  1. So what are these "TSA locks?" Is that just a reference to the cable ties? Or are they now selling locks that we can use to keep out everybody but the TSA? Agree with the fox/henhouse statement though. We had a DVD player stolen on a trip. Suppose that could have been a ramp rat though. 2. Never heard of the law you mention being signed by Bush. Since most health plan regulation is at the state level, my guess is that it is not true - not to mention your experience indicates that also. Move to a different state. Where do you live that they are allowed to exclude stuff like skydiving from a health policy? It would definitewly go against the grain in any state with a progressive approach towards making coverage available. As an aside, especially for base jumpers; be aware that most health policies exclude coverage for injurues incurred during the commission of a crime. So if you fall off a tower while trespassing; do what someone mentioned earlier in the thread. Ditch the skydiving gear and have someone give you a relatively gentle thumping with their car. No wait; then auto subrogation kicks in. Damn. 3. I've had my bags pulled for inspection many times (as evidenced by the little card they leave inside telling you the bag was opened for manual inspection) and never once have they called my name. 4. Makes perfect sense to me. Stuffed shirt types with highly suppressed urges would be far more likely to have hidden kinky outlets. Probably also explains the high rate of pedophilia in those that run the Catholic church. Spending your entire life pretending sex for fun doesn't exist is bound to drive a person to wierdness. 5. I've made a 7 figure income, pissed it all away on drugs, alcohol, fast cars and other narcotic pasttimes and still hate the idea of supporting other people on account of their lack of intelligence and/or responsibility. (We are supposed to include the cents columns in that income figuring thing, right?) 6. Skydiving in particular has a terrible track record of judging between the two. Given that it seems incapable, it should probably stick to what's legal. _Am I actually see the record as pretty good. What are the rough numbers? About 3 million skydives per year About 20 to 30 fatalities per year Almost all fatalities being user error So the fatality rate is roughly 1 per 100,000 skydives; and most are user error. Most unfortunate for the few that were not user error, but I think that is a pretty decent record considering the risks involved. 7. I wouldn't pop the main and repack it any more than I would pop the reserve and ask a different rigger to do it again. Silly. 8. In my experience (and what has been related by me to many others), the video will be viewed a few times right away, then maybe a few more times in the next couple years (mostly to show others), then collect dust for a decade or so until you forget it exists, or store it in the basement with other rarely used items, or toss it. Especially if you will continue, use the money elsewhere. It'll buy 4 or 5 skydives. I got video of my tandem and AFF 2 dive. They are of absolutely no interest to me now. 9. Oh come on; can you really sit and watch that now and not see how corny it is? The mark of a great movie is that it's cornyness does not increase with time. Very few movies are great, most look really corny, stupid, trite, horribly acted, etc 20 years later. You realize how badly you were being handheld thru the story by the writer and/or director. 10. You do realize that a couple of the factors in those extrapolations are truely guesses, for which we have no way of knowing the real value, or even a meaningful range. The result is that the anser is that there are somewhere between 0 and billions of other locations supporting life - that is what we know for sure. Don't get me wrong, my personal opinion is that the likelihood is very high, but without evidence everybody's opinion on this one is just a guess. Yes, it is an extrapolation, but with a range like that it is pretty meaningless. I do agree, as any good logician would, on your comments on the burden of proof. 11. You are totally free to push for legislation to remove all of those pesky ordinances, regulations, laws, etc. Good luck with that, and careful what you your little anarchist heart wishes for. 12. Those options are way to narrow. Different situations call for different measures. In the case of say, IdI Amin, whatever revolution can be pulled off. In the case of removing some of the goofs we've elected here in the USA, all you have to do is vote. 13. Rule 2A: When somebody goes in, you have to pretend to have liked them regardless of the relationship you had with them when they were alive. Rule 2B: You can not graze the buffet provided the day of an ash dive unless you bring something for the table. (Sorry for the morbidity, but you started it). 14. When she shows up at the post office and cancels the hold order. And why is the USA, as well as every reference I can recall of any political subdivision, done so in the female gender? But seriously, for most of what you've listed, those things have been left behind. We have been headed towards socialism for a while now, and it will only become more pervasive with time. Individual responsibility, owning behavior and the resultant consequences, the idea that people must shoulder their fare share of a burden - have gone into the background in favor of taking care of people. There needs to be both, but we have gone way out of balance. I don't see it coming back anytime soon. Sorry; did I provide foder for debate. 15. Damn. I thought it was Government Mandated Orgasms. I was guessing Giant Mocha Oreos. mmm.. Do they make those? What about Giant Mammary Organs? Oh yes. I've seen them in Double Stuff version. 16. Actually ,Pirana, anarchy simply defined is a system where he with the most guns rules. Freedom is the ability to do as one pleases. I for one believe in the right to do as one pleases as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of others. Blues, Cliff Anarchy is much broader than guns or weapons in general. It is the absence of law. Granted, anarchy may lead to increased violene in general, and specifically to gun violence - but he with the most guns rules is not the definition of anarchy. That last comment sounds reasonable, except that it is also wide open to interpretation, resulting in much conflict. Which is why we engage in the contract. It sets the terms of what rights we have, and when they are deemed to have been unfairly or unjustly interfered with. 17. People have been pissing and moaning about the Constitution going away ever since the thing was signed. It's not a ticket to heaven and it's not like everyone walks around asking themselves if what they want is Constitutional or not. Hell, it not only allowed slavery, it counted Blacks as 2/3 of a person for the census, and actually had to be amended before women could vote in all fifty states. What the Constitution DOES is give us a a framework to keep working, or struggling at the things we think are worthwhile. The Constitution may "guarantee" our freedoms, but that doesn't stop all kinds of people with agendas from running roughshod all over us. What the constution DOES do is to give us the means to fight back. It gives the President, congress, and courts the means to step in and impose limits when one or the other of them tries to grab too much power to themselves. Not to sound trite, but it is what we make of it - and gives us the means to go about trying. Very well said Mr Brown. Whenever I say your name I think of Reservoir Dogs. 19. Agreed; and with similar experiences. I spent a couple weeks in Kenya (often touted as one of the more advanced African nations) and was surprised to be warned by a local to keep my voice down when talking politics. One of their laws required a portait of their President be prominently displayed in every business. I poked a little fun at that and he looks around the restaurant to see who is within earshot and warns me in hushed tones to shut up. Did a little research before our trip and one thing that really caught my attention was that Malawi (at that time at least) had a law about length of hair for men. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  20. I agree that is not a good law; but to me freedom is more than a single-issue topic. And I think this one will change eventually; just gotta wait for enough of the holdout generation to die off. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

  22. Irrelevant. That was an employment decision. Mr. Imus was perfectly free to state his opinion, and his employer was perfectly free to fire him for it. With freedoms come responsibility and consequences. Do you think Mr. Imus being guaranteed his job regardless of his employer's desire to fire him equals a freedom? There are plenty of media outlets outside the mainstream. You are perfectly free to use them. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  23. Any proof of this? I've read summaries of quite a few studies and the risk of significant harm from vaccination is very close to nil; definitely much less risky than not getting vaccinated. Taking an anti-vaccine stance puts you on the fringe of the black helicopter crowd. An objective look at the evidence overwhelmingly supports vaccination. Would you rather return to the days before we had vaccines for things like polio, tetanus, smallpox, etc.? Do the people who think they are not free feel that each individual should be able to live by their own set of personally decreed laws? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  24. This is what I mean by the Social Contract. If a persons idea of freedom is not having any rules they don't like, then they are about anarchy, not freedom. In a functioning society, living in that society means accepting the contract, and working within it for the changes you desire. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Make no mistake about it, the Bush family, going all the way back to Prescot, has been intimately tied into Saudi oil and if being a politician is about anything, it's about votes. So, I don't see how it's possible to separate the two. That said, I don't think that is specifically what the movie is about, certainly not from a story perspective. The STORY is about a kid that likes to party and have a good time, doesn't quite live up to his father's expectations, is found by a guy (Rove) that thinks he's likable enough to get elected to small office, but then has higher aspirations to win the approval of dad. Unfortunately for him (and us) he's a bit of a dope that is easily manipulated by others and never quite understands the power he thinks he has. THAT is what the story in the film is regardless of it's factual nature. Agreed. Other than the wealth and privilege, he is a pretty normal schmuck. He got marketed and sold like a can of peas or a pack of cigarettes. Too bad he didn't possess the intellect, or even the vocabulary, to play the part successfully.
