    BASE PARTY IN COLORADO!

UPDATE: The party at Shotgun Willie's was a fucking BLAST! A ton of people showed up, RADIX was in full effect thanks to Jimmy H., we had people bringing in their own footage/edits as well. As we predicted, the BASE videos were watched, but were generally pretty hard to see through the sea of tight young nubile dancers with rock hard nips showcased by the latest fasions in cheap stripper evening wear. Have to give props to the SW staff, who treated the jumpers VERY well, throwing in prizes for all, not limited to multiple lap-dances for the crowd, Go Fast schwag, etc! A HUGE round of applause to Rick and Trish, whose generosity helped make the night even more memorable! I now know that it is actually possible to hold yourself upside-down on a brass pole with JUST your ass-cheeks. These girls are TALENTED! You never know when that might come in handy at an exit point! I hope to never have to learn that skill, but was more than happy to see it demonstrated! It's official--it's an annual event...mark your calendars boys and girls--you'll have to fly out for it next year!!! Thanks to everyone who came out and/or supported the event!!
  2. how about turning that switch past "camera" to "memory?"
  3. I'd most likely get one of those super low profile digital FM radios and mount it to your helmet, then transmit to it wirelessly from my iPod with an iTrip or similar device. No Wires, Make a clear pocket on your thigh for the iPod so you can access the controls, and you're set. I've carved out places in my helmet foam for earphones before--works well, especially in a Nvertigo or a hurricane.

    BASE PARTY IN COLORADO!

***UPDATE*** thanks to Jimmy H, we have now secured a copy of RADIX to show at the titty bar er, I mean Gentleman's Club! And a reminder to the ladies: there is a veritable ARMY of chicks coming to Shotgun Willie's for the event--don't be shy! It's FAMILY NIGHT at the bar! (as long as your family is of legal drinking age). By the Way Jimmy--again, GREAT fuckin' job on RADIX! You people have to see this flick!!!! see you there, pope
  5. 3 words for you: FINAL CUT PRO[/B] pope
  6. are these hot, colored smokes then all electrically activated? Are they the ones that come in a shiny silver finish canister about 10" tall w/ 2 small wires coming out the top? What do they cost? I need a bunch. I'm assuming something as small as a 9v battery can activate these. Does anyone have any advice on building a switch? pope
  7. What is the Best (most dense) type of colored smoke canisters available? at least 2-3 min burning time preferably. What have people used in the past for freefall? I have seen some really dense orange smoke, which held up well in freefall and on a wingsuit pilot, but I'm looking for reds, blues, yellows, greens, etc. Any suggestions? pope
  8. use sony tapes, as well--not the shitty fuji, maxell, etc...
  9. I disagree. It's not hard to know the orientation you will be flying in relative to your subject. All it takes is a small piece of gaffer's tape and a quick glance at the position of the sun when you get on the plane. If you're fortunate enough to have a subject that is "sun aware," it makes it even easier. Circ. Polarizers are a good freakin' thing. pope
  10. can you get any info on the new sony HDV 3CCD's? cheers. pope
  11. If you haven't ordered it yet, I'd hold off another couple of weeks--MacWorld I believe is next weekend--The prices are sure to drop! **crossing fingers that there is a G5 laptop coming out.... pope BTW, you can get good FW400 drives now for less that a buck/Gb shipped these days. If you're doing any editing I'd recommend one HIGHLY.
  12. Does that mean everyone who gets in a car with me can also get a ticket for "conspiracy to drive over the speed limit?" But "they" have to be able to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" your INTENT, don't they? Having an unpacked rig in the car when you drive through the valley isn't a crime, is it? Which begs another question for you lawyer types: hypothetical situation: I make an illegal BASE jump. I land, take whatever evasive actions are necessary, and make it to the vehicle with my gear undetected. As I'm driving away from the area, at some point I get pulled over. The [ahem] "law enforcement" officer asks if I've seen any BASE jumps/parachutes/whatever, and let's say somehow ends up searching my car. As I get out of the car I'm thinking "great--there goes my gear...he's SURE to find a full stash bag in the car!" What are my rights here? Firstly, it's always seemed to me that if there was a witness to an "illegal" BASE jump, then there would be some beta on the canopy color, right? So is there any way to ask the cop/ranger/MP/whatever specifically what he's looking for? "Oh--you're looking for a parachute, officer? What colors? It seems like if _before_ he searches your car, you can get him to be specific about what he's looking for, and he's wrong, (eg: he's looking for a blue and black canopy and the one in your car is red and black) then you're potentially off the hook when it goes to court-- Also--what are the laws concerning videoing your run-ins with police? Do they have to consent to being filmed or recorded? Could I just throw my camcorder on the dash and let it run, even if it's just for the audio? Would it be admissable in court as evidence when the ranger/cop/MP/whatever spews his bold-faced lies about me, the fine, upstanding citizen that I am??

  15. I have about 50 skydives and 4 or 5 BASE jumps on DVX100/100As, and I'll say this: The 24p CAN look great in freefall, but you need the right light conditions and need to fly ULTRA smoothly--I've tried both with and without IS, and this camera definately shoots better WITHOUT stabilization. Also, I'd be particularly careful how you mount it--I recommend using a secondary strap in addition to the 1/4-20 mount at a minimum. Good Luck

    Camera Helmets

There are virtually no skydiving helmets on the market that offer any "real" head protection--ie: distributing the force applied to the shell in a "critical impact" situation to the helmet instead of the head/brain. To date, the closest you'll find is a ProTec. Far and away the best helmet for head protection COMMONLY used in skydiving/BASE. Carbon Fiber, Kevlar, etc. Doesn't mean SHIT. It's the LINER that makes a helmet good, not the shell. If you're concerned with a high-quality helmet from a PROTECTION standpoint, I'd get a protec and build a camera helmet out of it. Otherwise, I'd look into the MTB/Ski/Snowboard/MX markets to try and adapt something there. If you don't mind the size, look into adapting a full-face MX/MTB helmet that is DOT or SNELL rated to work for jumping. In short, ProTec is still the best compromise for your dollar or pound or Euro or whatever). pope
  17. I've never heard of a PC-6. Are you certain it's not just a PC 9 turned upside-down??
  18. I love mine! Great fit, Easy to mount. Reasonably priced and great customer service! Good choice. pope
  19. Unless you skydive professionally, that is...I'm pretty current, but I have no health isurance--partly because I can't afford it, partly because no-one will cover my pre-existing conditions. What I need is to find a group plan to join. I wonder if a large group of uninsured skydivers got together if it's possible to get a group plan?? Any insurance experts out there?

    Shooting BASE Video

Those two cameras (particularly the 100) are notorius for doing that. You should be safe with just about any new Sony camera.
  21. No thans Mary-- I have that one already. But anything (still OR video) from the old Love/Ft. Coll days would be grrreat! pope
