  1. What I really hate is people who smoke just before they get in the plane. I am stuck smelling it for twenty minutes.
  2. I really think religion is foolishness. That said I have many friends and family who are religious so I try not to ridicule them openly. If someone is pushy I just try to be polite. If I behaved any different I would be heavily discriminated against in this town. The truth is it doesn't come up that often.
  3. Well. I believe that flying into buildings and powerlines for example, have a much higher chance of killing a student than landing in a turn. That said i do spend a fair bit of energy teaching how to conduct an emergency, low level turn. There are no purely correct answers here and we tend to hate gray areas in the first jump course, but I feel that this is the best short and long term advice I can give.
  4. Actually I was doing that in Eloy a couple of Decembers ago and got told in no uncertain terms how uncool that was.
  5. Landing Priorities as specified in our FJC: 1. Avoid other canopies. 2. Avoid obstacles. 3. Land going in a straight line. 4. Land into wind 5. Land in the designated area. These were lifted wholesale from the British Army Parachute Association's FJC.
  6. It is rarely above freezing at altitude here in Alberta. If it is colder than -10C I don't like jumping in sandals. below -20 I don't like jumping at all. That is like a cold day in Eloy, DAMN COLD!
  7. Damn! And you guys think we're repressed with our gun registry.
  8. No doubt that is true. Been there done that. Kamloops May meet 2002. On a later load Dick Cheney wandered out of the terminal and the airspace slammed shut for twenty minutes after they had depressurised the plane at 17,500. Thirty five very stupid, rather blue skydivers spread themselves all over the Thompson Valley when it reopened. Fortunately no one was hurt, but a few jumpers didn't recover enough to jump again for the rest of the boogie.
  9. I teach them to walk the lines. However the OP has physical problems walking the lines. If you and I are smart enough to do it, probably he is too.
  10. I think the mods generally keep the incidents forum to the rules. I do wish they were more vigilant at removing the condolence posts rather than posting a reminder. As far as no speculating, I disagree. John's rant about people asking what kind of helmet they were wearing makes no sense to me. First of all asking for info is not speculation, it is gathering info. Secondly his claim that we all know that wearing a better helmet would have helped, and doesn't need repeating is flat out wrong. One constant I have found over the years is that most things relating to safety need to be repeated (yes I am that guy on the DZ who constantly tells the newer jumpers why they shouldn't do that shit). We recently buried a friend who we forgot to repeat the warnings about towing a canopy behind a truck. It had been too long and I guess those of us who remember just assumed that everyone knew that and it didn't bear repeating. We were wrong.
  11. My advice is to take the coach course and not the other two. Spend a year as a coach and decide whether you will get out of the other ratings enough to make it worth the price of the added pressure on your rec time. As others have said, this depends a lot on your DZ and DZO.
  12. The trouble all began when we dropped it from age 35.
  13. Still waiting on real examples of the harm all these black eyes have caused....... OK here is an example. A student died at a dropzone a few years ago. The government called an inquiry and the DZO challenged it saying the provincial government had no authority as aviation is federal. He had made the same claim years ago and had lost. He lost again, but in doing so the press really painted him as an asshole (rightly or wrongly). By the time the inquiry was held he had sold the drop zone and so had no interest in the outcome. He therefore did very little to defend his position. As a result the judge (retired) presiding made a series of recommendations based upon questionable information that was not refuted. The Canadian government is now making laws to govern skydiving using these recommendations as a justification.
  14. Add to that Christian and Jewish women also are productive.
  15. Ya the weather sucks here in October and I usually get less than half as many tandems as in September. I just told my boss I need twice as much per tandem. He is looking at me funny. Maybe we can double the price to the customers. Ya, that's the ticket.
  16. I havent seen any Hare Krisnas in years; I had almost forgotten about them. KRISNA KRISNA....HARE RAMA!!! If I ever join I want to play the finger cymbals.
  17. That would have been good in a "laugh track" kind of way. Given the readership of the New Yorker they probably wouldn't have thought it necessary. True, but since many think this cartoon was a shot at Obama, I think the attempt was a complete failure Many in the general population, but how many in their target audience? Just because it is a liberal mag doesn't mean they are in the stumping for the Dems business.
  18. Perhaps because those in his camp are more acutely aware than him of the perils of coming off as an intellectual elitist. If Obama says something that can be (mis)portrayed as, "no problem, those of us who are smart enough understood it," the Repubs win the round.
  19. That would have been good in a "laugh track" kind of way. Given the readership of the New Yorker they probably wouldn't have thought it necessary.
  20. I want someone who is much more than an eloquent speaker in the White House. I want someone who is much more than a junior senator from Illinois. I want someone who didn't get his start in Chicago politics. I want someone who didn't spend 20 years listening to a raving lunatic like the Reverend White. And the list keeps getting bigger every day. If we could arrange to shoot the other senator from Illinois, making Obama the senior, would that help? Are there any other cities that disqualify a candidate, or is Chicago the only one? What if he spent twenty years listening to Jerry Falwell and Rush Limbaugh? You really haven't given us anything of substance here.
  21. No. That's not the concern discussed in my circles. Obama has proven himself to be an eloquent speaker, who hits all the right notes. The White House is not a musical instrument, and the man is not fit to inhabit it, IMO. Okayy,...so you are concerned that he is an eloquent speaker, and you don't want an eloquent speaker in the White House? Not sure what the mag cover has to do with that.
