  1. Just about as fucking cool as it gets. Outdone only by something totally nondescript; something like a 4-door midsize, faded but not rusted, and so ubiquitous you can't even tell the make from more than 100' away. 2. So let me get this straight. Some whacked out immature asshole threatens to sabotage a jumpship because . . . ? Because it is visiting a drop zone they do not go to? The lack of logic is only matched by the level of stupidity it takes to make that threat via telephone. Shouldn't be too difficult to find them. 3. at the risk of sounding stupid (i'm used to it), what is a terminal lake? A lake that only has water flowing in, not out. But if it only flows in, and never flows out; wouldn't it eventually fill up and overflow? And how come the oceans are all saltwater, but most lakes, streams, rivers, etc are freshwater? And what keeps the water in our stream flowing on the surface versus just seeping into the ground? I could run the hose for days on end and the water just keeps soaking into the soil without creating a stream. Better get this right, cuz my next question is about magnetism; and the show starts in 30 minutes. 4. Doesn't really seem to me to be meeting the objective by landing on a multi-million dollar ramp that by it's very design is created to avoid the need to perform a landing as we currently define landing. If being caught by a ramp designed to match glide path is considered landing it; then why not just land in a giant pit filled with the foam used in emergency landings of aircraft? That would be as much of a landing as using a ramp. If they can't land it on relatively flat tera firma, I don't think it counts. Sure, they will have accomplished a truly stunning stunt, but not what I would call a landing; more of a catch by the ramp. Just my opinion. 5. As difficult as it is to get a handle on cool (getting a good handle on anything automatically makes it uncool), a BMW is definitely not it. A BMW is the ultimate upper-middle wannabee ride; extremely bourgeoise, the absolute opposite of cool. Utilitarian (fulfilling basic functional needs) or highly exotic are both acceptable. The stuff in between, the $40K to $150K "sports" cars are for those that want to put on a show and portray some image or another but can't afford the real thing. I worked for a non-union GE shop for a while and they treated us very well; didn't want to give anybody a reason to listen to the union recruitment propoganda. My next job was with Thrall Car, a union shop; and the company treated us like shit - well, as bad as they could without violating the contract. 7. Got my lesson for a 12 pak of Heinies. Jam it in. It'll open, . . . most likely. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. And that is how we know the Earth to be shaped like a banana. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  9. I come up with about $28; and figure that with certain costs being rather fixed, the more I jump the cheaper it gets. 10. I'll second Z-Hills for the vibe. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  11. My general opinion on how far into the weeds a government should go probably aligns closely with Libertarian philosophy. Less is almost always better. Defend our borders and foster productive relations via diplomacy. Keep domestic order and maintain a legal code as necessary to do so. Tax & spend authority as needed to maintain infrastructure. Record keeping & a census. Born, married, died (or as we geographers put it - hatch, match, and dispatch). That's about it. Owning, subsidizing, propping up, giving breaks, etc to any private business would be right out. While we're on the topic though; the glaring inconsistency in most people's principles is at a level I'd call totally fucking ridiculous. Subsidization of sports teams happens pretty regularly with no questions asked; well, not enough to stop most local governments from giving their fellow millionaires a couple hundred million in "incentives." But auto companies and banks get a different response. And what about small businesses? If any business group deserves a break it is the independent entreprenuer. Further proof that most humans are emotive animals that occasssionally plug in their brain instead of thinking animals that are subject to occassional fits of emotion. 12. I didn't know the difference. Is this something everyone should know? Paralympics I could guess. Special doesn't really tell me anything. Until this post I would have guessed they were a single event. 13. The opportunity has presented itself, had a skydiver been on board: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_Flight_243 http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/publications/tp185/2-07/Images/Maintenance1.jpg In that situation, I would probably prefer to take my chances with my parachute, rather than stay with that crippled plane. I remember al the good tasteless jokes after that Aloha accident: Would you like smoking or non-smoking? Patio seating? Large gaping hole or no large gaping hole? 14. Been a while since I read it, but I'm pretty certain the book on Lockerbie said there were people still alive when they hit the ground. Crash landed in their seats and died shortly after impact. Sounds far-fetched but the book seemed very well researched and cited witness accoonts. 15. Yes, live in something other than a trailer. In case you need to ask, a tent is a move on the wrong direction. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  16. Agree with the Legion on this. Care for services related to serving in the military should not result in any out-of-pocket expenses at all. They can shuffle funds around however they want, but that does not make any part of the bill go away, and there is no actual savings. Any burden placed on the patient is just wrong; and any portion shifted to a commercial carrier will just increase premiums. Do they think that playing hide-the-pea actually makes the pea disappear? 17. It's called listening. Less talking, more listening. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  18. Speaking of the party being over; if the author of this opinion piece really thinks the 2-party system is going to end soon (as the plug for his book alludes), then his credibility is somewhere between zip and zilch. 20. Actually, they did both; quite intentionally. Therapy heh? How's that working out? Tell me about your childhood. 21. Not long at all. You should try being me. I CAN'T STOP MYSELF!!!!! Oh yes by the way. Very well said. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  22. You realize that post supports the criticisms of some here. What are your sources? Hopefully not teachers. Global warming is a measureable fact. The disagreement is on how much humans are contributing and whether or not it is a significant special cause deviation from the known cycles. Universe versus multi-verse and formation of the Universe are pretty much the same discussion, and any scientist worth their weight in nuetrinos will tell you it is basically speculation, and could very well never be known to the degree that we could call it a proof. Formation of Earth, much less formation of the Grand Canyon, is well understood. Who is telling you these things are not understood? The Discovery Institute? The psuedo-science shows on TV? Are you picking at relatively minor details amongst some of the theories on the details of the mechanics, or are you seriously saying that in general, we do not know how planets form? Guess what? There is a lot of really good debate on the exact mechanics of the human genetic code; but if you think that is reason to doubt the genetic code as the means of inheritance and the foundation of evolution, you have been very poorly informed. You know someone who doesn't think the dinosaurs are extinct? Just funning you there, but again you are caught up in mechanical details that are of only secondary importance. Mass extinctions happen, and the one at the K-T boundary that included the end of the dinosaurs wasn't even close to being THE BIG ONE. You can do some research if you like for better details; but I believe it was an event prior to the pre-Cambrian explosion that there was an extinction that wiped out at minimum 80% of all species. THAT is a big die-off. The important nugget there is about mass-extinctions. The fact that a few scientists still hold out on the meteor impact theory should not disuade you from science as the arbiter of truth. Eventually we will probably gather enough evidence to make a definitive declaration that it was a volcano or meteor or some other form of annihilation. That is the wonderful thing about science, it builds from solid foundations and keeps correcting the details. You should question your sources (as science always does) ans especially question the motivations of any source that asks you to discount well understood foundations because of missing details that do not change that foundation. The Discovery Institute, and all others like them, count on being able to sway people with poor logic and sensational claims. If I can get it to load, attached is a fun example. I tend to think it is the fault of those that elected them and the fault of those that think the rules should be made so that life takes little effort. We have built a society where consumerism is king, where everyone thinks they have a right to everything but a lot think they shouldn't have to work so hard at it, where looking good is more important than generating results. What that gets you is everyone shopping at Wal-Mart and buying cheap throwaway bullshit products on way too easy credit, everyone gets to own some shitbox of a house made of vinyl and waferboard, schools that are more concerned with producing the next generation of orderly little shopaholic drones, etc etc. Anybody that is surprised for us having arrived at this particular flavor of circumstances has had their head in the sand. 25. I gotta call 'Bullshit' on that one... What DZ feeds the pilot?! we do. some poor sod witnessed this. Looks like he is speaking into his sandwich. Poor overworked bartard.
