  1. See, what Grumpy isn't telling you is that this was the cheapest way for him to pay off all his beer debts. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  2. oh yea? Go Blackhawks....er, oooops. Sorry. Well, they will kick your ass next year! Now the real hockey season starts. 3. I always do better going right to the website of the airline, joining their rewards club and booking thru them. Expedia, et all include a service fee to book the tickets for UAL, AA, etc. I have a friend that is a manager in marketing for one of the major airlines - she mentioned that you would do better 9/10 times on the airline homepage. In fact, they often offer better deals, cheaper prices and higher rewards that way. Always check the discount airliners: www.flyted.com, www.flysong.com, www.spiritair.com,www.airtran.com, www.frontierairlines.com, www.flyseal.com, www.usa3000.com, wwwjetblue.com, www.southwest.com, www.ata.com (thats all that I could remember off the top of my head) Also, look at the airport you will be leaving from and arriving at - check to see all the airlines that work at both ends....you can usually find this on the airports website...then check the airlines webpages. btw, don't forget www.travelzoo.com for vacation packages, www.hotwire.com, www.cheaptickets.com, yahoo travel....if I remember any others (I subscribe to about 30 of them) I will post them later. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. I'm not sure I understand that. Guys don't donate to charity??? Or is it they won't donate to breast cancer research? I've witnessed countless fundraisers run by skydivers that have generated plenty of cash, and I have personally been involved in two for Make-A-Wish that has met its goal two years in a row, and we are doing it again this year. We have several JFTC ladies at SDC, and there has been plenty of donations from the guys to help them out. They just went around and asked - we donated (and some jello shots were sold on anothe occasion). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 5. You realize that is a rule that is subject to personal interpretation? Yup, look it up. First off, the FCC needs someone to complain about it. Then they need proof of it. The more complaints about a certain on-air personality, the more likely they are to go after them. I have gotten away with saying FAAAAAR worse and having guests do far worse things on the air - but no one ever complained about us. Yes, some of it was during the morning drive time as well. There are groups of people that listen to these shows with the intent on submitting complaints on anything that might be considered against the FCC laws. The FCC then gets to make the choice if what was said was "against community standards." Sometimes they overlook, sometimes a slap on the wrist, and in the case of a high-profile target that mocks them, they lay out heavy fines. Conspiracy? Well, take a look at who is running the FCC these days....think he has any connection to the Bush Admin? That is a big leap without any proof...but it makes you think. FYI - the FCC has admitted on several news shows before the Janet Boob malfunction that they are obsolete and defined by laws that no longer represent the majority of the population. Also, it has been shown that if the FCC continues this pace of fines, the "pay-for" world of radio will increase....something that for the most part is out of their reach. There are people that claim the FCC is in bed with these compaines that will profit from it as well. But then again, there is conspiracy rumor for just about anything. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. And you have to wonder if Former Gov Thompson (remeber this is a guy that allowed bribes for CDLs on his watch) is running back and forth to get phone calls from the white house like he was during Clarke's questioning. Not only is she nodding, she is often checking notes for each question, as if she knew ahead of time what the panel was going to ask her. The only time she was flustered or upset is when she was forced to answer candidly and what seemed like out of order questions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 7. ....eventually. Who would have thunk that movies like "The Core" and "Day After Tomorrow" were almost based on something real? Yahoo New Clicky Pole reversal: Feared "flip" of Earth's magnetic field takes 7,000 years PARIS (AFP) - A reversal of the Earth's magnetic field, a rare but feared event due to the catastrophic effect it could have on human life, takes about 7,000 years to complete, according to a study. The so-called "flip" between the Earth's North and South poles occurs at long but unpredictable intervals, the most recent one occurring about 780,000 years ago. The 180-degree switch occurs when there is a change in the circulation patterns in the molten iron which flows around the Earth's outer core and, like a dynamo, creates the magnetic field. The intensity of the field drops for a while before the circulation rhythm is established and the new polarity occurs. But how long the switching process takes before the new poles become established has only been guessed at. Estimates have ranged from a couple of thousand years to 28,000. US researcher Bradford Clement casts light on this area of uncertainty by analysing records taken from sedimentary samples drilled from various sites around the world. These samples, deposited at four different ages in Earth's history, have a residual magnetic echo from the magnetic field that prevailed at the time. "These records yield an average estimate of about 7,000 years for the time it takes for the directional change to occur," Clement, of Florida International University, writes in Nature, the British science weekly. The big switchover does not take place in one swoop, though. It happens faster at the Equator and takes longer at higher latitudes -- the closer one gets to the poles. The reason for this, says Clement, is that in the absence of the main North-South magnetic field, the Earth's core develops a weaker secondary field which has many "mini-poles" at the surface. Eventually the two main poles are established again, but on opposite sides of the planet, and restore their primacy. No-one knows what would happen to life on Earth if the "flip" occurred today but the speculation borders on the doomsday. Many aspects of life today would be literally turned upside down, both for humans, given our dependence on magnets for navigation, and for migrating animals which use an inner compass. We would also be more exposed to deadly busts of solar radiation, from which we are normally protected by Earth's magnetic field. And the loss of that shield would cause solar particles to smash into the upper atmosphere, warming it and potentially causing wrenching climate change. There was a scare in 2002 after French geophysicist Gauthier Hulot discovered a weakening of Earth's magnetic field near the poles, which could be interpreted as an early sign that a "flip" is near. Polarity reversals "seem to occur randomly in time," says University of Washington scientist Ronald Merrill. The shortest interval between "flips" is between 20,000 and 30,000 years, and the longest is a mighty 50 million years. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. Don't get the Quatro. It sucks. It is good for two shaves before it starts tearing up your skin. On top of that, all the hair gets stuck in the blades and even a high powered stream of water doesn't seem to clean it out. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. 1.6, and I have landed my PD Reserve off the DZ after my mal, crosswind (so I would land with the rows on the field) and put it down right in between two small rolling hills. I choose to PLF it before landing because I didn't want to take any chances with all that going on at once. Also, it is not the smallest 7 cell canopy I have jumped, and that was a factor in my decision. I can tell you this - if I land canopy without a flare, something will get broken. I have also jumped a PD Reserve as a main on three other occasions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. NO WAY!! THAT IS CRAZY!! Someone in my office told me it's nice out today, but I wouldn't know That person lied. It is beautiful outside Too bad I probably won't be able to make it out to jump this weekend. Damn job. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  15. Actually, I think the Green/Red and titles for that group is a good idea - adds a bit of emphasis to their role on the forums. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  17. It looked like the same cliff, but different exit point. I think they mentioned the cliff was about 3000 to 4000 feet. It is a pretty funny clip watching the guy strugle to get to the edge then go straight head down and watch the cliff go by (it was on his chest). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 19. I work in Admissions for a college and listen to people all day long complain about how they are not happy and hate their life. Name a field of study, job, age, demographic and I have talked to someone in that area. There are a lot of unhappy people out there....I just get them to talk about their dreams and they find it easier to make the choice of what they want to do next. I can tell you this: Focus on the word career, not job. Something that will make you happy and successful. Ah, now, what will make you happy???? Also, realize that the best college:career ratios are in very specific fields of study that are directly related to a job. (ie, dentists, lawyers, chefs, engineers, etc). Here is something I hand out to students: Set your goals. Understand the obstacles. Clear your mind of doubt. Create a positive mental picture. Embrace the challenge. Stay on track. Show the world you can do it! I can give you a call Val to help out if you want. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  20. Yea, Anything south of Atlanta is bad, Macon and Valdosta seemed to be the worse. Also, the GA cops seem to work in tag teams - one on the bridge with a speed gun who radios to his partner at the end of the entrance ramp. Watch your speed at every bridge - I forgot to once and they got me. $150 for 87 in a 65. BTW - there was a good deal of construction south of Macon. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 21. Thre are still some titles left - Sangiro and the Moderators still have theirs! I've never been a fan of PW ratings on any forum, they eventually work against the board and raise bandwidth usage. Location and/or Date registered are the best options. Anything jump related can be fabricated. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  22. On any given weekend at SDC we can have just as many new people show up - from fun jumpers to tandems. I know the first time I showed up there, Roger ran into me in the parking lot and walked me to manifest. Others now do that - Rook, Missy, Donovan, and anyone else that is a staff member there. This attitude has spilled over to everyone else and if we see anyone lurking about and they are not a familiar face, they will get an introduction and an offer of help or directions. It is a bit easier at times - the building is large enough that most of the tandem students are never near the freefly or belly area, the spectators are out at the tables watching landings, and that leaves plenty of space for fun jumpers to gather without interuption - and it makes it easy to see a new face. You will often find jumpers walking new faces directly to a LO that will be in the same skill area as the guest. The same thing happened to me the first time I went to Hinkley - the DZO nearly greeted me at my car, and showed me where everything was - and pointed me towards the LO. When it looked like there wasn't enough people to put the plane up, he sent it up with just two jumpers since he heard I had never jumped a Porter before! Needless to say that impressed the hell out of me. I can always find a DZ that has a nice plane, good LOs, etc....but if the people are not as nice, it just isn't as much fun going there....and usually will not get repeat business from me. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. I have been to 17 DZs now, in addition to Richmond, Quincy and Rantoul. I've looked at the training programs at each of those places and have seen some of them sorely lacking in many areas, gear maintenance (including the tandem rigs and canopies) to teaching methods to putting students out under round reserves. I realize the industry is not at the same place SDC is....do you think it should be? There are places that teach on Navigators that do include canopy control - but are the students as prepared to transition to non-student canopies as those that learn on Sabre 2s? As far as my skills....On jump 89 under my Stiletto I landed in a backyard, my only out on a balloon jump at Quincy....and it was a small out. My accuracy has increased from experience, and I realize I am better than now than I was in the past. I haven't tried for my Pro, but I'm sure if I really put my heart into it, I could do it....but there is always room for improvement. I aspire to have better canopy skills all the time - I love to borrow a smaller canopy for a few jumps then go back to mine to help change my perspective and help me realize I can get more out of what I already have. I'm in no rush either - I've been talking about downzizing from my current canopy for three years now. As far as bad spots - ever jump with Roger as a pilot? His spots were as bad as people said - I've landed out far to many times in my short career. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. Tom - I'm getting errors trying to download it, but will keep trying. Is it the clips of the guy tracking over a set of cliffs set up like huge stairsteps? It mentions ESPEN - is that the same guy that used to live in Iowa and was a rec.sky PW? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 25. A cold, snowy Thanksgiving morning during my student program. It was my first jump back after my knee injury - You could see the snow storm over Chicago many miles away, but clear, blue skies where we were jumping. The river was frozen, the ground was covered with snow and the sun was fighting to come thru the clouds over Chicago causing the most amazing color display I have ever seen....dark purples and blacks under the clouds with some sun pushing thru causing a rainbow in the lower layers of the clouds with bright pinks and oranges above the clouds that slowly turned into a bright blue above head. It was freezing cold, but I was so taken with the view and just getting back in the air I never realized I couldn't feel my feet or fingers. Also, knowing that I was one of the few people that were not only awake and out on that holiday - I was one of the few people anywhere in the sky. The roads were empty, including the expressway, and you could see just how sleepy the town was as well......it made the ride under canopy seem that much more exlusive and unique. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
