I'd say the management (Pres & Congress) gets blamed for the overall and general state of affairs. #1 rule of management . . . It's always your fault. $2.14 in the Twin Cities metro (MN/WI, USA). Must be about time to start wasting it again. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Help a newbie understand why there are so many whiny bitches here
pirana replied to HellRaiser's topic in The Bonfire
In that way it kinda resembles the rest of the real world, doesn't it? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -
What if everyone in the world got along with each other
pirana replied to LisaH's topic in The Bonfire
That has got to be just about the most boring video in the history of the world; followed immediately by any footage at all from either political convention. I kept waiting for something to explode or something. Disclaimer: The above process will reduce the amount of time you feel like an ass, but will not cure you being an ass condition. THE ABOVE STATEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN APPROVED, SANCTIONED OR EVALUATED BY THE FAA (or the FDA, which ever is in charge of Assholes transportation and reduction) That is very close to what I do. It works great. If I catch it immediately (1st sign of scratchy throat) it sometimes barely gets any worse. It always shortens it to no more than a couple days. Amazing. I got this "remedy" from wife, who, as a fitness instructor had no time for illness in her schedule. Works right thru her colds, no sweat. Well, lots of sweat, but no sweat. I have no problems with the dry as hell Brit humour, but then again, I also have a damn Brit for a boss, and I have to make her think she is funny......Sorry if you read this Rosi. Mark edited because I forgot to add the yellow face. You guys have lost me; I am totally in the dark on this one. (But then again, entire pop culture eras can go by without me noticing). Emoticons are of Japanese origin? People with blond hair and black roots are outcasts in NZ? Do they have black roots because they dyed their blond hair black, or does this have to do with African heritage? And very few of these people live by the emoticon culture? Maybe I do understand and just don't know it? I don't like the separatist and polarizing labels of liberal and conservative. My personal policy preferences make me a hybrid; so I'm not voting. My opinion on the topic though is that the burden should be placed on eligible voters to get their shit together so they do not have to worry about being excluded; rather than put the burden on the government to open up the vote to potential fraud so that lazy or stupid eligibles that do not have their shit together can vote anyway. If an eligible voter monkeyfarts around to the point where they can not prove they are eligible - then they don't get to vote. That does not excuse assinine rules that make it a difficult process. Would you mention that you are a skydiver?
pirana replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In general, I'd say do not mention it. It will make you stand out; and it might be in a bad way. Better have a damn good read on your interviewer before you take the chance. Most of the non-skydiving public sees our sport as Club Death Wish. The fact that they perk up and ask questions and what not might just mean you broke their boredom - not that they think you are suddenly the person for the job. Smallish Canopy for Beginner
pirana replied to FlyinBrian87's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No canopy choice advice from me; the veterans here, and especially at your DZ, got that nailed. Nothing wrong with asking here. The experienced guys especially have lots of good words of wisdom. But consider it food for thought and ideas to discuss with the seasoned vets and instructors who know you personally and have seen you fly. If you don't have to have the cash for other purposes, consider stashing that bad boy in a dark dry place for when you might be ready. I held on to a Stilleto 135 for 4 or 5 years. When I was ready it was like a big free present to myself. Probably a lot to do with tradition; but they do play in a light rain or drizzle. A bit of a different sport though. I can't imagine trying to hit professional level pitching in much more than a light drizzle. . . . even if the Cubs had won the World Series in their last appearance (1945), they would still hold the longest streak of never having won. . . . albeit an obvious one, that Cubs players dominate the list of players that have played the most games but never appeared in a World Series. . . . the Yankees hold the 2nd highest streak for consecutive World Series wins at 4. They also hold the highest mark at 5. They have won a pennant in every decade, and have World Series wins in all but 2 of the decades of their existence. Actually, only 4 of the last 20 World Series have made it to 7 games. In fact, in 10 of the last 20, they never made it past game 5. Cliff Claven has now left the building. What entitlement programs would you cut, and how much would it save?
pirana replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Defense spending. Isn't it by far the biggest drain, and the one that includes maintaining the most oudated and unneeded programs? According to the Ben Cohen video posted a while back (the one with the stacks of Oreos), we could cut just the most frivolous, wasteful, and unnecessary programs and solve all of our problems. Not an expert, so taking it in good faith; and would be interested to know if it could be refuted. (IMO, defense spending, like most allocations, have become entitlements. Anybody who has worked in a large bureacracy knows how difficult it is to bring a program to an end, even after it is no longer productive or needed). They will still be there. He'll be writing checks and we'll be picking up the balance. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

I'm holding out to see who Helio Castroneves endorses. With such a cool name, he's gotta have it right. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

You are most welcome. I used to post there a lot, less frequently now. I mostly just enjoy reading the science and math threads (since the level of expertise there is way out of my league); but I do enjoy the OFF TOPIC BABBLING section. You obviously didn't watch Zeitgeist did you? The basis of asrology is about the sun's cycles and how it effects us everyday, season to season year to year. Whichever side of the fence you sit on open your mind for two hours and think about it afterwards rather than while you are watching it. I've watched it. Is is absolute garbage. It is appealing to some people's emotions, to their sense of paranoia, and to their need to be in on a really big really cool secret. Yes, the Sun has power over our lives. It provides the energy that makes life in our solar system possible. However, if you think there is some force that acts on us as individuals, in different ways for different people; then I would ask what the mechanism of influence is. By exactly what physical process do the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets guide my individual life (other than the homogenous influence they exert on the planet Earth as a whole)? My mind is open, but not so far that my brain falls out. A great site, with many real live genuine physicists participating in the forums! The best I've found to chat with people about astronomy & physics; with a healthy dose of debunking going on at all times. The site started out critiquing the very poor portrayal of physics and astronomy in popular movies, books, TV, etc, and, IMO, has become one of the premier debunking sites out there (along with Mr Randi's efforts). It is however promoted as a family friendly site; so some here might not like it. No profanity, no politics (outside the topic of it's influence on space exploration) and no religion (other than as part of a critical examinatin of the science involved or the study of religions). Packer common courtesies...
pirana replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It is good to see that the business of packing is still ruled by pure market forces. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -
Never had a B, never had call for it. Still don't have the D. I'll probably apply for the D when I hit 1000 jumps; then stop logging altogether. A printout from manifest at the end of the season is good enough. You watch them toddle thru the good times and the bad, offer encouragement and instruction, open up your heart and expose your soul; then one day, . . . they are gone. So sad. Who was it again? Over 30,000 pages of regulation isn't enough? Tough choice. We can forego regulation and allow natural selection to run it's course. That and prosecution of offenders of established law will recuce the chances of idiots hurting themselves and others. Or we can legislate every detail of daily life. Are there really no laws that would dictate children below a certain age not be allowed to use a firearm? The problem I have with him is that on the one big issue of this campaign on which I am relatively expert (health insurance and health care financing), he is all wet. I've spent my entire adult career both in the trenches of operations and providing consulting; and the crap ALL of the candidates put out there (or at least there backing organizations) are carefuly crafted messages to appeal to people's emotions. It is totally worthless drivel that proves that either: 1 - They don't know shit; or . . . 2 - They know their shit but have given up on trying to speak meaningfully to the issue because that will not help get them elected. All of that makes me wonder if the same thing is happening on the issues with which I am not knowledgeable. Are any of them saying anything meaningful about anything? It occurs to me that we are firmly committed to pussyfooting around all the tough issues because real solutions are guaranteed to: 1 - Offend the sensibilities of some person or some group or another. 2 - Upset the status quo. That together with the not-in-my-back-yard mentality creates a change-proof gridlock. Everybody wants entitlements put on the table - except their own of course. 3 - Scare people. Beyond just maintaining status quo privileges and special considerations; the threat of real change scares the shit out of people. It's the old devil you know versus the devil you don't know syndrome. People's fear of an unknown and the pain it may cause is far more motivating than their dislike of the pain they know. It's why things have to get so unbelievably fucking bad before we move to action. Look at the auto industry. The writing was on the wall for decades, yet there was almost no change in the way that business was carried out until we were way down the path of losing that business to overseas competition. Back on health care and it's financing - - it is a local good/service that can't be imported or exported, the controllers of supply have it really locked down and are protected by very powerful lobbies (AMA & the med schools), and demand seems to be driven by some bizarre utopian principle that has a lot of people feeling they deserve a Caddy even if they can only afford a Chevy. Something really big has got to give at some point because over the last 2 decades the cost of care has averaged double-digit percentage increases. Utilization and cost per encounter keep going up; resulting in bigger premiums to employers; which then translate to bigger deductibles, copays, and premium contribution for patients. It's hardly insurance once we get to the point where everybody has a $20K deductible. ($5K and even $10K are becoming increasingly common). Is that 2nd picture for real? It looks like half a dozen large pieces of stuff being thrown out of 3 planes. Who'd want to be in the air with that?
