  1. Depends on the chicken. I know at least some can fly. The big fat white ones that end up in the grocery store though, I think the best they can do is glide/flop about just enough to keep from crashing too hard. It would be more interesting to see it in freefall on it's own that being dragged thru the sky on a tether. What is the point of that? Might as well drag a plush toy chicken on a tether. Or maybe a student. I don't think chickens contemplate their own (or anything else's) mortality, but they do practice avoidance behavior; so there is some crude form of learning going on. And they can obviously feel pain. So make that 5 or 6 brain cells instead of 3. And I would not serve asparagus with chicken. I wouldn't serve it with anything at all. Anything that has to be drenched in butter and herbs and spices in order to be palatable should be left off the menu. I've had that conversation with friends about escargot. They say they love it. I say that is only because it is drowned in butter, garlic, salt, pepper, etc. Go ahead and just yank one out of the shell and eat it. I bet if I took a piece of old gum out from under my desk and gave it the typical escargot treratment they would like it just the same. 2. Well, since they technically do not have status as a state, and the organizing of the people of that "community" has absolutely sucked since I can remember (let's not forget that Yessir Yourafart sponsored terorism too); in my opinion it disintegrated long ago. The disintegration started the day the Western powers drew some arbitrary lines in the sand and said "Here, you can have this. We don't think the current occupants will mind." Or something to that effect. An attempt to make everything good for all the nasty stuff that Nazi leader did. Everybody happy right, except those Palestinians, but who gives a shit about them right? Then oil became REALLY important and suddenly having the bulk of the Middle East pissed off wasn't looking like such a good strategy. So take a step back, regroup, install a few puppets, get in bed nice and snuggly with the people with the most oil (House of Saud) and, . . . Voila! All fixed. Then it turns out they are the source of huge terrorist money - not to mention the cradle of radical Islam. Fucked up again! This world domination game is so much tougher than it looks. 3. IMO, the problem in running for President has two interlinked factors. First, we're a voyeristic nation, in which the masses thrive on learning about other people's dirty laundry,... especially if it belongs to someone noteworthy. Secondly, the game of politics has become particularly nasty, effectively compelling many ambitious politicians to cater to my first point. Therefore, national candidates need a particularly thick skin and a willingness to expose their families also to abuse, if they want to play for the top spot. Oh yeah - there's that whole nasty business of funding your campaign, too. Heartily agree. I will add to my pathetically cynical outlook on US politics that I think there is one person that could be really different (of all those with intentions to run so far). The more I learn about Mr. Obama, the more I like him. Since this place seems populated mostly by people leaning way over to one side or another, I'll probably get skewered for that. Oh well, seems like everybody takes their turn. 4. Excellent example. If the recipe calls for 12 ounces of water and all you have are a set of measuring spoons you best know how many spoons of either size to an ounce...or to a cup if you know the conversion factor for that. Of course there is always Grandma who would SHOOT anyone who dared use a measuring device for cooking! How would that be different than working with a recipe that called for 500ml of water and all you had was a 2ml eyedropper? Either way, you are going to toss the measuring spoon or eyedropper aside and eyeball it. And maybe become a better cook for it. 5. I think they were saying they would establish a standard for the kilo as measured in atoms of silicon, which should all have the same mass - measured in electron volts. Right? So it makes many things much easier, except for the explaining how it makes things easier? 6. That saying has always bothered me. (I bother easy). And now I know who to blame. I think it is supposed to be a way of saying 2 things are the same. But with "other" tacked on the end, it really is not saying that. For example, if I have six of one (let's say 6 chickens), and I have half dozen of the other (let's say 6 cows - but anything "other" than chickens will do), then I DO NOT have the same thing in both counts. The saying should be more like 6 of 1 or a half dozen of the SAME. And THAT is what's wrong with metric. 7. If you need a calculator to find out how many inches are in 4.5', you probably should not be building anything. Though I must say, for the most part, I measure the opening, mark the wood, and cut it. Very seldom do I need to do a lot arithmetic, and most of it can be very easily done in the head. I think this would hold true in either system. 8. That's good, never thought of that. So are building materials and standards totally different in Europe? Are studs not 16" on center? Are insulation batts of a different width? Do they not use 8' 2X4's when framing up a wall? That must suck. 9. I find it fascinating that the first known civilization set the basic units for measuring the divisions of a circle (and the resultant divisions of time), that are still with us today. Called sexsidecimal I think? Or something like that. Even sounds cool. 10. Why would you need to know this? Spend a lot of time comparing a few millimeters to thousands of kilometers? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  11. Might as well get used to it. Until we undergo a cultural change we are not going to see another leader worthy of the office. The last incorrupt person to hold the office was Mr. Carter; but the public and media are ruthless, even going after him just for saying he had lust for beautiful women. Sorry if this is shocking news to anybody, but if a person is male and not gay - they have lust for women (maybe even ones not all that beautiful; i.e. - Clinton/Lewinsky). Bit I digress. Our hypocritical standards gotta scare all the good people, and the game has evolved to the point of attracting mostly unprincipled scum that practice situational ethics. We have a great country, why do we keep playing stupid childish games in the process of picking people to administer it for us? 12. Good point. I will be very disappointed if she wins office, but I won't be going anywhere. Even with our worst bleeding heart, hairshirt, tax & spend lefty in the Oval Office; it's still the best show in town. (In the 200 million and over weight class anyway). 13. Now that one finally got me to think outside the box. My new dream ticket: Captain Crunch for President. Tony the Tiger would make a GGGRRRRRRREAT running mate. 14. While children being the victims certainly makes this kind of act especially repugnant, my opinion is that all predatory crimes are deserving of much more serious penalty. Moments of passion, accidental death, even carelessness and negligence are all very different than the predatory characteristic of someone who goes out intentionally looking to hurt others - kids or adults. People who prey on others as a matter of lifestyle are THE scum of the Earth. How in the world can you realistically protect yourself against someone that has targeted you and could take the next step at any unsuspecting moment. Predators are not worthy of societies favors, including being fed and housed. I would consider capital punishment of sexual predators/murderous predators as a good start in the right direction though.
