Love is the same as Mental Illness/Drug Addiction (story)
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
http://www.newsnet5.com/family/4556245/detail.html Crazy In Love? It's In The Brain Brain Scans Of Those In Love Nearly Identical To Those With Mental Illness PHILADELPHIA -- Have you ever been crazy in love? Scientists now say the brain activity of those in a whirlwind romance is nearly identical to those with mental illness, Philadelphia television station WCAU reported. New research with brain scans finds that new love lights up the part of the brain that is also lit up by thirst, hunger and a craving for drugs. "Of course, drug addictions can be very powerful, very compelling kinds of experiences for people and the kinds of experiences that people feel they need to have that kind of thing," said Dr. Andrew Newberg at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. "And if love runs along those same lines, it's really not completely surprising the same brain areas would be involved." That means that new love might be less emotion and more physical addiction. The study's authors call it life's greatest addiction. Once your crazy love has mellowed, many people's brain scans tend to light up in regions involved in long-term attachment. Newberg is a neuroscientist and he researches brain scans. He said he is not surprised first love lights up like an addiction because if we don't fall in love and have babies, our species would die out. "It really makes sense that the feelings we have around love, mating and sex are among the strongest we have as human beings. And showing that on a brain scan is not surprising to me," Newberg said. The study's author, from Rutgers University, said that new love is so addicting that some people actually commit suicide if they get dumped. Drug addicts rarely do that if they don't get their drugs. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Russia warns U.S. about weapons in space

I do Techincal and Professional recruiting and was an IT person in the past. It all depends upon the culture of the company. This is where your research comes in handy. There are some old school interview styles out there where they hard-core tech screen you first then worry about the culture aspect afterwards. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Yes, always have the typical stuff done: Clean suit fresh from the cleaners, haircut, shower, bring two copies of your resume/portfolio, etc. Here is what you really need to know: -research the company, know who they are and why you want to work there. -be ready to answer the hard questions about your resume. as a recruiter if I see that you are trying to hide something on your resume I will go after that first. Therefore, be ready to turn all your negatives into a positive that will benefit the company you are looking to go to. -be confident in your background and your skills. be ready to talk about them and please don't just use adjectives (best, top notch, etc) because we hear that all day long. What you need to do is have your success story ready. What have you done in past jobs that benefited your employer? What acheivements? What problems did you overcome? How did you do that? What was the final result? How much money did you save for them, etc? Past success is a good way to guide future success. In other words, what makes you better than the rest of the candidates interviewing for the position. -be ready to ask them questions - it is a sign of interest in the position. If you really want it, you will have questions. what do you feel is the greatest challange of this position, what is the company philosophy/mission, what is you vision/idea of how this position fits into the company -ask the hard questions: are there any concerns you have about me in this position, how many others have you interviewed, do you feel I would be the right person for this job. You want to ask these while you are still there in person. By addressing their concerns you have a chance to counter them with positives and avoid having them become reasons not to hire you. -close the interview: if you like the people, like the position then ask for the job and ask what the next steps are. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... bah, crappy weekend. Spent all three days in bed, and still home sick today. Nearly took a trip to the ER last night when I had some issues with breathing. Oh well. Best Memorial Day weather I can remember in recent history and I got to watch it from a window. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Nope, I enjoy doing my job and have way too much to do to PW anymore. I don't try to catch up with most of the posts anymore because they are basically the same people saying the same things over and over and over again. When I am dialing out my 100+ daily calls at my desk I often cruise the net, dz.com is one of my stops. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... You need to get a nice 1GB SD card and download some skydiving movies or music to it. Use the headset and no one knows what is going on. Works like a charm for me. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Things You Learn About Computers From the Movies
ChasingBlueSky replied to boinky's topic in The Bonfire
sheesh....that's already happened. Didn't you see the Matrix? Remeber that as soon as any computer gets a working AI it becomes evil and feels the need to kill us. Hmmmm....wonder what that says about Hollywood's interpretation of "intelligence." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Great Space Coaster, TN Tuxedo, Ricochet Rabbit?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
Does anyone else remember these? I made an off hand comment about "No news is good g-news with Garry Gnu" and only one person had heard of it. Same for "bing - bing - bing! Ricochet Rabbit!" Then I felt old when I asked about Tennessee Tuxedo, got the same reaction and was told that most in the office were not born yet when that was on. I got nearly the same for Fractured Fairy Tales and Underdog! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Anyone else on here with Airline Benefits?
ChasingBlueSky replied to Duckwater's topic in The Bonfire
Up until 9/11 I took most of my flights for free. Grew up with a parent at one of the top airlines. After college I flew on buddy passes from the six friends that worked another major airline. Now I am too old for the parent connection and I only have one close friend at an airline and she uses the passes for her b/f. It was great - in all those years I had only one real issue with flying standby (trying to get out of DIA around '92 when that major snowstorm hit the SE) and often I got to board early due to the clout of the name on the buddy pass. Now I have to pay for my tickets like everyone else....but I'm damn good at finding cheap flights. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I'll remember that the next time I'm taken out by a novice skydiver who's distracted while looking at their HUD, and worried cause their beeps are not going off while they are on a load over their skill level but they'll be ok on cause they have a Cypres. Or people that feel they can exceed TSO specs or keep a sloppy container because an ad says their main/reserve will still save their life if deployed head down, or those that feel they can avoid bouncing by looking at their wrist/chest mounted altimieter avery few moments (damn those dependent people), or those that pack a sloppy main because "I have a reserve" or because "it's designed to open no matter what", etc....I know I can come up with a much longer list than this just by sitting on any packing mat or dirt dive area at ANY dz....and I could do it without talking about an AAD, HUD, or audible. Some of the worst offenders would be the oldest, most experienced jumpers out there. How does anyone expect people to be safe about new toys when we abuse the time tested ones? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Who's to prove it's saving lives? I would sugest just as much as it might be saving lives, it's making people more careless, thus creating more opportunities for disaster. Yea, like the three ring setup THere is a big difference. The 3 ring was an improvement on and existing peice of equipment that was needed. It rediced the complexity of the existing systems. It could alsobe argued that with no cuttaway system the system is simpler and reduces the chance of a fatality from an improperly completed or accidental activation. We could jump without parachutes and just avoid that possibility of a malfunction. Things like altimeters, parachutes, aad, velcro, etc are all technology driven, inspired etc etc.....trying to define which one makes you device dependent and doesn't is just an exercise in semantics. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... oops. somehow missed that....but that ties into this my friend found on a forum today: what I want to know is, why didn't Yoda add in after "to his family take him".... "AND NAME HIM LARS! LIKE BAIL IS NAMING LEIA ORGANA! ANYTHING BUT SKYWALKER! You got that Obi-Wan?" I'm just sayin', a kid named Skywalker, living with the Lars' family, on Tatooine? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... In Episode 2.. Anakin went back to find his mother who had been freed by CLIEGG LARS ..and then he married her. He is the father of OWEN LARS, and BERU WHITESUN is his girlfriend in episode 2. So Lars is his step brother. In Attack of the Clones Anakins mother had been taken prisoner by a hunting party of Tusken Raiders . In Episode 3.. ObiWan leave baby Luke with Owen and Beru. For years Owen was listed as the brother of ObiWan (books, RPG books, games, etc). Then when Ep2 came out people were pissed that Lucas had changed it. The continuity factor here? Obi Wan never met Owen and Beru, Padme and Anakin did. Would he have gotten the idea from 3PO? R2? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

To sum it up in a few non-spoiling words: "Come join the dark side, Anakin. It's really good." "Well, if you say so..." "Shed your 14+ years of Jedi training and go kill everyone you've ever cared about. That's what you've really always wanted to do." "OK. I suppose I could give it a try..." Went and saw it opening night with a bunch of jumpers. We all really thought it was good. On the way home the above was the main problem I had with the movie. Why? Because the acting from Anakin was terrible and dry. The entire climax of the first three movies and the tragedy of all six are dependent on this very moment. While it was nicely shot, and paired up with the scene in Jedi where Luke is being shot with lightning (but the "kill him" attitude of Mace Windu didn't seem to fit).....it wasn't believable. This should have really torn at the heart - to know that he loved her so much that he went to the dark side to save her. It wasn't so much a betrayal of his friends at first, but stronger loyalty to his wife. Then to have his wife turn him away because of it? The idea is classic tragedy stolen from nearly a dozen stories, but Lucas failed once again to bring out any acting from Padme and Anakin. At least Obi-Wan was able to help with the dramatic aspect of it with some decent acting. Also, I feel the Ep 1 battle with Darth Maul is still the best fight in all 6 movies. Too bad he never did anything with Maul (Red-Shirt bad guy), and didn't bring more of duel of the fates music into part 3....a good fusion of the traditional star wars music with the love song and this would have helped bridge the music between the two trilogies. (on a geeky side note, this is very similar to what Luke did in the Dark Empire comic books - go to the Dark Side....but he did it to get close to the reborn Emperor so he could kill him for good) There were plenty of good SW geek moments to be happy about in the movie - 3P0 orders at the end (interesting to know it wasn't R2 - now go back and watch Obi Wan interact with him in Ep 4 with that in mind), the Tantive IV blockade runner that we see Leia on years later, a young Chewy (guess we now know why the Emperor hated Wookies so much), seeing a Z95 Headhunter in action, Yoda's fight and the Emperor running from him (I still don't get why he ran away), Darth Plageous the Wise and talk of creating life via a vergence in the force(and knowing that all 6 movies were the result of strong plotting of Palpatine), Grevious wheezing from what Windu did to him in the cartoon (I still love the rumors that came out during pre-production that Grevious was actually the remnent so Darth Maul and thus showed a trend of Palpatine trying to save his apprentices), Luke meeting Yoda at a young age which connects to the "there is something familiar" comment on Dagobah, the look of Grevious' throne room looking a lot like the room in Ep 6, and finally seeing that last battle which ties is so much of what ObiWan said in Ep 4. Yup, I'm a geek, so what? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Losing a friend is never easy. Even if they move away you feel loss. Never being able to pick up the phone and call them again.....well, no one has a good answer on how to get past that. Everyone heals and moves on at their own pace. I've found that the amount of pain from the loss is directly connected to how strong a friendship it was. The sad part is, you are never quite the same in the end, even when you do heal. There will always be that little part of your life that is missing. But...will you let the end of the journey with them dominate your feelings/thoughts of them? You had a great friend, and have good memories of him. The good of the journey should outweigh the impact of the loss....eventually...once you get past the initial pain. Also, do you think Chris would want you hurting because of him? How would he best want you to remember him and honor him? Hang in there Kristi....it gets better eventually. I promise. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

There are free programs on the net that allow my laptop to find any/all locked networks in an area. What SSID, MAC filtering and encryption does it keep the average user from using your network while wardriving. That's it. They could sit there, sniff your transmissions and find a way in, but why? That takes time and there is always an other open network on the next block (no joke). Anyone that wants to do damage or use WiFi to their advantage will have no problems getting past any of the above mentioned 'security' methods. This is why WiFi is still not a viable mission critical protocol. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
