  1. Thread One Freefly in XGames ESPN voting page for freeflying 96 ESPN Pro Tour of Freefly and Skysurfing There are plenty of other threads if you look...I can't find the ones where they switched it from "Add Freeflying, to Either freeflying or skysurfing" _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. I thought they were jumping out of Oceanside,CA and were landing next to the Oceanside Pier overlooking the ocean. Looked pretty scenic if you ask me! Lots of spectators can watch from the pier. I don't know the name of the town - I just remember Rook (Keith's video guy) telling us about it when he got home. He was back in Chicago before the Skysurf section ever aired. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. ESPN was having issues with skydiving the last couple years it ran it. Production cost was an issue for one, the other was that they could not have it at the same location or even the same time as the rest of the X-Games. The last one in CA used the Monterey Super Otter but had them landing in a vineyard with almost no spectators (bad on camera). Since ESPN didn't want to risk technical problems, they had the competition happen early, then had the announcers do play by play against a video tape. Keith Snyder was in that one - so if you know him, just ask him about it. After that, there was a push to get FreeFlying on the X-Games, I believe the Flyboyz were one of the biggest supporters of it. ESPN wanted to know if there was any support for it and put out feelers.....then turned the tables on everyone and said they had to choose "Either SkySurfing or FreeFlying" and with all the complaints that generated, they just pulled the plug on skydiving. They decided they had a better spectator sport to add to the games and went that route. I haven't watched the X-Games since. As Indyz, Phree and the rest said on costs and accessibility were major factors in this. If you do a search on rec.skydiving you will find plenty of talk about it. There were articles in Skydiving and Parachutist as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. Congrats! Well, you could always get your MCSA as well as your MCDBA. Good luck with 229 - it has one of the highest failure rates of any of the MS tests.....but don't forget it is the one test that is required for many of their certs. I think that 216 is second on the failure rate - just make sure you can create a network scheme easily! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 5. Like everyone else, I am sick of this story...but found this quote funny: "There's Janet, gyrating her hips, puckering her lips, lasciviously zigging her way through late-'80s dance moves. And, wait, now put it in slow-motion, there's Justin creeping his left hand up Janet's torso and yanking on her bustier with the zeal of a skydiver pulling a ripcord." 6. Found this one in the news today: http://www.readthehook.com/stories/2004/02/05/strangeButTrueHeavyManNoth.html Q. In a race to the bottom, could a downhill skier get up more speed than a skydiver? J. Hingeley A. Depends on the skier and the diver. Top skiers average over 60 mi/hour on a downhill run, peaking at near 90 mi/hour (145 km/hr), says Peter J. Brancazio in Sport Science: Physical Laws and Optimum Performance. That's mighty fast, a victory of right clothing, well-engineered equipment and proper stance to minimize aerodynamic drag like a cyclist or jockey. Here's where the skier's "egg position" comes in-- tested in wind tunnels long ago-- a deep, compact crouch with thighs and upper body parallel to the ground, elbows tucked inside the knees, hands near the chin. But in skydiving, the participant tries at times to increase air resistance. After jumping, the diver falls faster and faster for several thousand feet until reaching terminal velocity-- at 100 to 200 mph (160-320 km/hr) or even higher, says Brancazio. A head-first "nose dive" minimizes frontal area and drag; to slow, the skydiver adopts a horizontal spread-eagle posture, arms and legs extended. Yet even the dallying skydiver at around 100 mph probably beats the downhill skier but not the speed skier, equipped with special streamlined helmet on an ultrasteep course at high altitudes to further reduce air resistance. Tucked into position and presenting barely half the air resistance area of someone standing, the speed-skier has been known to top 155 mph, beating the elusive 250 km/hr mark and outpacing many skydivers, but not those in a hurry. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 7. They forced the entire office to come in at 8am this morning and told us our meetings would start at 8:00 sharp! Well, now we are all sitting around doing nothing for the next 45 minutes or so (plus we didn't have the meeting)....I can't call anyone this early, and our open-house doesn't begin until 9:30a. Add to that the heavy snow fall and I doubt anyone will be here today. Anyone else stuck at work yet? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  8. As told by HardOcp Posted by Steve 5:12 PM (CST) Apple To PC Mod Snafu: Overclockers posted an Apple G5 to PC(http://www.overclockers.com/tips1133/) mod the other day that apparently showed someone gutting a brand new dual processor G5, giving away the internals, then replacing everything with a lame Micro-ATX Athlon based board that didn’t even sport an AGP slot. Tons of people responded only to find out the whole thing ended up as a prank on Overclockers and the story really didn’t happen like the author said it did. Ed has updated the article to let readers know what happened: Are the pictures real? Yes. Is it my own G5 case that has been cut and hacked? Yes. Did I give away two G5 2GHz processors (IBM PC 970)? No! So what happened? I got a free G5 shell from a buddy of mine and pulled a prank on a Mac loving friend. He got so upset. I wrote up a little story, my imagination and warped sense of humor kicked in. I sent it to OC.com just to see the reaction. I honestly didn't think it was going to be posted. Obviously, if you were going to do a mod like this, you would expect the new PC components to meet or exceed that of the existing Apple hardware. Or go to the other extreme and make a fishbowl out of the G5 or something like that. We happen to like Apple to PC conversions, but we like them when they are done correctly. Our very own Rotten Apple project (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzUx) took a G4 case and filled it with the “best of the best” PC components available at the time and color matched the whole project in [H]ardOCP red. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. Swoop cords over gloves no matter what - I have needed to ditch mine too many times, and I would have had some serious issues if I was unable to remove them. I've had the cord inside the suit slip knot itself from climbout to launch and attach to my shirt just around my elbow limiting my reach, I had additional guide rings installed after the cord inside my suit snag on something and wouldn't budge...during a spinning line twist I was somehow limited on my reach (I can steer my risers and fire my brakes with them on) until I removed them. I have had the loop catch on the floater bar a couple times and each time either the cord or the loop broke...I have had people dock on me hard enough to snap the cord as well. Your jumpsuit will fly funky if one cord can stay tight when the other one is broken. Do not slip know the loop over your hand. Don't forget you will have an increased burble in a drag suit that has cords. I've had a few hesitations because I wasn't mindful of my deployments. You wan't to have both slow and fast range - the cords should only go tight when you push your elbows out or arms out wide. I found in the tunnel that I can keep my swoops on using mantis and just adjust the position of my elbows to get them tight or keep them slack. If you can walk to the plane, and sit in the plane with the cords on without them being tight and restrciting your movement. Make sure you can reach your risers/toggles with them on, or can ditch them fast enough to deal with a problem. It will take a couple jumps to get it right - but always side on the side of too loose as you are adjusting them. Wait until you get to use them in a track! Arms out a bit to keep them tight and give you a bit of wing really gives you some lift! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. I am speaking from the reality of the business world. Remember how one or two companies made a ton of money on the internet years a go?? What happened next? EVERYONE had an dot.com site trying to make money and thined the crowd - demand went away and we had the dot.com crash. Supply/Demand, feasability and cost (heard it costs $200,000 a year in electricity to run the one in Orlando). How many people travel to Orlando and Perris for tunnel camps and trips over the winter for coaching? If we have a tunnel at every major DZ, do you think it would effect the bottom line of the tunnel in Orlando? Do you think those in Eloy that travel to Perris for tunnel will do so next year when they get theirs? Does Eloy have that many tourists to help offset the cost in the summer when there are not as many jumpers there? Are there enough good teams and coaches to run camps in all of those locations? Not negative, just being realistic. Remember - I am bringing this up for selfish reasons - I don't want the tunnels to go away! I love them, and worry that if they get spread thin I won't have a place to play. I'd rather travel then not have one. Now, one to supplement the overflow at Bragg sounds like a smart move. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. As much as the military is seeking outside resources such as AFF training so that guys can challenge the HALO course I can also see military units using this tunnel. The one at Bragg can be booked for months on end sometimes. Also the short/no notice ability to take ones A team to the tunnel without having to plan it months out is definately gonna be an attraction. Throw in the civillian/foreign teams that come to NC to train with the Knights or by themselves and the average skydiver and I think it will run pretty much year round easily. But have you noticed the HUGE cost differance between what a whuffo pays for 2 minutes and what a skydiver pays? It may run a lot, but it won't be as profitable. Also, it may not be able to run 24/7 if the neighbors complain about the noise. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. Earlier this year I sent an email to the NSL proposing both a Freefly and Swooping circuit - I volunteered my time and energy to help organize it in the Chicago area. No one from the NSL got back to me. Oh yea, we have "Swoop Club" at Skydive Chicago - an event where we welcome all levels of canopy pilots to fly a course with blades. It happens first thing in the morning and is usually done before most jumpers make it to the hanger, and it happened early enough that other DZ jumpers came out to it, then went back to their DZ for a full day of jumping. The idea is much like scrambles - newbies learning from the pros. Plus it helps the DZ realize who are the ones that are trying to get to the hotshot level and can keep an eye on them and work with them. Regulation is NOT the way to go - no one will follow it. It just won't work - I'm surprised that those that have been in the sport the longest are the ones suggesting this. I realize the frustration level of watching people get hurt year after year....but you can't save all of them. Want to know the best way? Get the "cool" swoopers involved in a very education vocal campaign - something that is altruistic and isn't an advertisment for their coaching program. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 17. Isn't the tunnel at Bragg a re-circulated one? Does anyone else feel they are building too many tunnels? I just don't want any shutting down for my own selfish reasons. SD Az is now advertising theirs, Perris has one, Orlando has one, we have the one in Vegas, the one in Tenn...the one in NJ has the greenlight as well once that "extreme park" gets up and going. Is there really a market for all of those tunnels? The one in Orlando is in the most amazing spot - people get off at the same exit to go to Universal Studios and International Drive (tourist trap) is right there! Is it really financially feasable to open a windtunnel in a location that will try to stay open just from jumpers? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 18. I believe it was someone at PD or someone at RW that sent an article to Parachutist a while back talking about the abundance of sponsorships and why they were cutting back....you have to prove your worth as why they should sponsor you now (smart move). Once you are sponsored, that company will be keeping an eye out for you and how much free press you can drum up for them. The only fully sponsored people I have ever met are the biggest names in this sport - they get around and draw attention to themselves. Alchemy, Airspeed, PD Factory Team, FlyBoyz, Team Extreme, Anonmoly, others on the PST, etc.... Everyone else that is "sponsored" gets a discount off their gear...some are allowed to sell gear and can take a cut on the profit. Those that work for a DZ are usually offered a decent cut as well. Wait around long enough and you can find a sale that will give you as much off as some of those partially sponsored teams. So what is the big deal? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  19. I believe there are some off the coast of China and Japan as well. In fact, they are building another "floating" airport that is killing off some of them. Saw it on tv, so it must be true. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  21. I believe I saw a poll on MSNBC about this - 51% of the people could care less - 8% were offended. Just because the media latched onto a story and given it more press than the Democratic race (why was Pat O'Brien on the Today show talking about a boob?) doesn't mean the rest of America is as concerned as them. This made good headlines, not good news...and now the feds need to react because of the amount of press they are giving it. Anyone else see the story from the White House that GWB missed it since he fell asleep during half time. Guess they have tried every avenue with this story - hoping it will die now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. Don't forget that pilot skill needs to be factored into this as well. Just because you own a Dodge Viper doesn't mean someone in a Vette can't beat you in a race.
