Reminds me of one of the most assholish VP's I've ever worked for. One of his favorite sayings when things got tight and it looked like we might not deliver "There will be execution by the deadline, one way or another." He thought it was cute and cool because it always seemed to get some smattering of nervous laughter. Ah, the Bertrand Russell approach to Life, the Universe, and Everything. It is all meaningless because the Universe is almost certainly going to either collapse to a singularity and leave no trace or expand forever to a heat death and leave no trace. As an aside, most futurists agree that as long as we do not destroy ourselves via man-made means, we will eventually develop the technology to move off of Earth well ahead of the time the Sun's death throes will destroy it. That buys us a few billions of years. What with the pace of change, and the pretty much constantly accelerating pace of change, a few million years is a very long time, much less a couple billion. Look what we've done in just the last century; and the acceleration of change in just the past few decades. But back on track; true, total heat death from an ever-expanding Universe does have a finite timeline; but it is so far out there that to be so apathetic for the very next generation is very bizarre. Horrific thought, but that might incent someone to off one of their kids. We are talking really whacked out people ya know. It would be much easier to euthanize the whole familly. What the hell, throw in the short bus kids while you are at it. Now THERE is the SC response we've all been waiting for! Do what they do in Darfur. Use them for kindling. (I am of course being morbidly unserious). Yes, it is that 1% we're talking about here ... what should we do with them? I think in the name of human compassion we have to take care of that 1%. Continue efforts to educate in order to keep the percentage as low as possible; impose consequences of some sort, maybe look for incentives. I'm pretty hard core on owning the consequences for the behaviors; but make allowances for the infirm, the very old and the very young. For the record, I think she is nuts; probably mentally ill to some degree or another. And the Dr ought to be brought up for scrutiny of some sort. But the babies need to be cared for. That, and the fact that until the fairly recent past kids were an asset for most anybody. Now, at least in most affluent nations, they are considered a liability, financially. A very good magazine. I don't agree with all of their views, but they are as fair as it gets. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

altimeters-checked baggage or carry on?
pirana replied to bigbearfng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I wonder how often that kind of shit happens? My wife's CD/Walkman got lifted out of her checked bag about 10 years ago. What's to stop them? What are the chances someone living hundreds or thousands of miles away can even effectively press the issue. We called the airline and they were totally flippant about even making note of the theft. Sounds like a lot of activities. You keep hitting new plateaus and looking back each time and thinking "I didn't know shit." Finally you gain enough wisdom to know that the plateaus never end. There is no summit; and you just keep climbing. No one wants to jump with a newbie :(
pirana replied to katzg08's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Where I jump we are all mixed up. Teams doing serious training, team members fun jumping, fun jumpers fun jumping, zoo dives, tandems, AFF, wingsuits, CRW, FF, swoops, H&P's, etc. A little of everything and a lot of fun. We got it all. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley -
Watched it all the way thru for the first time last night. (Had never seen about half the scenes). " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Anybody ever jump here: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Goodenow&state=IL#a/maps/l:::Goodenow:IL::US:41.391399:-87.636703:city:Lake+County:1/m:hyb:7:41.391399:-87.636703:0:::::/io:0:::::f:EN:M:/e Can't remember the name of the airport, and it was even smaller back in the 60's/70's. Just outside a tiny blink of an unincorporated town named Goodenow (Il). My conection to it was that as a little kid I lived on a farm in the area, and could see the jumpers descending under their rounds. Years later, as a teen, me and a few friends lived at an old abandoned farm only a mile from this airport. Never saw any skydivers those later years (late 70's). Be cool though if there happened to be a grizzled skydiver or two that remembered the place. Non-grizzled would be OK too. Agreed. The studies I've read indicate the single largest influence (or at least coorelation) on crime rates was the Roe v Wade decision. Unwanted, or unplanned kids (or maybe it's just kids raised in an environment not conducive to healthy behaviors in general) are far more likely to become delinquents. Very incorrect PC-wise. The far left will argue to no end that it is somebody else's fault outright; and even many in the middle are uncomfortable laying the blame where it belongs. Kids (especially single kids) should not have kids. My daughter's class disected a shark a couple days ago. She won the right to keep one of the eyes. It is sitting in a jar on the kitchen counter. I asked her how long she intended to keep it. She said forever. Strange child. Us ambidextrous folks represent an evolutionary advance of humankind. We can use any pair of scissors, we don't care which side of the column the turn signal lever is on, and we can do that neat trick on the chalkboard where you write with both hands at once. Enjoy the special thrills of your newness. Flat out nailing some 4-way exits, not funneling skydives, 4 of you flying a perfectly paraded pattern to landing. Take pride in your accomplishments and wear that newb label proudly. We (the handful of us sharing space at the time on the early part of the learning curve) even referred to ourselves as The Sky Scum, and had fun with it. (I see that moniker is picked up by multiple groups of up and coming fallers). We just kept at it, and kept getting better in increments, and always jumped at any chance offerred to jump with and learn from the veterans. They watch you, help you, and when you are ready - bring you along on bigger and more sophisticated dives. Make it easy for them to do that by demonstrating consistent behaviors, especially safety-wise. Heed their advice, earn their respect, be safe; and before you know it you will be one of the guys inviting the newbs to come learn and have fun. It's all very very good. Rhetoric -The ability to use language effectively. -The art of making persuasive speeches; oratory. I think its safe to say that Bush ain't gots no rhetoric. You'd have to see the show. As already mentioned, but it bears repeating, we'll need pictorial evidence to verify the situation - but I have never heard of such a thing (Cute Blond Ignored at DZ). Sounds like a fake headline from The ONION. Quite the opposite. When I was starting out I sometimes got irked because many of the hotshots went above and beyond any call of duty to invite the good looking gals on damn near everything. Thank goodness for the handful of experienced guys that would reach out to us not so cute, not so blond, not so female folks. More Prof the AWG Alarmists are Running Out of Time...

In nutshell; the average global temperature is climbing in little increments that, because of the fragile balances that exist within our ecosystem, may be significant enough and have enough momentum to already be beyond the point of no return. Carbon in the atmosphere however is not climbing incrementally - it has increased dramatically. IMO, the prudent thing to do is to play it safe and do what we can to reverse that trend. It may be too late (my personal opinion is that it's WAY too late), but we should try. A separate issue is whether or not humans are responsible for the changes. It would seem pretty logical that we are responsible for the 25 to 30% rise in carbons, so I can not figure out how people can deny the human tie to temperature increase. The biggest problem is that the issue is no longer about the science but has instead been politicized to the point that it is hard to get straight facts without also getting agenda driven conclusions mixed in. I agree wholeheartedly. I was really impressed with what I read yesterday about his actions during his first day in office. Same here; and I do think he will behave much differently. Mostly I just found the similarity in the public pontifications very humorous. The orders signed so far appear to signal an incredible about face in policy. I really liked his reference to Bushs' treatment of science. I am anxious to see if he chimes in on the upcoming round of creationism versus evolution brewing in Texas. As an aside, the Discovery Institute "expert" on the history of science says that evolution does not adequately explain the Cambrian explosion, citing it as occurring 150 million years ago. Meanwhile, the head of the Texas BOE, insists that the Earth is only a few thousand years old. The dipstick can't even stay in step with his own expert.
