I believe the "worst" would have to be a PC in tow. My emergency proceedures for a horseshoe include clearing the PC from the pouch or other source of entanglement before cutting away or deploying the reserve (if you don't, then I certainly change my vote to an UNCLEARED horseshoe mal). pope

Who is the "Warren Miller" of Skydiving?
pope replied to JoeG's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
point taken, and agreed--but reading between the lines of the question was where I got the question that I answered. Thankfully, Warren Miller is DONE with his cheesy voice over work. I'm pretty sure that the only reason he stuck around so long in the first place was tradition, anyhow. I disagree though about WM making our sports palatable to the general populace--I think it just needs to be done a bit more creatively. That being said, that's not always so easy to do in the film industry, unless you happen to be independantly wealthy and willing to take a huge loss on your jumping film... someday it will happen the RIGHT way, though... pope -
is there a landing area for the Cliffs of M**** near "our lady of the Phonebooth?" (other than the obvious water landing, that is...) cheers, pope email: chris AT triaxproductions DOT com

Who is the "Warren Miller" of Skydiving?
pope replied to JoeG's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
my votes go to: Carl Boenish (BSBD) Jennings Passe based on abilities as shooters and their eye for composition/production. pope edit: spelling -
I disagree. I've seen bad shit just happen. The systems we use are just so complex and chaotic that we just can't control everything. You'll have a hard time convincing me that most BASE jumpers can't control whether they walk away from a jump or not when it's not right. Remember--It's always YOUR choice to leave an exit point. Which direction you leave is also up to you. There is usually a short way to the bar and a longer way to the bar. Pity to go in strictly because you were too lazy to hike down in the wrong conditions and chose to jump instead, wouldn't it? I'm of the opinion that if you EVER decide to walk down, you've made the right choice. .02 pope

Embarassment at April 2005 Parachutist Cover
pope replied to anonymouscwrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
[reply Perhaps that IS what is embarrassing. That the USPA should put the wrong year on its glossy magazine cover is pretty embarrassing. has anyone ever heard the phrase "April fools??" -
not a BASE jump. It was a skydive. He never released his main, right? Keep him off the list, he got out of a plane. pope

Jason/Spizz: Have you guys discovered the wonders of Email yet? It's pretty cool--you can carry on conversations without everyone on the board reading them! You can even talk shit about me without me knowing! J: You should mention the pond swooping req's as well! Steve: Get your priorities straight man--1. BASE 2. swoop 3. reuinion. Oh, and I think I'm the favorite for the first for water--CHOW. I'm guessing that the first D-W-D candidate won't be from Colorado!!

If you're using your camera for anything outside of the dz, Get away from using on-camera effects. They can be done with much more control and with higher quality on a NLE system (or most decent linear editing systems, for that matter). That being said, it always helps to have a couple seconds of lead in/lead out video on each side of a clip for easier captures and better transitions. So in short, skip a new camera if you have one that works well for you now.

Make sure in the future that if *whatever* video guy you have wants to "play around," he should do it on a different jump than an AFF. Hopefully he/she is actually qualified to jump with AFF students. pope

I'd like some help with my mac and iMovie...
pope replied to Superfletch's topic in Photography and Video
You'd be doing well to upgrade to a dual processor, to be sure. iMovie will suit your needs well for now, but I recommend FCE as an intermediate step to "real" non-linear editing on a mac. When your comfy enough, you'll want to invest in a beefy dual G5 and Final Cut 5 or whatever version is the most current at the time (look into Apple's "production Suite" when you upgrade--FCP, DVDSP, and Motion). You'll want to get another couple of storage drives as well, unless you'll be purging all raw captured footy off of your machine after each edit. 120GB doesn't go far in NLE systems! I'd look into a Serial ATA RAID card and the largest drives it will support. if your computer supports it. I believe Acard makes one that will suit your needs. Either way, don't get suckered into an external irewire Drive unless you absolutely need it--way slower. If you do end up with an Ext. FW drive, at least try and go with FW800 instead of FW400 (if your machine supports it. And even then don't edit straight from the FW drive--only use it for backups. As far as books go, the "For Dummies" series has always been a great first book for mac products. Surf the user groups at Apple.com/support--they will help you immensely. The bottom line is that if you want to learn the program(s), you gotta put in the time! So I definately recommend buying a case or two of Go Fast! right off the bat. Good luck making your tandem vids on a NLE system in less time than the standard linear edit. Have fun! pope -
