At one point in time, those loops were all the rage coming from a DZ in Alberta. Before I became a rigger, our DZ rigger put them in every set of gear. You had to tighten them every month or so. I later changed all the loops back and never had a problem with loose reserve loops again. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Uh... Well that's news to me ... Anyway, the Pile looked like a 70's pornstar. The new hook (which was sewn over the old hook) did nothing to fix the problem. Later, the new hook was picked off and new pile was put on. It worked fine with the old hook. Freebag? But they cost $120! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Had a rigger who noticed my velcro needed replacing. He replaced the hook and left the old pile. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

A couple of things to consider, without a main, the skyhook has no advantage. Skyhook notwithstanding, the Racer has amazing reserve deployment time. I've seen an ad that shows a 150' deployment from cutaway. Racers also have great options on chest strap and handle placement. In an ideal IAD student exit, the pilot chute is released just off to side of the jumper. It should be roughly the same distance from the body as a normal pilotchute deployment. This is opposed to the direct bag static line method which experiences "sail effect" after it leaves the bag. There are pros and cons to all the systems. D-bag static line is unnatural (sail effect), PC assist opens the container with the PC in the vicinity of a flailing jumper(horseshoe) and IAD students can tangle in PCs causing total mals, potential horseshoes and the previously mentioned sail effect. The biggest drawback to IADs is that the instructors have to know thier shit. Bad and slow throws and poor reactions to unpredictable student actions will increase the likelihood of bad situations. The biggest plus to an IAD is that a competent instructor can control the student and take corrective action. With the right instructor out on the strut, the likelihood of the "righthand slip" can be almost eliminated. If you have current, competent instructors then IAD can be great. If not then S/L is probably the best bet. (Not to demean S/L but IAD is more instructor intensive) Admitedly, my S/L experience is VERY limited but I have done several thousand IADs I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

If you want real fun, hang by your legs under the step (watch the brake line and don't wear baggy pant legs) or try the imfamous toe hang! Just try not to dent the leading edge I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

I like go through a full inspection atleast once in front of the owner and explain what I'm doing and why. That way if they use another rigger, they can evaluate them and decide if they want them packing thier gear. Some have told me of riggers who "fluff and stuff" in about 20 min. with no inspection at all. Repack is a misnomer! IMO the jumper is paying for an inspection. It's only repacked because you have to unpack it to look at it. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

"Tapered" vs "Semi-Elliptical" vs "Fully-Elliptical" vs "Cross-braced"
teason replied to Elisha's topic in Gear and Rigging
The Firebolt is a true eliptical. I believe it's based on a truncated 3:1 elipse. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -

Bad body position ... sounds like a student. 2 canopies out ... usually a student the other 1% of the reserves rides ... more hazardous with less experience. Sometimes the best choice is not always the best choice, especially with students. A strong opinion is usally the sign of a closed mind and when we choose what to train students on, when we choose what is the best choice, we can't base our choices on hubris. I've been reading this thread with great interest and have noticed that some make those choices by weighing the pros and cons of each. Others just claim to be right and refuse to believe that thier system has a downside. Here are the factors: 1.) landing area 2.) AADs 3.) container system 4.) personal perspective of training techniques 5.) personal views of students under stress and how the react 6.) past experiences (seen some scary &^$&*) 7.) ah .. a bunch more that I can't think of on the wrong side of midnight These are the factors, not wrong thinking because you disagree with others, not cheapness of the DZO and not arrogance that comes from thinking you have to always be right. p.s. I'm still on the fence with my views (having been very pro round for years) and appreciate those who have made good points. What can we do about Skyride?

Where the hell did that come from? I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
Volume is about 440. I had an instructor jump one as a main for shits and giggles. It had the about the same volume as a the Sabre 170 that previously inhabited the rig. If you have gear with a Raven II, a 26' Strong LoPo would be a tight fit and look lumpy but it would still work! There have been test down on pull ability by jumpshack. I believe it can be found in Dan Poynter's "Parachute manual Vol. II. I wish I could quote it but it's sitting at the DZ! Anyone else got one they can quote? I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Washed a javelin oddessy this years. It was red white and grey. The bleeding came mostly from the red stitching, like the "Oddessy" logo embroidered on the side. If you don't believe red stitches bleed, take a look at an older reserve with red bartacks. The clean lines and age show the bleed without question. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
-
Just a word about white and red. With the white so likely to get dirty, red may not be a good colour to put next to it. If you wash a red with red and white, the red may bleed! This will make a red and pink container! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Is Adventure Sports a Skyride shell?
teason replied to diverds's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There used to be (maybe still) a mirage dealer at ASC, the same owners as skyride. It would stand to reason that they would have lots of mirage clip art, not that mirage is in cahoots with skyride. I wish I had thought of the oasis thing though, funny I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
Is Adventure Sports a Skyride shell?
teason replied to diverds's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, I'd say so. No address, vague descriptions of staff and gear, lots of Mirage pictures. I'm kinda insulted that they haven't done "Adventure Skydiving Nebraska". It's like they just don't care about us anymore And to think, I spent some of the best years of my as life as the chief instructor at many of the fake dropzones that never really existed. Skyride owners indited on wire fraud
teason replied to FrankTheTank's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm sorry, are you talking about stealing copywrited materials or overtly deceptive tactics? The theft is indisputable! Please forgive me if I find some small satifaction in the legal problems of someone who stole from me. If I broke into your house and stole your TV, I'm sure you'd be happy if I was arrested. Again, the theft is indisputable. Don't be dilliberatly obtuse. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
You can also secure a finger trap by bringing the line back through itself but it has to go through both lines, the same way a bartack on a fingertrap has to. Side note. Aero-tow tugs (ultralights that tow hanggliders) use super heavy duty spectra. It has been done in manitoba for years without stitched fingertraps. The finger trap has about 12" of line in it and has never slipped. With that being said, I taught one of the tug pilots how to lock the fingertrap (jumpshack stitchless fingertrap method) and now he does it to all his tow lines. He feels that just because it hasn't slipped before doesn't mean it won't! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Two of us took out a pool noodle, we called it a dumbell jump. I got out and hung under the step, my friend sat on the step and I tried to catch the noodle with my legs so that we could release balled up on each end. Took a couple of miles, pool nodles aren't known for stiffness! Landed with the noodle between my legs. Looked like I had a 3 foot dick! Attention Canadian Buyers; UPS Duties
teason replied to teason's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You can broker shipments through by downloading the B3 form on PDF from Canada customs website, although someone once told me that you can only do your own brokerage in Manitoba. (don't know if that's true or not). If you can find out where you can broker stuff in BC, I can help you with the form. http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pbg/cf/b3-3/b3-3-fill-04b.pdf Tim I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
