I think the Doctor had a good idea he wouldn't want a big guy like me waking up in the middle of it. haha....when I went in for the checkup, he went right for my mouth with some silver stick thingy (yea, thats the professional term) and I grabbed his arm and said "whoa! hold up there, we need to have a talk!" I caught him off guard. I wonder if thats why I had to sign a waiver allowing them to use restraints if needed Shhhhhhh!!! Didn't anybody ever teach you not to say that too loud?! But this is under Dr orders!!! I can get away with it! I wouldn't worry about it...it's not like when you get a filling and there is trapped gas underneath it..you just need to prevent any bleeding from the gums. The dentist should've given you something for that...or told you how to prevent it.. Mike I will see him earlier that morning before I take my flight (my job is going to hate all this time off) on Thursday. He told me about the tea bag idea which I tried last night...it seems to work, but looks like I have two tampons hanging from my mouth....must remember to cut the strings when i am on the airplane. For Max: Check this out, it is basically the same thing they gave me - some really good advice on here. I am being ultra conservative...not talking in the last 24 hours, one can of slim fast and a bit of water. The jaw hurts too much to open it up to eat anything, so it will be a few days of jello, etc.. http://healthcenter.uoregon.edu/dental/impactwisdom.htm _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The longer you stay in the sport, the more you will see it. Ask anyone that has been in the sport for some time and they have buried a jumper they knew, and others have buried friends. People will continue to get hurt, people will not listen to those trying to keep them alive, there will be politics at the DZ, you will be broke and never be able to afford all the skydives you want. And there is a good chance you will do something stupid and get hurt. You have to find your own reasons why you stay in the sport...and it has to be all about what you want, otherwise you won't last. Most people that start the sport tend to drop out within the first three years. Also, you need to find balance. Make skydiving a part of your life, not all of your life. Taking anything to extremes is unhealthy, and you have to have more than just this sport. Keep your whuffo friends, don't talk jumping to them and have a life away from the DZ. I used to get wrapped up in the prop turns, and was victim of it a few times....I have since distanced myself from it and found my passion for the sport once more. I have lost too many friends to the sport already, but I know that they would not want to be the reason why I quit. I know if I got hurt or went in I wouldn't want anyone to quit because of me. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Peeps (those yellow, sugary, Easter candy chickens)
ChasingBlueSky replied to bshl's topic in The Bonfire
Those things make my teeth hurt just looking at them. Plus, they go stale quick. I put them into the same "blech" category as circurs peanuts. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
That was during that massive downpour early in the week. They were all hiding in the hanger. I do believe our very own Jerm was the camera man. Check out Car RW during that clip as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Did they give you any written directions as to what to do and not do to avoid getting dry socket? When my son had all four of his wisdom teeth pulled over Christmas, I just told him to be careful and not suck in. Like you would on a straw. What causes the dry socket is when you suck the blood clots out. So, just don't do any sucking Thanks, Mar! I usually tend to avoid sucking at all costs They said no spitting, no straws, no rising for the first 24 hours. However, it takes a lot of work to get the damn horse pills down, and I have barely had any water since....haven't even tried to eat anything. I have a commercial flight I need to take on Thursday...I can't afford any complications. Can I tell you how happy I am to finally have them gone??? The pain right now is not as bad as the infection was on its own this morning. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... To prevent color fading in the sun?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
Maybe a rigger can look this up and correct me on it....But i was told it took 400 hours of direct sunlight to reduce the container strength in half. I forget what the number was for storing it in a heated place (like your trunk). Don't forget that if any of the harness or leg straps are bent in half you have reduced their weight tollerance. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... well, its done...I don't remember much after they put the IV in me...in fact when they tried to wake me up I freaked a bit not knowing where I was, then I thought they were trying to wake me up in the middle of the procedure. The whole thing took about an hour. They did a great job of working with me and my phobia...not bad for forcing my way into their schedule on a holiday weekend. I need to send them some flowers or candy. The Dr didn't believe me at first when I told him locals didn't work on me, but as soon as I woke up I could tell him which areas he had only put in one shot. Now I am just paranoid that everything I do will cause dry sockets. I've been pretty much stoned all day from the Nitrous, vicodin, IV, local and valium. I wish they hade given me the meds in liquid form, that would have been much easier. I'm sure I will look back on this post tomorrow and go huh? I can't feel most of my face or feet! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Check this website: Partial nudity to pay for college?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
I searched and couldn't find anything out there on this.... Oh yea - some employers may consider this NSFW These kids are using half-naked (half-clothed?)bodies as marketing tools to help pay for their college tuition. I hope that the brains behind this goes into marketing. Sorry Clay...no sheep. www.NakedText.com _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
What should packers take upon themselves?
ChasingBlueSky replied to Blahr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As a packer, and not a rigger, I look at it as my responsiblity to inform the person that their rig needs maintenance. However, I will not replace it. Why? I feel it starts them in a bad habit that can lead to complacency and the belief that someone else will go out of their way to make sure they are safe. Could I easily shorten their loop? Yup. Could I replace it? Nope - I don't keep any in my pouch. Could I make a quick buck and get them on the plane with the false belief that all packers will keep an eye out for their safety? Yes I could, but I am usually packing for friends or newbies and I don't want them "trusting" a packer because all packers are not made the same. If their gear needs maintenance, it doesn't get packed. I am ok with losing that customer or the $5 knowing that person will pay more attention to their gear. When I worked full time as a cash packer you would notice that almost all of my customers would point out anything odd or something that needed to be fixed...inlcuding rubber bands. You know what? I never pissed off anyone with this approach (even with the upjumpers) and it is one of the reasons I developed a good reputation as a safe packer. There is always room for more education and safety in this sport. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... In the gaming world when a company is pressed for a possible timeline of when a new game will be done, they often say: "It's done when it's done." It does a good job of preventing any more questions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Jack has a great point there - and if you listen to the other camera jumpers, the ones that do it for a living....you will find they all say the same thing. The average jump number tossed about is 500 jumps....I have been told by Tom Sanders, Mike McGowan, Ron Olson, Norm Kent, et all that you should no longer have to think about how to fly in the air because all of your concentration will be on getting the shot. Watch the footage on the "Good Stuff" DVD of Joe Jennings filming Rob Harris....he is flying HARD just to keep the shot. I am not flying a camera because I know I cannot fly like that and get the shot, so for now I will keep working on my flying skills. Now, ask yourself and try to come up with a very good reason why you want to add a camera to your jumps already? Do you think you will be safe and be able to handle an emergency with it on? I know off hand of two professional camera jumpers that died due to a snag on their helmet. I've seen at least a dozen other videos of lines, risers, swoop cords, etc getting stuck on the camera.....I think there are some lessons to be learned from these folk..... _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... this really isn't a good sign of things to come...I have taken two (2) 750mg vicodins and the pain from the infection is just as strong as ever!!!! I can't sleep and I have surgery in a few hours....plus, I can't drink anyting now. I have always had a problem with pain medications...most don't seem to work on me. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... So, all four wisdom teeth are coming out tomorrow morning, and they are putting me to sleep (laughing gas/IV combo). Dr had no problem with me taking a commercial flight on Thursday. He mentioned placing moist tea bags wrapped in guaze into my mouth during the flight. However, he mention three or more weeks before I could jump. He asked what alti I jumped from, and that is where he came up with that number. So, does that mean I could do hop n pops? Also - any good recommendations of food while I am recovering? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I woke up about 2am in some of the most incredible pain....turns out my jaw became infected and I crossed it off as muscle pain from working out....guess that is why I was having so many headaches. Anyway, all four are coming out at 10am tomorrow. Just dropped off the prescription for Vicodin and Amoxicilin. The Dr said three weeks before jumping....does that seem right? He had no problem with me taking a commercial flight this Thursday. Oh yea - I am going to sleep. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Dumbest thing you did skydiving
ChasingBlueSky replied to cocheese's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
--downwind landing with no flare, feet tucked behind me. I bounced up thru the risers, seperated one knee and massive damage to the other. EVERYONE at the dz that day saw it, and resulted in my first/only golf cart ride off the landing area. Even worse? I went out drinking instead of going to the hospital and couldn't figure out why I had such a bad limp until my knee popped back into place....I was in the ER very shortly after that. --off landing in a corn field and was pretty certain I was going to make the opening in the field....I landed 4 rows in and didn't have a tight enough grip on my toggle after letting go of the rear risers...toggle got snagged at the top of the 9 foot stalk and low turned me thru the remaining rows. I hit HARD and landed on my head and arm at the same time...couldn't move for some time...I was pretty certain I had broken a few bones, but was able to move in time. --first tracking dive around 40 jumps. got scared because I couldn't keep up with the group and tracked off to the side early...seeing I was way off the line of flight and far from the dz, I waved off high and deployed....turns out another person decided to follow me and nearly clipped the front of my canopy with his sandles as he went by in freefall _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Done it many times on one at 1.8. Every canopy I've owned I've stalled like the dickens. (fyi, Besides cider... I really don't know what the dickens is) I have a teeny tiny VX that I haven't stalled yet though. Yikes... How is the recovery on the loaded Stiletto? I've done it on a lightly loaded Sabre and Safire (that one didn't behave nice at all), and I have been hesitant to try it with a high WL on my Stilletto. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
