=Great article - probably some of the best positive press I have seen on the sport - you can tell the reporter takes his job seriously and cares about reporting. Both you and your Mom have a great perspective on the sport that doesn't seem "extreme" but a bit more logical that others will be able to understand. Wish my own parents were as understanding. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Thursday night here in Chicago it is 25F, real feel of 11F. That is a heat wave compared to last week....and from what is happening in the Northeast right now. I can handle it - next winter I will be living in Tampa and bitching about how cold 58F is with the rest of them. I heard the wind chill at Mt Washington was -105F last night. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... U.S. Pilot Fined for Gesture in Brazil http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=589&ncid=721&e=8&u=/ap/20040115/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/brazil_us_fingerprinting By STAN LEHMAN, Associated Press Writer SAO PAULO, Brazil - An American Airlines pilot was fined nearly $13,000 Wednesday on accusations he made an obscene gesture when being photographed at the airport as part of entry requirements for U.S. citizens, officials said. Brazil imposed the new rules that Americans be fingerprinted and photographed at entry points in response the similar rules in the United States for citizens of Brazil and other countries whose citizens need visas to enter. The pilot, Dale Robin Hersh, lifted his middle finger while undergoing the new security process at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport, said federal prosecutor Matheus Baraldi Magnani. Police accused the Miami-based pilot of showing contempt to authorities, a crime in Brazil, and escorted him to a nearby federal courthouse for possible formal charges. However, Hersh agreed to pay a fine before he leaves Brazil in exchange for no charges being filed, the prosecutor said. "Since this was a minor crime I proposed that he be fined 36,000 reals ($12,750), which will later be donated to a home for the elderly," Magnani told reporters. Hersh was freed on his own recognizance. The prosecutor said Hersh expected to pay the fine on Thursday. It wasn't immediately clear where Hersh was staying Wednesday night. The prosecutor said Hersh could have faced charges punishable by up to two years in jail. Hersh's 10-member crew was detained inside the airport when the incident began Wednesday morning and was not allowed to enter Brazil. Police said the crew was not charged with anything and was returning to the United States on an evening flight. American Airlines spokeswoman Martha Pantin said the incident was the result of a misunderstanding. "The company apologizes to the Brazilian (news - web sites) government, the airport authorities, the police or anyone else who may have perceived anything they believe to have been disrespectful," Pantin said. Late Wednesday, when asked if the airline was paying the fine, Patin said: "We are taking care of any Brazilian government levies at this time." The incident is the latest flap in growing diplomatic spat between Brazil and the United States. The Brazilian requirement was first imposed at the order of the federal judge but on Monday it became the government's official policy, citing the diplomatic concept of "reciprocity." On Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked President Bush (news - web sites) to drop the visa requirement for Brazilians entering the United States, while Brazil's Foreign Ministry said the requirement could lead to a souring between the two nations. "Recent episodes, such as the new system of identification of travelers, create a negative climate in public opinion with inevitable political implications, which is not in the interest of the two countries," the ministry said. But in Rio de Janeiro, tourism officials are trying to console American tourists arriving at the airport by treating them to samba music and dancers and giving them flowers, jewelry and T-shirts. Brazil currently requires Americans to have visas to enter Brazil because of reciprocity. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Presidential Announcement on NASA TV 15:15 Eastern
ChasingBlueSky replied to quade's topic in The Bonfire
The guy is a dope lost in space....and seems he only does what he father did. Invade Iraq, try to plan a trip to Mars (luckily that one got shut down). Now - wonder how all those folk at NASA feel that they will need to shut down programs to follow a plan that is purely political. Ever notice that GW smiles at the end of every sentenace - almost as if he is proud of himself that he got the words out. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The 3rd parachute container, covers the standard main parachute container. If you deploy the standard main pilot chute, the result is the a pilot chute in tow. The way to get rid of it is to say 'Oh Bugger" then deploy the test main resulting in a 2 out situation. From this point you can cutaway and pull the reserve normally. . Yup - that's it, I remember now. Thanks! Don't suppose you remember who made that rig for them? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

The Golden Knights have the same sort of demo that I witnessed at Rantoul. They pack/sew the first canopy to streamer upon deployment, the GK chops it, and flails for a few seconds before they deploy the second main. I talked to one of them - it is a special designed rig with three mains on the back, with a very complicated deployment system. No matter what, they have to deploy the mal'd main first, chop, the the 2nd main. If they deploy the middle/2nd main first, it will mal (I forget the reason why). The GK I talked to told me he did that on accident a few times during training and had to chop that and go to the reserve. The reserve can be deployed at any given time, and in any order. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Wonder if they hit a snag....at Rantoul they mentioned they were just finishing up the 135 and almost done with the 150. I don't mind they are taking their time, but wonder if this means the 135 and 150 will fly differntly than the smaller sizes. Much like the Stiletto - the 170 and 190 do not fly like a 150 (don't know about anything smaller than that). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... wonder why they choose to hold off on releasing the 135 and 150 for now. I was told at Rantoul there would be a Katana that large. Guess Big Air will be my next purchase when I downsize this year. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Mine are the same way, plus it they help cause OSA (apnea) and snoring. As soon as I can find a time to do it, mine are going away. To think of no more sore throats! I can get one every month if I am not careful. That painful huh? I'm not looking forward to that. I'm a wimp when it comes to doctors and surgery. How soon can you go back to work? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Funeral for a Friend (Team Funnel Member)
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
Posting this here for anyone that used to jump here and has moved on from Skydive Chicago and for Team Funnel Members not in the area. We were notified of some very sad news today. Jeremy Stockley (TF#9) lost his battle to cancer around 5am this morning. (Jeremy was only in his mid 20's). While he was only at the DZ a few times in the last two years (including a remission period at the Winter Expo where it looked like he was only a short time away from making another skydive), he was a founding member of Team Funnel and a part of the family. His desire to skydive again was always a positive force in his life, and wanted to get healthy so he could return to school and be in the air again. This is part of a message his family sent us today: His last Team Funnel jump (that we know of) was in April of 2002. Once again, thanks for making his time here enjoyable and pleasent. We ask that his name and number remain in Team Funnel and Skydive Chicago history as I am sure he would've prefered this. His memorial information is listed below, if you can't make it, please send a note and make a skydive for him this weekend. Blue skies His visitation will be held on Saturday (January 17, 2004) from 9:30 until 11:00am. The funeral service will begin promply at 11:00am following the visitation which will both be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church of Earlville, Illinois (60518). Burial will immediately follow the service. Please pass this forward to all members. Once again, thank you. Also, the mailing address that cards, etc... can be directed is The Stockley's 210 North Street PO Box 185 Earlville, IL 60518 _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... If you do a search on Google you will find plenty of information on Univ Of Phoenix. Private-post secondary education is a growing market, and most are public owned companies. Others in this field would be DeVry and AIU online. Some of them are accredited, (I know AIU online is, and DeVry is now a University). These schools will ALWAYS be more expensive than a public community college or university since they get government/state backing....and most strive to be the most expensive in their market to help increase the perceived value of the school. When you are asking about an opinion of one of these schools, you have to realize there is often a huge differance in quality between some of the locations...I know I have seen that at my company. There is still a stigma in most people's minds that they "need" to go to a traditional college/university to be marketable. What you need to concentrate on is your major and what you will do with it upon graduation. Often these private schools get their grads out into the field quicker with more marketable skills than say someone that spent 5 years studying Humanities and now has no carrer path. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Because it was going to be the upgrade to the botched v3, and they trashed that entire project after MAJOR issues. Good idea gone bad, I never had the courage to install v3 _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Ok, this one has me scratching my head. I have WMPv9 on my PC at work, and just recently installed WinAmp5. Audio on WinAmp and WMP is now playing in double time, making even deep voices sound like hyper chipmunks. I have the same setup at home (Except for the OS - 2000Pro at work, XP Pro at home). Any ideas? I've quickly went thru the WinAmp menus and didn't see anything about speed or pitch of audio, or on WMP. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The Crossfire1 & 2, cobalt and stiletto are very easy to harness steer at 1.1 when they are in the small range of under 120 sq ft. Crossfire2 was the most harness responcive of the bunch at that wingloading. Ok, I wouldn't know about that size of canopy since 150 is the smallest I have ever jumped. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I found I couldn't relax like many other students and spun out of control shortly after I was let go on level 3....I even kicked my JM in the face, breaking his face mask. He did tag back on me, tried to get me to relax, but I realized it was 5500, so I pulled. I had to repeat that level. Once I was exiting on my own, I spun out of control on a later level (#9) because I tensed up again - the spin started right at 6G and it was the worst spin I had yet....everything I did made it worse, so I just pulled....I completed a full rotation from the time I let the PC go, and spun to a head low attitude. It took me a few weeks to recover from the whiplash of that opening. Relax, don't beat yourself up - it happens to the best of us. Now, go back and talk to your JM on ways to fix this. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Why haven't GWB supporters made a big stink about this yet?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
This forum is an international community, would you consider anti-GWB the same on here? The way news travels these days, and the fact she expressed herself in front of thousands of people - how could that be considerd "going behind our backs." I'm sure there was at least one American at that concert. Also, this is a war that was/is still one of the top stories on any global news station - she was just addressing the current events, and letting a foreign audience know that not all Americans support or believe in their President (even the popular vote in the election showed that). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
