot of the work around here.
  14. Well since it hasn't snowed here yet this year and it's suposed to be warm for the next week or so, maybe I should drive out and plow for you. The fleet 96 Chevy with 8 1/2' plow 03 Chevy with 9' plow 8' snow blower for the back of any tractor with enough power Would work for as many jumps as you can provide
  15. Depends which DZ I go to. Either 55 or 80 miles.
  16. Welcome back!!!! I was wondering if you would ever be back when you left but sure enough you are. See you next summer at Couch.
  17. I think it is expensive but, so are most sports that require some piece of equipment. I will use snowmobiling for an example. A decent sled will cost from $3,500 to as much as $9,500 and that could be new or used. Then add a helmet for $50 to $450. You then need close a suit will cost from $250 to as much as $1,200 for full leathers. You don't see many people out riding with Carhearts and an old open face helmet. Add to this a trailer to haul it around and then the gas to ride. On a good weekend day when we have snow around here you can pull into any bar or restarant along a trail and see dozzens of sleds parked and very few of them are complaining about the cost of the sport.
  18. I'd never use shingles again unless it was totaly necessary. I had a dark green steel roof put on my house last spring. It went right over the old shingles and there is no more noise from the rain than with the old shingles. Also had a steel roof put on a barn just last week. Shingles just don't seem to last as long as they used too and blow off in the wind. As for installing a steel roof it is very simple. The sheets come 36" wide and come cut to the length you order. The ridge cap and trim edges are all pre made. You just screw it in place with the self tapping screws that come with the roofing. Hope that helps.
  19. I think they already have one at Paradise Skydivers in Vinton IA. I jumped there Porter a few years ago, what a great place. How the Hell can you get lost in IA? All the roads go either east-west or north-south and you can see for miles. Must just be the farmer in me but, IA is heaven on earth.
  20. An arc welder is the best thing to use, but I'm sure you don't have one just sitting around. Be carefull with heat tape. There is a reason why they call it insurance tape
  21. Maybe they should apologise for the revolutionary war as well. I had ancesters that were killed by the red coats and I want an apology.
  22. i know I don't hear as well as I used to. I probably should be more carefull around the farm. All day on a loud tractor isn't good for the ears. Could also be the corn dryer that is howling away just outside my bedroom window. I have also been told that freefall is not good for the ears. Certianly the planes noise isn't good either. I guess I'm just doomed
  23. 0-0- One combine stuck in the mud so bad we can't get it out with a bull dozer. A 4-wheeler that quit a mile from home. A flat tire on the back of a tractor and to top it off my cousin put another tractor through the top of his septic tank It's been a long day, just glad it will be over in a couple minutes.
