  1. Reads like a description of my last 2 summers. Usually pretty good, occassionally crisp, once or twice per year - BRUTAL! Getting a modified slider put on now. 2. Not sure the question is stated as intended. An object inside a nuetron star, measuring 1" square, takes up 1" square of space inside the nuetron star. Maybe what was meant was how an object 1" square when outside a nuetron star can take up less space when moved into the center of the nuetron star? I'd agree that a given object of perceived fixed size moving fast enough to experience time dilation undergoes a change in volume and mass; but a static object (experiencing no acceleration in any dimension takes up exactly the volume of space that it possesses itself. I'm open to hearing differently, but would like to know the mechanics involved in a static object taking up less space than it's own volume. 3. I'm sure God could make cool patterns out of a pile of iron filings, . . . if he wanted to. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  4. If you like those guys, check out The Amazing Randy, a guy named Gardner (I only know him from his gatherings, which are called Gathering for Gardner), or some of the forums at badastronomy.com. (They debunk all the silly beliefs people have about stuff related to astronomy, physics, space, time, Life the Universe & Everything; but will take on just about anything). 5. That would certainly explain the dramatic changes in weather that can occur within hours, . . . or minutes. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  6. Put me down for 1 case of Pope on a Rope. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  7. No moral values - I'd probably love it. Yes, someone attach it if available. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. Except they don't need keys or anything like that to have sex. They are going to have it when they want to, whether they are supplied with BC or not. Parents really have very little control over when and with who their offspring go carnal. (Other than the values and priorities instilled, and that needs to happen way way way before they ever get to that decision point). A better analogy to BC would be seat belts and airbags. Would you remove the seat belts and airbags in order to prevent them from driving? Especially knowing that if they want to drive, they are going to do it without the seat belts and airbags? 9. Some misleading info there; not too mention unsubstantiated claims and hyperbole. There are companies of varying degrees of competence in any industry. An insurer of health care financing that acts for the good of all does not have denying claims and refusing coverage as their goal. In fact, quire the opposite. But the problem is the cost of care versus the willingness to pay. We could cover all bills, but somebody has got to pay. In the long run this issue is about how to cover all the costs. The amount all parties are willing to contribute (in total) does not cover the total cost of care. Therein lies the dilemma. Good companies keep trying to find ways to reconcile the difference. Bad companies keep trying to "win" the biggest piece of the pie for themselves. Being close to the business I can assure people of this: There is far more fraud (outright conspiracy to cheat and steal) from the provider end of the health care business than from the insurers. 10. I'm an advocate for tax shelters for the poor. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  11. Good to see that an aging homosexual atheist married for the 3rd time has very little chance of getting a majority of the popular vote. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  12. Worse, the gnome was atheist. I vote for the separation of Church and Gnomes. No, I mean Church and Atheists. My last vote, . . . for now. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  13. Naw, I haven't done any sports since 7th grade, I only really had one friend that was into sports in highschool, and he is crazy spiritual/vegetarian now. I vote for the separation of Church and Vegetables, or maybe it's Sports and Vegetables? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  14. I vote for the seperation of Church and Sports I vote for separation of Church and Sex. No more "Oh my God!" " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  15. Ha! I'm still jumping a Naro (from PISA) and have forgotten it's DOM - but it is old. I'm perfectly comfortable with it just based on what I perceive as it's very good condition; and much more importantly, my rigger's opinion. It's essentially a knock-off, and I just make sure to keep the velcro clean. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  16. Yes, thank you, that's it. Sometimes I just want to spew out an opinion, and do not want to be misunderstood as to be replying to a specific post. I've noticed some sites have a button at the end of the thread (as well as at the bottom of each page) that just says "Quick Reply" with a text box under it. You just type away in the box, then hit Quick Reply. The result is a post without reference to any other post. I think that would be good here too. 17. They are gonna rule the day eventually. It will come to pass in increments and over time, and probably without there being a recognizable watershed moment that everyone can point to and say "That is the event that moved China into world superpower #1 status." But it is going to happen eventually. It may happen only as a matter of economic weight, simply because the world is becoming more like a game of Monopoly than a game of Chess, but I think it will happen. The only way we could stop it (and not saying we should stop it) is if we intervened militarily, and I do not see that happening. It occurs to me that the mid-term future, from a very high altitude perspective, is easy to see. The blips in the short-term are tough to predict, but usually of relatively minor significance. A regional conflict here, maybe a nuclear event there. Nothing that is going to seriously alter the juggernaut that is the momentum of world history. And the really long term way out there stuff is of course going to be less accurate. But mid-term, say the next 15 to 100 years, not too tough. Kinda like a really big boat on the water. Very few individual waves matter, momentum precludes radical course changes, but no way to be sure what will happen way out there. But you can be pretty sure of the direction and where you are very likely to be over the next few boatlengths into the trip. Finished spewing. 18. This site needs a Quick Reply button that allows a person to post without replying to or quoting someone else. In answer to the OP - as with guns, snowmobiles, fast cars, chain saws, and a boatload of other things - it depends on the user. Religion appears to be pretty benign for the most part; with a relatively small number of people using it to rationalize the harm they are causing. The problem is the seriousness of the consequences for those doing the harm. And I'm not so sure they wouldn't be hurtful people even if they didn't have religion as a justification. They could just be nasty people who would rationalize it some other way. I mean, it isn't the religion doing the harming, it is the fucktard with the roadside bomb. (My first use of fucktard. I'll buy beer when the DZ opens in April - which means I'll bring a case for me and the 1st residents to drink before everybody else shows up after May 1st). 21. Thats over in 8 days. That is an urban myth that goes around every once in a while. That site is most likely a hoax. You do not need to add your cell numbers to any do not call list. In fact, you may be doing more harm than good by registering at such places. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  22. You do realize this will get you, once again, labeled as a Neo-con at best, a Nazi at worst. And that's another thing. How come you always get to be the Nazi? And why do we limit ourselves to such a narrow range of put-downs? Conquistadors brutally murdered a lot of people for equally invalid reasons. Why can't we be Conquistadors instead of Nazis? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  23. CT's have a humongous blind spot to anything that contradicts their desired belief. And a huge gaping hole in their judgement that allows absolute garbage in if it supports their desired belief. They basically have the whole critical thinking thing backwards, or sideways at best. Their criteria for credibility is whether or not they like the evidence. Any evidence they do not like is automatically part of the conspiracy. It's an airtight system. Hard evidence is not their criteria for belief. Desire is their criteira for belief. Look at the whole crop circles fiasco. Even after hooligans admitted to creating them (including those that were supposedly proven to be of alien making) the true believers still won't budge. They just keep repeating tired old ages ago debunked references about how the circles show features like nothing else on Earth. So much BS. 25. It's situational ethics. The only kind of ethics practiced by today's governments. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
