Both the Obama and McCain camps have condemned the NewYorker cover http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080715/world/obama_new_yorker as being offensive. I think it's sad that people in the public eye are not even allowed to acknowledge the existence of satire these days. The cover was good. It was an accurate (within the exaggerated bounds allowed by satire) depiction of the portrayal of Obama by the right. It was legitimate political commentary. Yes?

Liability as an Instructor - How to Minimize It?

Which is why CSPA does not offer instructors insurance but does offer them a legal defense fund. -
Oldest sport reserve still in production?
Andrewwhyte replied to riggerrob's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Is it the Vector tandem reserve? Whatever that model is. -
Some opinions please...
Andrewwhyte replied to SacrificialPawn's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Do the AFF. The satisfaction you will feel after level one will be so great you will wonder why you even considered another tandem. They will not teach you anything in Weston that you will have to "unlearn" in Spain. -
That sounds delicious!! Where do you get those noodles?? MMM jalapenos! Up here we get them at Safeway (I have to drive 40 miles to the nearest Safeway) but they are not $0.17.

I prefer NEOGURI Nong Shim noodles. Spicy seafood with fresh shrimp, tomatoes, garlic, jalapenos and a couple of eggs. Then add Parmesan.

You don't think the catholic authorities would limit freedom do you? Come on, that's crazy talk. -
If you are flat packing you do not need to walk the lines. Take the canopy and flake it using the packing tabs. If it has none a rigger can sew them on. Best to use an old rigger who remembers where they need to be located. If your lines are straight you should be able to do your line check from the harness end: select the outside line from the front and rear riser on the side that is on the top of the laid out canopy. Trace them through the slider, which should be just above the risers. Lift those two lines up until they lift the stabilizer on the appropriate end cell. Do the same with your steering lines. Return to the canopy end and proceed to pack.

Well, when you get to the party you look great and get the attention of the fellas. As the evening wears on and you (and the boys) get drunk, what you look like gets less and less important.

From the CSPA Chat list: Every once in awhile I stumble onto a treasure that delights me.... yesterday was such a day. What started out as a customer with an old pilot rig that needed to be repacked turned into something that should be in our national archives. For the more technically minded in our group: Out of an old Harvard, a seatpack made by Irvin Air Chute Ltd of Hamilton ON, as new, with patents listed ranging from 1922 to 1938. Container made of cotton with round bungees (POBs), harness made of cotton with 4 point QRB, cotton backpad filled with felt. Ripcords pins wound with copper wire and soldered (complete with corrosion from inadequate neutralizing -- apparently the standard of the day). Canopy was a 24' silk with silk A-1 'spider' pilot chute that wouldn't deploy. Last repacked Aug 1945. Cheers, al. Al MacDonald ownes and operates Flying High Manufacturing in Claresholm Alberta

Should the government (aka taxpayers) bail out Fannie and Freddie?
Andrewwhyte replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
If they do they should demand unescrowed equity in return. This will allow them to apply a stabilizing influence upon the market while holding the prospect of recouping at least some of the taxpayers' dollars. It also maintains to some degree the very necessary penalties on the investors that the market inflicts upon bad decision making. -
Yesterday we jumped in very strong, gusty winds all day. Eventually we were left with just the students. When the ground winds were down enough to drop them I found myself wishing for a WDI. We didn't have one around though, the DZO has never seen one.

Try it. You'll never go back. Hurry HARD!!! -
Hukabee is well spoken, articulate and generally likable. The big question is whether he will scare off more secular independents than he will coax conservative repubs back to the polls.

Liability as an Instructor - How to Minimize It?
Andrewwhyte replied to velvetjo's topic in Instructors
The arguments about whether a tandem or IAD student have placed higher expectations upon themselves seem right and true. Sadly our nations have armies of attorneys trained to thwart that sort of logic mumbo jumbo. The truth is IADs get dead at a higher rate than tandems and I think they get hurt at a much higher level. At the end of the day there is no defense like having your student waving goodbye with a big smile on his/her uninjured face. -
I stopped doing tandems in Tevas last year. I turned my ankle on the first jump of the day and left the dz in a bind. Another TM jumped the rest of the day to cover for me even though his back was killing him. I am pretty sure most other type of footwear would have lessened or even eliminated my injury, so I just don't do it any more. Damm I miss barefoot tandems on the beach in Cabo.

Don't look for much, he's not issued very many during his terms, and he's not likely to have a very long list. What about those two Border guards in Texas who shot the drug mule? Maybe? -
Liability as an Instructor - How to Minimize It?
Andrewwhyte replied to velvetjo's topic in Instructors
I feel I am way more exposed doing IADs than tandems. -
As a legal waiver it is likely not worth anything; as evidence of "informed consent" I think it is very valuable.

Yep, it's a brave new world on DZcom.

Do think a jump pilot has a reason to be angry when this happens?
Andrewwhyte replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
Further what Riggerrob said, I really think you need to review the process of turning yourself and the passenger while on your butt. Either turn on your knees or don't turn. Rob and I have done hundreds of tandems sharing a 182 and neither of us ever turn in the aircraft. From the sitting position/old man seat it is easy to lift your butt up to protect the drogue while you slide over to the right side, and then back to the doorway. It is a bit more work to get the passenger's first leg out, but I have managed with some pretty large people over the years.
