Whatever ... believe what you want ... truth ... who's truth is that? ... yours and your religion? Exactly. I don't want to hijack my own thread - but there is a religion out there that is being interpreted that anything Western is evil, and that their god will reward them for killing themselves in the name of him. We have a few thousand New Yorkers dead because someone believes this truth was handed down from upon high. This isn't a truth Sinker - this is only an interpretation of text thought to have come from a higher source. Very subjective. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Sinker, I agree - condoms are not foolproof, nor are they 100%. They break, and there is an undocumented chance that infection may still occur. Much like in skydiving, you can stack the deck in your favor and still die. No argument there. However, the Church is now extending its reach to prevent condoms from being handed out. And they are almost claiming that AIDS/HIV is a homosexual only problem (yet another uneducated view, one that makes me ill). If a condom works 8/10 times, which is below the stats that Trojan publishes, that is better than 0/10 times. If free condoms are not available, I promise the AIDS problem will increase. Look at the stats for AIDS in Africa. Esp take a look at South Africa - the nation hit the hardest with the infection. By 2010 there is a chance to have half the population of that country infected. Are condoms the cure? Nope. Could they help. Yes. But not if the Catholic Church and its morals have anything to say about it. It seems they prefer dead parishoners over those that use condoms. This stance is a step backwards in time. This is not an issue of faith, but an issue of reality. I was born a Catholic, I confirmed my belief and even studied to be a priest for eight years. However, once inside the organization, I saw it for what it was - a political, old-school, boys club with some very flawed and now dangerous practices. I haven't been a practicing catholic or theologian in some time out of disgust. This article has only helped with that. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Saw it a couple weeks ago - great flick. Nice to see Dave Brown, Rook, and Mike Swanson in IMAX glory over Florida! (Dave does some serious geeking!). Forgot it was showing there - was in line for the Raging Bull when I hear my name called out and another skydiver was there and told me about it (yea, it was a rainy day). As said, that final scene just wouldn't work as well on the small screen. Still, I would buy it on DVD! Edit to add: I'm surprised CrazyIvan hasn't posted the links to the past threads on this movie. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Looking further - it appears the Church came out with this back in April of this year: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/04/01/1048962756432.html _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Wow. I can't believe the Catholic Church has gone so low as to say this. This goes right up there with Nelson Mandela saying HIV doesn't cause AIDS. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031009/ts_nm/religion_condoms_dc_1 Catholic Churches Say Condoms Don't Stop AIDS - BBC 2 hours, 44 minutes ago LONDON (Reuters) - The lives of Roman Catholics in some of the countries worst hit by HIV (news - web sites)/AIDS (news - web sites) are being put at even greater risk by advice from their churches that the use of condoms does not prevent transmission of the disease, according to a British television program. If condoms cannot be absolutely guaranteed to block sperm, they stand even less chance of stopping the much smaller virus, the churches' argument runs. The Roman Catholic church opposes any form of artificial contraception -- particularly condoms, which it says promote promiscuity. But the traditional opposition is now being reinforced by arguments over their efficacy. "The moral argument against the use of condoms is being superseded by a clinical argument which is flawed," said Steve Bradshaw, reporter on the BBC Panorama program "Sex and the Holy City" that will be aired in Britain on Sunday night. "The Aids virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon," Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Vatican (news - web sites)'s Pontifical Council for the Family, told the program. "The spermatozoon can easily pass through the 'net' that is formed by the condom." He said that just as health authorities warned about dangers like tobacco, so they had an obligation to issue similar warnings about condoms. The Archbishop of Nairobi, Raphael Ndingi Nzeki told the program: "AIDS...has grown so fast because of the availability of condoms." While in Luak near Lake Victoria, Gordon Wambi, director of an AIDS testing center, said he had been prevented from distributing condoms because of church opposition. Bradshaw told Reuters the program team did not go out looking for the story, but stumbled across it during research. "We heard the same line so many times from different people in different places that we decided to approach the Vatican," he said. The World Health Organization (news - web sites), guardian watchdog of global wellbeing, rejected the Vatican view. "These incorrect statements about condoms and HIV are dangerous when we are facing a global pandemic which has already killed more than 20 million people, and currently affects at least 42 million," the WHO told the program. It conceded condoms could break or be damaged and permit passage of semen, but said they reduced the risk of infection by 90 percent and were certainly secure enough to prevent passage of the virus if not torn. Panorama said scientific research had found intact condoms were impermeable to particles as small as sexually transmitted infection pathogens -- a view rejected by Trujillo. "They are wrong about that...this is an easily recognizable fact," he told the program. From Nicaragua to Kenya and the Philippines, the Panorama team found the same tale from the Catholic church -- that condoms can kill. No official comment from the Vatican was immediately available on Thursday. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... You do recall correct John, neither one was pushing the edge with their flying. I guess maybe Blacklist is the wrong word to use - just add the gear seller to the incident checklist and allow them their input as well. Once again - I'm not for a new BSR, but I am for some sort of change - if only in perceptions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... And that is why I like that little team that choked on the South Side. Baseball fans go there, not yuppies. Plus you can afford to take your kids there and introduce them to the sport...not a bar. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Or stuck with not kissing someone that wasn't your boyfriend. IF you guys had an open relationship this wouldn't be an issue. But as it seems - it wasn't. Your actions are your actions, tell the truth, and face the consequences. Learn from this and don't let it happen again. If you did lie to him, you would have started to doubt his trust because of your own lies. That would have ended the relationship eventually.... Would I do the same as him? Yup. Has this happened to me in the past? Yup, and I took her back, only to have her do it again. First time shame on her, second time shame on me. I won't make that same mistake again. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

My loyalty has always been with the White Sox since 1982 when I went to Comiskey Park for the first time (they played Detroit that day, that was the team Lemon was on). If I started cheering for the Cubs with the rest of the bandwagon/fairweather fans, then I would be a trader. I hold and keep my allegiances. Therefore, I cheer for two teams - the White Sox, and Whoever Plays The Cubs. SOUTH SIDE! (plus you don't get asked to pay $60 to park in the area). Oh yea, I'm a baseball fan. The Cubs are mostly a yuppie trend and Wrigley Field is just another bar to most people in that area. That mindset just annoys me as a sports fan and former sports caster. Still, the Marlins are a wild card team, and the odds are against them because of that. The Cubs have one of the better pitching staffs of the four teams left....they could easily go pitcher for pitcher against the Yankees...and a competition of the cursed teams (Cubs v BoSox) would be an amazing thing to watch. As a Sox fan, I'm worried the Cubs actually have a chance, therefore I'm cheering for the Marlins A LOT! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... OK, think about this. I am saying I DON'T want a BSR, just like you. I want to make my own decisions as well. We are in agreement, ok? HOWEVER, this is going to bring legislation and lawsuits upon us. Why? Because selfish people are saying, "Ok, I don't care about your 30 years of experience, I can jump a Velocity at 100 jumps" and then kill themself in a way that will attract the media, the local DA, etc.... Catch 22 huh? The waiver only protects the DZ, not the sport. Wake up and realize that something needs to change. YOU can help with this by smacking the senseless newbie upside the head or by leading with a good example. Which way do you think will be more effective? Don't forget - not everyone comes from a DZ that has this sort of guidance. Think of how many DZs are putting up planes that will kill the jumpers before they get a chance to kill themself? You think that a DZ like this is going to care if someone hooks it in? I know of at least two DZOs that have said "eh, nothing I can do about it anyway, so I will just let them jump." Reminds me of your stance. This attitude will lead to that dropzone getting shut down, and be an example on why skydiving needs to be banned or further regulated. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... OK, good to see you have life figured out by 14. Your parents were rock stars. I'll give them a silver star for exposing you to the horrors of the world. Now, can we get back to the real issue? that is the REAL issue. Far to many people think death and injury is something that doesnt, cant, wont happen to them, well guess what? They are wrong and once they recognize that fact and accept its consequences then they can begin to decide what risks are acceptable for THEM. Instead we get threads like this, and cry to the skies because "life shouldnt be like this..." and "we have to do something to stop these people from hurting themselves..." No. What you have to do is accept that beyond the age of 18 YOU are the only one responsible for deciding what risks YOU take, you can learn, listen and observe everything and do your best to stay alive and enjoy YOUR passions as long as possible or you can continue blissfully along thinking nothing will touch you and yours until the day your illusions are torn away... far to many people have been weened with exactly those illusions as a safety blanket and cant seem to cope very well when people (and people they care about) die in the real world, and so scream, kick their heels and cry about how life should be endlessly regulated to prevent their personal pain... Dude, at 18 most teenagers will whine that life sucks and they know better than others. Yet they go on and make the same mistakes that others could have learned from before hand. Then, if they do survive life, they get older and say "If I only knew then what I know now" or "Damn, I guess my parents really did know what they were talking about." Honestly, I learned early in life the pain of what death could bring into your life - not everyone does. I met a 30 year old person at work this week that has never experienced death (not even a grandparent) or been unemployed. She came from a single parent home and busted her ass to do good in life and her jobs. Not everyone has life figured out between 14 and 18. Hell, I'm 30 now and just starting to realize how much I still have to learn about life and I'm listening more to what others have to say, and see if I can learn from them and their past mistakes. Good to see you know better than eveveryone else and don't need to have any guidance. Here, take these scissors and run. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I have not advocated one way or the other as far as the proposed WL BSRs. I am saying however, that we as a community can educate our less experienced jumpers. and encourage them to take their time when downsizing their canopy. I understand about your six friends Kallend. I've lost an additonal 3 within the last year. I do not know what the answer is, but I am going to keep listening.
