What can we do about Skyride?
teason replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When a web site is copied, in full (name, logo pictures of the real DZ's owner as well as his name) and only change the number, well I would think that's pretty cut and dry. I used to have a hard time figuring which was my site and which wasn't until we increased the size of the banner. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
What can we do about Skyride?

Oooohhh! I like that! It's nice to see it in writing! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
More of just an observation that many people throw out things like "I don't believe in (insert thing here)" and yet they seldom quantify it with a cogent arguement. It drives me nuts. (by the way, JP I did appreciate the last post) What drives me nuts more is others hear this and repeat it, also having no idea why they have that opinion. I had someone condesendingly ask me why I would jump a Racer. When I asked what was wrong with Racers, He told me they were shit. When I ask why, he told me they were garbage. When I asked him what made them garbage he told me they were old technology. When I told him about speed bags, the ease of packing, teflon cables, type XIII webbing and the pin protection for IADs, the strongest argument he could come up with to prove his position was that no one likes them. Finally after pressing him further, it turned out his rigger doesn't like them. Monkey see, monkey do. It is not enough to believe something, you have to know why you believe it. Right or wrong, Derek has a position that is supported by observation and anecdotal evidence. What is right for him, however, is not right for everyone. I'm sure he'll even tell you that. At least he's not saying he doesn't "believe in Racers" and leaving it at that. p.s. Senior riggers aren't allowed to make safety stoes to my knowledge. That's why posting that you can just make them isn't a valid argument. Most of us can't. I'll try and find where I read that. If someone (manufacturers?)can help me that would be much appreciated. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

There is an old saying "We spend they first half of our life finding truth. We spend the second half defending our version of it. Ever tried to order a replacement safety stoe? It can take months. Oh yeah, they're made of "invincible rubber" that never degrades! The sheathing is likewise invincible! *sniff* what's that smell, is that sarcasm. Must be, I've seen safety stoes that have been left so long it would make Para flight change to elastics. Must be too much hassle to change them. Takes longer to get a safety stoe than a quickloop. I actually had to call someone at jumpshack to go over to RWS and get me a stoe! And don't say you can just make them because there is a whole bunch of senior oput there who can't. I've also seen stoe made 2"+ out of spec. As for lossing your ticket or being sued for a Racer packed to tight, it's called reasonable doubt. We're not talking about leaving a molar strap in a rig! If anyone can tighten a racer, than the rigger cannot be responsible beyond the pullforce recorded the day the rig was pack. If anything, the Racer absolve the rigger of being responsible for the pullforce on the rig. As for JP up there who won't buy a canopy if it's hybrid, I see yor point. I mean F11 is stronger than ZP, It's on the bottom skin wher lift is not an issue, there fore it won't affect the flight and is not subject to wear. It is easier to pack and has a small pack volume, all reasons to hate them. *sniff* there's that smell again. I knew this guy who didn't believe in real things. He told me he didn't belive in seat belts,he didn't believe in big cars and he didn't believe in Docters. One Day his Datsun was slammed by an old Mercury Meteor. He blasted out the front windsheild into the other car. He wound up in the emergency room and started believing in all three real quick. He died cause I don't believe the Doctors could help him. Soo, don't believe in F11 eh? I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

What can we do about Skyride?
teason replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
OK, here's the thing ... *sigh* ... how many times can I post the same points. This is last time! I realize this is a HUGE thread and it's really difficult to read all the posts so I'll try and give the coles notes version. ***Please read*** 1.) Skyride does little advertising beyond flooding the internet with websites. - This means all it is doing is skimming internet traffic that is already active. It does not seek or establish new markets or broaden existing ones, it instead redirects customers looking for skydiving in a particular state, sells them a G.C. and then sends the customer to the real DZ they would have found anyway. 2.) The flooded website advertise DZs that do not exist. - The customer is fooled into thinking they are booking with a real DZ. The fake sites are full of fake staff photo, fake airpower descriptions and fake testimonials. The customer is unaware that the "DZ" they are researching on the net does not exist and they may have to drive to the next state to do their jump. This practice is illegal and gives them an unfair advantage. 3.) The flood of sites have copyrighted material. -My own site www.339jump.com was cut and pasted into sites like this www.tnskydiving.com There are 25-30 sites that are direct copies of my site, code and fonts. In some markets I compete with a fake DZ called Adventure Skydiving that uses my fonts, logo and images. A potetial customer could not tell my site from the fake one. My advertising feeds their business by their illegal actions. 4.) Skyride uses deceptive tatics and bait and switch and hidden charges. - Customers are surprised when they learn they have to pay extra for gear and lift ticket. This allows skyride to undercut the DZ the jumper is sent to; where he pays more than if he just called that DZ to start with. 5.) Skyride is used as market research. -When enough business in an area is redirected through Skyride, Skyride opens up a real DZ in the area. DZs that participate in Skyride's activities are giving them tools to be a potetial threat to their business. If your student business is redirected through Skyride, You may lose that business entirely. I think those are the points made in this thread as I see them. Did I miss anything? *** conclusion*** Their methods are illegal, they do not increase student numbers and they threaten existing Dropzones. If this thread continues getting circular, it may be locked. Can we use this post as a reference? I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
Argghh, you beat me to it! I like to keep a closing loop in my rigging kit for just suchg an occasion. I own 2 Racers, and 10 Javs (ok, 1 racer is a tandem and the javs are student gear) and I'll pack the tandem before I'll pack the jav! I also prefer the reserve pin protection the racer provides when I'm doing IADs. My previous set opened in the plane twice and I once checked it after a load and it was half past the grommet! Scary *&%$# ! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

What can we do about Skyride?

Wow, I just ypes "skydive Hutchinson" in a search engine, and I clicked on the like that said "Skydive Hutchinson". http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?fr=ieas&p=skydive+hutchinson&y=on It's the second one in the sponsered sites. Isn't that false advertising? Isn't that blatantly stealing traffic from Hutchinson? That's gall! looking for racer tandems and student gear
teason replied to skydiverjerry's topic in Gear and Rigging
Skydive Hutchinson has a Racer Tandem for sale. It has about 250-300 jumps, and elite main and I think the Cypress needs an 8 yr. Looked at it last month, it's in beautiful shape. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
I think you've been stung by bad riggers. They're out just like there are bad pilots (I knew one that climbed a 206 at 14 gallons, thought the temp gauges were broken). Bad riggers, like bad pilots, are the exception, not the rule. Yes there are those who would rather "make stuff up" than admit that they don't know something but they represent a minority of riggers. The real unfortunate thing is if you're not a rigger yourself, how can you tell the bad ones? Sorry I'm a bit off topic here

wow!! My Rigger told me I have rubber bands on my reserve bag
teason replied to overmyhead's topic in Gear and Rigging
Actually, I believe it is when the brass begins to oxidize that the rubber will break down. The oxidized brass can get in to the safety stoe, breaking down the rubber. The safety stoe is, however, quite robust and to be honest, I don't think faliure with proper storage and maintainance is likely. As for the Racer, replacing the e-bands at every repack should ensure elastic integrity. To answer a previous question, yes Javlin, like all US manufacturers (Jumpshack Excluded) uses safety stoes made from elastic bungee cord. It has been in use since it was introduced by Para-Flite in the early eighties. It is said to have more retentive force than conventional elastics and is said to be less likely to cause baglock. This is, however, up for debate as proper mil-spec elastics are designed to break to prevent baglock and the safety stoe will not. Safety stoe rubber can also degrade from heat (like the trunk of a car) and from oxidized brass. Because the stoe is sheathed, the degredation may go unnoticed. Ohhh ... this could start some good debate -

teason replied to overmyhead's topic in Gear and Rigging
I see that you have a Racer. If it's new, than it's probably the speed bag and has to use elastics. If it's a mod, then their shoud be two strips of 1" box weave sewn across the pouch where the lines were previously stoed. If the Mod was done correctly, your rigger will be undoing a modification that is recomended by the manufacturer. The next rigger who gets your gear may want to charge you to redo it. You need to ask your rigger if the mod was done correctly. You also might want to call Jumpshack and have them explain the virtues of rubber bands over safety stoes. You can also PM Sid. he works at Jumpshack. P.S. when your rigger tries to explain that elastics melt when they're used on brass grommets, ask him what the inside of the safety stoe made of. What can we do about Skyride?
teason replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've gotta agree, saying that Chuting Star does bad rigging because Skyride does unethical things makes no sense. It's like saying Skyride is totally ethical because ASC is a good DZ. Those seem to be the points coming from both sides here. We can't start critcizing someone's ability and integrity because we don't like who they associate with. If we have something against Skyride, it must be valid, or atleast a little more valid than "so and so is a jerk" Conversely, coming on this forum and saying how great ASC is, is just as pathetic and has nothing to do with Skyride business tactics. Many on this site have legit beefs against Skyride. To slag someone just because they conduct business with Ben and Cary undermines the position. Also, to think that you can go on the ASC forum and shit in thier back yard is rediculous. Do you really think that they're going to entertain negative comments even remotely pertaining to the owners? Of course not. no matter how justified (and trust me, if anyone is justified, I am) Remember, just cause thier heads are deep in the sand, doesn't make them bad people, just blindly adhering to what's situationally pallitable for them. Quite the one sided aurgument going on over there. An ASC lovefest if you will. ASC and it's jumpers have nothing to do with the aurguments against skyride. If the vibes are good, jump your brains out. Now as for Mikes comment about skyride "advertising heavily" That is an equivocation of the truth. Skyride aggressively floods the internet with fake DZ websites. The "participating centres" inturn get the customers that would have found them anyway. Skyride would be justified if they were broadening the reach and scope of advertising mediums already being explored. They nudge out legit sites and sell the DZs thier own customers back to them. They also have not realized any new mediums or markets, they leach of already established client streams, and in ND they leach off of radio, grassroots marketing and reputation we worked hard to acheive. And all they had to do was cut and paste my site and code. It took no effort to reap the benifits of our hard work. THAT is what makes them paracites. ASC may be the greatest DZ on the planet where joy shoots out your ass everytime you jump. That has nothing to do with the fact that skyride is a paracytic entity. Now if any of you who defend ASC(of what I don't know why, they don't even enter in to this) can prove to me that Skyride was justified in stealing my website(and we are talking about pure theft here), I will buy you a brand new set of gear. Safe bet huh? I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -

"Those who hate you can't win unless you hate them. Then you destroy yourself" - Nixon (and he would know) I've gotta laugh. Have you noticed that the ASC site says nothing to defend Skyride or Ben and Cary? All they talk about is how we won't listen to them about ASC. I thought we were discussing Skyride and it's owners here. I don't want to hear about how nice a DZ ASC is, it's not the issue. Well there is an old saying "If you can't pound the facts, pound the table" and there is a lot of noise over there. Force to deploy reserve, Small girl
teason replied to Lostinspace's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In live tests run by Jumpshack on hundreds of live subjects, Female produced 26 to 118 lbs of force with one hand and 58 to 248 lbs with two hands. Even the weakest can easily pull the required 22lbs max pullforce on a reserve pin. -
Terminal Velocity has a typically pathetic early 90s plot but has Charlie Sheen as his womanizing arrogant self. Quite funny. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

I attribute it to F**knuts who like to brag about how small thier canopy is. I never had a problem at my DZ until an asshat with a 1000+ jumps and a Stilletto 135 started making fun of everyone with a bigger canopy. His constant ridicule of larger canopies is what fuels our problem. Last spring he told a 185lbs guy with 60 jumps he should get a 150 or he'll be bored! And then started bragging about how small a caopy he has. Buttwads like that is what makes S&TAs jobs so hard! The adhesive on ripstop tape has been found to breakdown nylon fabric or at least weaken it. I use it only for temp fixes in a pinch. The permanent repair MUST remove all areas the tape came in contact with. As for reserves .... scary! Maybe they phoned a bogus "Adventure Skydiving Center" The net is full of them. They all go to Skyride. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. -
As I posted in a previous thread; To steal from Mark Twain, "teaching a 100 jump wonder about wingloading safety is like teaching a pig to sing. White has it's advantages. It shows UV damage best as well as other stains. It makes inspections a snap if the stitching isn't white aswell. White, however, does not show up acid to well. I think in this day and age of battery powered AADs, I would go with a reserve that will show acid (it's a dull pale). I'm assuming you metioned a canopy that is zero-p to the rep. Also washing is advised but only if what you have on it is more of a hazzard. ie: salt water etc... A canopy that is acid contaminated, for example, should be treated with 50/50 distilled water and ammonia. I'd hope their was more context to that e-mail. A canopy manufacturer making across the board recomendations to wash canopies is disconcerting. Especially PD who have such great concerns over the porosity of their reserves Tim I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
