1st downsize from student canopy?
pirana replied to baseknut's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Let's see: 288 sq ft / 225 lbs = 1.28 215 sq ft / 215 lbs = 1.00 150 sq ft / 210 lbs = 0.71 That does seem odd, doesn't it? How about this: 225 lbs / 288 sq ft = .078 215 lbs / 215 sq ft = 1.00 (That one is the same!) 210 lbs / 150 sq ft = 1.40 Crikey! I better upsize. 1st downsize from student canopy?
pirana replied to baseknut's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Jumps 1 - 30, Manta 288, WL 1.3 Jumps 30 - 70, Fury 220(?), WL 1.0 Jumps 70 - 300, Falcon 215, WL 1.0 I stayed with the Falcon for a while because I was not jumping enough to think about going smaller. When the frequency of my jumps got up there (back to at least a few jumps each week) I started transitioning down by jumping a variety of DZ canopies, working down to a 170 over about 30 jumps. A couple jumps on 190's with no significant difference. The 170 did get my attention, and I put about 25 jumps on it. Jumps 330 - 530, Sabre 150, WL .7 Very happy with this setup now that I have the opening speed slowed down. I do have a Stilleto 135 in the locker. Not sure if I will ever use it. I'd add one more bit to the topic. Careful with throwing too many transitions at your brain at one time. I went from SOS student gear to BOC rental to legstrap borrowwed (Fury) and back to BOC. I had no incidents, but knowing what I know now - I do not think that was very wise. The 2003 war in Iraq - does anybody still fully support it?
pirana replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
Just to be clear - I'm not defending him (Powell), just explaining his behaviors. He has repeatedly over the course of his career compromised his integrity in the belief that he could eventually steer things in a different direction. (At least I thought I was responding to comments about Powell). The Prez, he's just plain incompetent - which should be no surprise to anyone. He's just the figurehead for a power structure. He belongs behind a pulpit in some Baptist chuch more than he belongs behind a desk in the Oval Office. Right, it just means you have to guess your best about when they lie versus when they are telling the truth. Once their credibility reaches that low level, they really should be removed from any position of authority. Unfortunately, that is not how our political process works. typical of your strances.. rather than seeing the facts.. Apologist central is set in motion and attacks the source and the poster.. yet again.. I expected nothing less.. The FACT is... he is what he is.... a long record of being a yes man for political gain.. stepping over far more qualified superiors because of his Right Wing connections with your favorite NEO-CONS.... they made him.. used him.. and therw him away when he stopped being their YES MAN.. Typically disgusting He did what he thought he had to do to stay in the game. He didn't agree with the tactics, but saw staying in the game as a way to maybe eventually get the chance to make things right. Not apologizing for him, just acknowledging his tactics (which in the long run were maybe no better than those he was constantly fighting with in the administration). The 2003 war in Iraq - does anybody still fully support it?
pirana replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
Exactly. The difference is, in this day and age the sensible majority of Christians (along with a little assistance from we pagans) keep the radical right Christians in line. They occasionally try to rewrite some textbooks, or open museums that claim the dinosaurs cohabitated with humans at the beginning of Earth history (a mere 6K years ago); but aside from the relatively recent few slayings of civil rights workers, they have been kept in check. Islam has a problem in that they can not control their radical elements. Too many of them seem to refuse to assist in protecting the rest of the world from the extremists at the radical fringe of their belief system. This is further complicated by the fact that the revisionist interpretation that spawned the radicalism came from and is still staunchly supported by none other than our closest bedfellows in the region - the Saudis. Mix in a little of us sticking our nose in other people's business out of our own self interest making us a very appetizing target of opportunity and VOILA! Recipe for disaster. Very good post. I hope people don't miss the point that the fundamental conflict that must be resolved for an effective solution to be found is the conflict within Islam - not the fact that some of the combatants in that conflict see lashing out at the West as a viable tactic in the battle. (And I'm not saying we should ignore that tactic - we certainly need to protect ourselves - but the former must be resolved before we can expect lasting relief from the later). [reply>If I create a thread and give my thesis on quantum physics actually >being a theory of mashmellows and hot chocolate are people not allowed >to say I am 'ignorant of quantum physics'? Nope. They can say your theory is wrong (i.e. attacking your idea.) Personally I'd just think it was funny. But they can't say YOU are ignorant. Is a "mashmellow" New Englandese for marshmallow? And wouldn't this be more an example of Brownian motion (the mashmellows melting and mixing with the hot chocolate) than quantum mechanics)? I'm going with 5 years because that is the year (2012) when the whole Mayan-calendar-end-of-the-world goofiness is going play itself out, . . . or not. Every woo-woo nutcase in the world is going to focus on that year because of 1) popular misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar, and 2) the fact that said crowd will glom onto any end of the world scenario like this like bugs to a an open flame. We can probably count on the mainstream media to fan the flames more than we can count on them to distribute solid information. I've already seen some BS on the psuedo-science channels. For all the wackos that believe the world will end, please send me all your money, cars, guns, skydiving gear, and other portable miscellaneous goodies. You will not need them right? I don't believe in magic. I do believe in God, however, mainly because the evidence of designed creation screams it. Just like I believe a painter had to exist for there to be a painting or a builder had to exist for there to be a building. You, on the other hand, have to believe that something came from nothing, exploded, and became an organized everything. That seems unreasonable. Psalm 14:1-3 It only takes a beginner's knowledge of logic to see the flaws in that post. I am pretty sure you have that level of understanding. So it begs the issue of your being so blinded by your faith as to not trust your actual knowledge. The 2003 war in Iraq - does anybody still fully support it?
pirana replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
Obviously somebody does, but I don't now and never did. I remember being totally appalled when it became apparent that this administration was determined to attack. Talk about blatantly going after a target of opportunity. There is no graceful exit now. To think that we can impose a peace on that situation is ludicrous. However long we stay, the day we leave, the place comes apart like a deck of cards in a tornado. That will be the ultimate moment of shame for this administration as they ponder the cost and the wasted lives. Thing is though, somewhere in their twisted little imperialistic brains they will probably convince themselves it was worth it. There may be one possible effective ending - partition. The silly random lines drawn in the sand by the imperial powers did not take into consideration the needs of anybody but said imperial powers. But then again, how do you undo that given that now the local powers that be have vested interests and could probably never come to agreement even amongst themselves? Which comes full circle to the fundamental issue of the conflicts within the region, and within Islam, even if we had never went there. I do believe the situation may have progressed to the point where there truly is no effective solution. That sometimes happens when you make a big enough initial mistake and allow it to propogate for too long. Libertarian here, and I am good with cops; as much as I am good with anybody else. There are a few bad apples no doubt, but that's true of any profession. How could anybody but a hard core anarchist have a dislike for somebody solely based on the fact that the person is a cop? That was a great series. I only wished they had covered more of the history of the Middle East leading up to today's conflicts; especially focusing on the fact that the biggest conflict, and really the root of it all, is the conflict within Islam itself. It would have been very enlightening primarily because more people, even the ones who seem to think it is as simple as "because they hate us" would probably be willing to watch it than read about it. The 26 most common climate myths and misconceptions
pirana replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
So, according to your myth, there is never 12 hr. of darkness that prevents the heat from building up. And your house has no windows or doors which can be opened to allow the heat to dissapate. Maybe there's just someone with a victim's mentality living in the house who just sits there and says,"Damn, it's getting hot in here." Those are static factors and do not influence the validity of the analogy or related modeling. Many States Trying to enact Law to Skirt the Electoral College
pirana replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
No, what that means is that Los Angeles, New York and Chicago would be voting in the President every election, regardless of what the rest of the country might want. But with approximate proportional representation of the population via the number of electoral votes alloted by state, having an electoral college does nothing to stop the influence of large population centers.
