Anybody else see Stewart's special live post-inauguration show last night. Love that show, he skewers them all. Best was the montage of clips from Bush and Obama speeches in which they said, almost word for word, the same exact things about God, peace, strength, security, terrorism, jobs, etc. Granted, Obama's actions may be different (we can only hope), but their rhetoric is almost identical. I wonder what the Obama crew's reaction was when their research showed that what the American people wanted to hear was the same as what Bush has been saying all along? Well, maybe a rhetorical question, because obviously there reaction was to write a speech in which he did in fact say the same things Bush has been saying all along. Let's hope there is a difference in execution. USPA Membership Dues& Rating Fees going up?
pirana replied to chriswelker's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If that is net expense (after advertising revenue), then definitely can the magazine. I like the idea of putting it online. Online it could still include advertising. Wonder how the numbers would work out? I did so many reckless things as a youngster, it is truly amazing I'm still alive. Started at age 9 and getting hit by a car while riding bicycle, progressed thru falling 40' out of a tree, getting hit by motorcycle while riding bicycle, making an incredibly lucky grab-save while free climbing a rock wall, getting hit by a truck while riding motorcycle (the scariest feeling one by far - really really thought I was going to die), very nearly getting trapped in a burning building, plus a couple others that didn't have quite the fatality potential. The scariest part is that one of my daughters is of the same ilk. I don't want to see her get hurt badly, but am kinda hoping she has a nasty scare or two so she'll pause to think once in a while. Thank you for that; very funny. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

4 previous Presidents named Roosevelt, Grant, Kennedy, and Clinton were younger. Jeez, man... if you can't get the undisputed facts correct how can you expect to be taken seriously? Yep, the OP signifies a lot conspiracy theorist potential. My acid test for that is to find out if they think the moon landing was faked. Mostly straightforward; but what is the "bit at the top"? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

ANOTHER downsizing-thread..
pirana replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Really, everyone with 200 jumps at your home DZ jumps an Icarus? You can not consistently stand up more than half your landings and somebody of authority that watches you jump regularly is giving the green light to move to an eliptical 119? And you want to downsize, go eliptical, and desire a shorter recovery arc so you can start swooping? Yikes! I know you begged not to be flamed in your OP, but you are begging for it in the stuff you've typed so far. May I buy some life insurance on you and be the beneficiary? Pat's lament on communication loss

Nice poetic post. But what is the skinny behind the fold? Financial? Couldn't be produced for what people were willing to pay? Time and effort? Those that were doing it moving on? USPA Membership Dues& Rating Fees going up?
pirana replied to chriswelker's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sounds like good advice; and as usual of course, the devil is in the details. Simply spending less than is taken in sounds easy; except you also add that you do not think we get enough for the money already. So it is a bit of a conundrum (you want them to spend less, which boils down to doing less, but you already think you don't get enough). One thing might be to make the magazine optional. That must cost a good chunk of the dues. Has it ever been considered to make it optional and discount the dues for those that opt out? How about skiing? Good fun, can be very physical. Basketball maybe? You must have good balance, coordination, and strength what with all the dancing. Hit the local Y or other club; most have some sort of winter league. Oh NO you're not! Chuck I'm also not much for the Star Wars movies. I am beginning to think that a lot of what is in here are just movies people think did not live up to their billing (slightly different than worst movie ever). Some people's way of saying they didn't like it and maybe don't understand why so many people do. Kind of like when a woman says somebody is constantly doing something. Means they did it once, and the woman didn't like it. For the record, my choice for extremely overrated movie; Ordinary People. I mean jeez, it won an Oscar? I could see where a lot of people might not put it on or near the top; but how do you arrive at Schindler's List being one of the worst of all time? I mean there are a lot of really bad movies, and you think Schindler's list is worse than all of them? What is the reason for not liking it that much? You a Holocaust denier? Rats. I thought we might all get out of spring cleaning this year, what with the end of the world and all. Now we have to tidy up to get ready for the fall demolition of the world or the USA, or humankind or whatever the wacko target of choice is this season. I don't normally pay attention to fashion . . .
pirana replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
Finished typing it for you. I knew someone would turn that into an allegation of racism. It's too bad that your sense of humor is going to be taking a vacation for the next four years. And dear Wendy, I came up with that all by my little lonesome - I didn't even read that other thread. I look forward to international dinners in the White House of chittlin' and okra. rehmwa: Imagine when the first homosexual is elected president - the White House will become the Pink House. How do you know there hasn't been one already. I don't normally pay attention to fashion . . .
pirana replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
Anybody who uses the word "outfit" to describe what a person is wearing is way beyond me in fashion sense. But I have to agree here. Based on the picture, she really needs to wear something a little less, . . . boxy. Is that a fashion term? Boxy? What the hell is abstinence training? Somebody standing in front of a bunch of pre-teens and teens and saying "Don't have sex!"? You think that works? HA! Guess all those pregnant teens must have missed the meeting. It is proven to be ineffective. That you think otherwise is irrelevant. That any taxpayer money gets dumped in such an ineffective program is just pure politically driven stupidity. Maybe if they keep saying "Don't have sex!" for a couple more generations, the kids will suddenly stop having sex? HA! Guess what? Kids have been having sex since the beginning of time; and will continue to keep having sex. It is the nature of things. No amount of taxpayer money dumped on paying middle-aged stuffed suits and dewy-eyed teens that themselves made the mistake of getting pregnant is going to stop that. Oh sure, now tell me about the entire syllabus, with all the charts and graphs and testimonies and elderly wisdom and yakity yakity yak. To the kids this is interpreted as "Don't have sex, yakity yak, blah blah, yada yada yada." Who will the liberals hate once Obama is in power?
pirana replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
I have seen parts of a couple episodes of that recently. My wife really likes it. Killer Chef or something like that. The guy is just a mean bastard. He's worse than what I've seen of the one dude on American Idol. I don't get at all why people watch "reality" TV. I find it very not like real life, or normal life, or . . . you know what I mean. Maybe I hang with the sweetest circle of friends on Earth; because I don't know anybody who is as nasty as just about everybody on "reality" TV. I think they will seek out anybody having fun at Mother Earth's expense and continue to skewer them regardless of party affiliation. Anybody that has fun that involves use of fossil fuels, internal combusiton engines, etc - BAD. Anyone that leaves footprints on Mother's forest floor while having fun - BAD! Anyone that makes noise while having fun - BAD! On multiple fronts that makes the 3 best things in life - sex, skydiving, and dirt biking - BAD! I'd better turn in my membership card. Well, we don't have much around here that would qualify as right wing militia groups. The closest thing might be the varsity football coaches, the volunteer fire department, . . . maybe the Girl Scouts. Those are all pretty conservative organizations, . . . not very militant though. But they all do have a pledge, and all like to wear uniforms, and all sell snacks once a year to raise money. I take that back, the volunteer fire department is running the beer concession at this year's ice fishing contest. Does beer count as a snack? Are you sure of this? I know very few people who attend church on Sundays. Actually, the number of people engaging in religious practices is decreasing. If it weren't for the population explosion going on in certain very religious places - - it would be dropping like a rock. Contrary to what Speakers Corner would have you to believe, religion is not going away. The percentage of believers even in non-population exploding areas has been constant or increasing for decades. My source is not SC. Belief in divine beings is falling fast in Europe and the US. What is your source? I shared mine a while back in a different thread. I believe it was a NYT recap of a very thorough study. Links to the actual study were in the article.
