I saw this article, which quoted the FOP pres, and well, I'lll et you decide for yourselves. And when Joe and Jane Citizen are confronted with a situation to which they must react......what, use spit balls and harsh language? Also, as far as I know, officers are not sworn to protect the public across the nation. Generally, they swear to uphold the laws of their state and the constitution of the USA. There might be a clause for the citizens under their jurisdiction, but does anyone know of a department that swears to protect all citizens of the US? Officers in Mississippi or Georgia are no more sworn to protect my neighbor here in Birmingham, AL, than I am. I have one question. Why should cops be allowed to protect themselves when out of state, but not Joe or Jane citizen? Sure, cops have training. So do most CCW holders. Here's one issue: cops tend to want to do something, to "act," when faced with a situation. How long will it take before a cop acts, and because he did so without backup and the support network of a department, he acts wrongly? Any guesses on when the first wrongful shooting out of state by a cop will be? When cops take off the uniform and travel on their own time, what makes them different from you and me? Really, the qualification for many (all?) departments is so easy that the vast majority of CCW holders could pass. Maybe they should have to open their facilities to the public, and allow any citizens who pass to carry nationwide. That would sove complaints, right, because the only "difference" anyone has pointed out has been the recurring qualifications. If citizens pass the quals for their local PD, shouldn't they be allowed to carry, as well? Do you fear a hammer, just becuase someone can crush your skull with it in seconds if you're not careful? Do you fear a pen, just because if you slip you can cause sever disfigurement or death? I do, however, have a very healthy respect for the power and responsibility that comes everytime I ahndle a firearm. There are four very simple rules that help me do so. 1. Every gun is loaded. Everytime you put it down, somebody loads it when you're not looking. (check the chamber, everytime you pick it up) 2. Never point the firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. (if you don't point it at anything valuable, you can't shoot anything valuable) 3. Always be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Are you incapable of understanding that crime must be addressed in terms of trends, rahter than simple percentages from year to year? What has your crime rate been doing over the last ten years? How does requireing citiznes to give their name to a government bureacracy hope to affect violent crime? Are you talking about violent crime, involving guns? Are you talking about violent crime overall, which could be affected by guns? Or are you talking about the crime rate overall? If so, what does it say to you that the US has a far lower crime rate than the UK? Being denied the most effective means of self defense, and then thanking some faceless bureacrat for it, is a learned behavior. Apparently we're doing better on ours than you are on yours. Our crime rate, and just about every category thereof, has been steadily declining for years. What's yours been doing lately? Quote me one instance where John or anyone else supported giving guns or any other weapon to the mentally ill, adicts, or anyone else not in control of themselves? We want criminals punished and the ill healed as much or more than anyone else. In terms of denying a right, I'd define mentally ill as having been adjudicated unfit for trial, having been forcibly committed to a mental health ward, being unable to care for oneself, etc, until a physician with some form of accoutability says otherwise. If we go from the gun banners' interpretation, everyone from Abe Lincoln to Dr. MLK would've been classified as "mentally ill." ps - oh yeah, I'd add anyone who was found not guilty by reason of mental illness or defect in a criminal trial. Andy UK crime rates increased at a faster rate after their gun bans were introduced (thus failing to show any positive effect of gun control). Here in the US, the overall crime rate is dropping, and it is dropping faster in states that recognize the right to self defense (thereby showing positive effects of 'liberal' gun laws) Also, guns are far from unregulated. What other objects do you have to be approved by two federal agencies before you purchase them? What other object has so many law and regulations concerning it? So according to you, only cops and military should have guns. Uh huh. Why is that? You do know that, at least here in the US, cops have a higher crime rate than people who carry concealed, right? Also, you think that being tageted by a nut requires being famous? Why should people who can afford 24/7 bodyguards be the only ones who can protect themselves. If you want to play probabilities, no one in the US is likely to be a victim (overall likelihood of crime victimization is around 4%). If you realize a gun can be necessary to protect oneself (as you stated via acceptance of bodyguard carry), why deny it someone who wouldn't make as many headlines? Everyone from the Clinton Justice Department to unaffiliated researchers have found between 1.25 and 3.5 million Defensive Guns Uses each year here in the states.
