Yeah, I wrote them an e-mail asking how they came up with that number. Care to lay odds on whether I'll hear back or not? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/19/opinion/main788517.shtml The truth is just a weee bit different... http://www.saysuncle.com/archives/2005/08/20/higher_and_higher_the_numbers_climb/ Lets see if it is correct. Now to err on the side of caution I will use only the number 16.5 to get these numbers. Don’t want to be accused of inflating these would I? 16.5 dead x52 weeks a year equals 858 Damn. That’s a lot of dead people. Only problem is it is made up. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics only gives the number of 487. Slightly smaller then the 858 number. The problem is that 487 is even a slightly misleading number when the data is examined. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tried to use the 487 number in one of their anti-gun screeds but one of my commenters shot it down very fast. But its accuracy is irrelevant. Notice the editorial’s wording, "487 people were shot to death at work." That total apparently includes every police officer, cab driver, bank teller, pawnbroker and quicky-mart employee shot and killed "at work," whether the shooter was a fleeing criminal, disgruntled customer, armed robber — or someone in a more relevant category like “angry employee” or "fed-up manager."So the number CBS is giving out is bunko. But I will say now that I am not surprised at all. Robert B. Reich, the editorial author, is best described as biased. I was surprised when I found what position he held. http://www.robertreich.org/reich/biography.aspAs the nation’s 22nd Secretary of Labor, Reich presided over the implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Act; led a national fight against sweatshops in the U.S. and illegal child labor around the world; headed the administration’s successful effort to raise the minimum wage; secured worker’s pensions, and launched job-training programs, one-stop career centers, and school-to-work initiatives. Under his leadership, the Department of Labor earned more than 30 awards for innovation and government reinvention. A 1996 poll of cabinet experts conducted by the Hearst newspapers rated him the most effective cabinet secretary during the Clinton administration.I would think that a person who was in charge of the department of labor would have better numbers, or at least tell the truth. It's too bad they don't let the facts slow them down, otherwise we might actually make some progress. Does anyone else get sick of seeing patently absurd and completely false statements in the national media? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Reminds me of an old comment about airline hijackings. [this is paraphrased] Which do you think is more effective? Banning zippo lighters and nail clippers and searching 80 year old Texan medal of honor winners, or paying a little more attention to people who fit a profile (of which race, nationality, ancestry, religion and other things are a part)? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Terrify, sear So you think terrify means the same thing as terrorize, and sear means the same thing as cauterize? Not to self: never, ever, take english advice from kallend ever again I expected better from you, professor. terrify - to fill with fear, to frighten terrorize - to commit terrorist acts against, to coerce by violence or intimidation cauterize - to seal a wound with heat or cold, to make insensitive sear - to make hot and dry, to char a surface, so superficially burn, singe Just because you might use one word to replace another in one instance does not mean they are the same word and one is useless, reptitive, or redundant. And there's a perfect example, do you think useless, reptitive, and redundant all mean the same thing just because they can be used in the same situation? edit to add What are terrify, and quantify, other than "verbed nouns?" Are verbed nouns using IFY acceptable to you, but those using IZE are not? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1* -
All reviews point to it being fluff. (from those who love it and those who don't) It makes a happy little saint out of Che. Of course, some here believe that's what he was, but to the rest of us, it's about the same as Rush Limbaugh making a movie about Ronald Reagan. TO the believers it'd be wonderful, to most entertaining, and the rest it'd be blasphemy. I'm not spending one red cent on seeing it. If I have the chance to see it free, I might be willing to give up a few hours of my life, but just as likely I might not. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

About a tenth as many as it takes for a busybody conservative to learn that their morality shouldn't be imposed on everyone else. So some conservatives think they're on higher ground, so everyone should do as they say, and some liberals think they know better, so everyone should do as they say. Tell me again why one is better than the other? But of course the liberals must be smarter (they agree with you), so even though neither side will ever accpet it, the liberals will accept it sooner. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

You've been answered, but since you have ignored them for one reason or another, here we go again. To the framers, "well regulated" means in good working order. It does not mean there should be tens of thousands of regulations. Congress is granted the power to in Article 1, Section 8. Do you think they just forgot, or that they felt the need to repeat themselves that one time? Or do you think it more likely that you simply misunderstood the meaning of the words? Militia means all able bodied men of service age (18-45, give or take). Also, as has been explained in general, and to you specifically, the militia clause of the second amendment is a subjective clause. It by no means limits the entire amendment. It provides a reason, not a limitation. First, it would not be difficult to argue that an armed citizenry is still necessary to the security of a free state. Second, even if that were not true, SUBJECTIVE CLAUSE. Consider yourself answered, again. While I acknowledge the realities of the day, that doesn't make them more acceptable. The facts remain, whether they have been followed or not. Just because something is law, that doesn't mean it should stay law. Hence the lobbying, phone calls, letter writing, etc. If you think I don't know how anti-rights people argue, then (A) you've missed my warnings to blue-state-democrat voters than in supporting a person who is reading out one right, they are laying the ground work for reading out all our rights, and (B) you've never seen me debate for gun control. Pick up your jaw, yes, I argued for gun control once. It was for an project at UMCP. The assignment was to find someone we disagreed with strongly, and argue eachother's position before the class. The sad things is my opponent was weak and I won. Afterwards, when I explained to the class what I would've said that he didn't, and what he left out, suddenly they understood why I oppose people who would limit our rights. Jury, Witness, Soap, Ballot, Cartridge Do you know what those things are? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

And unlike what a lot of people are claiming, the Supreme Court HAS spoken on the second amendment, and found without exception that it recognizes an individual right. edit: Besides, the DOJ files amicus briefs in many Supreme Court and Circuit Court cases. They also need to understand the law as it is their job to enforce it. Before you knock the DOJ memo, go ahead and read it, then take a peak at the bibliography. It cites original writings, debate by the framers, and case law from Supreme Court. Hardly "revising" its meaning, don't you think? I'd say it's more like recognizing what it was always meant to say. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Border Patrol Agents Ordered To NOT Do Their Job
Kennedy replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
Personally I think any city that makes itself an "asylum city" ought to lose federal funding. "Yeah, sure City X, you can break federal laws, but good luck with your budget next year." Of course, if we're going to do that, we need a federal government that actually wants to DO something about our borders, and like the article points out, again, we haven't got one. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1* -

I know this would make me very unpopular in a lot of places, but I always wondered why we have so many bases in so many places. Really, are they all doing something that couldn't more efficiently be done somewhere else? (this obviously excludes any meant solely for physical defense, if we have any of those left) Does anyone other than locals and congressman want that many bases, forts, camps, grounds, etc? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I heard reports that the Koran that ended up in a toilet was put there by a muslim prisoner. Not exactly the same as being flushed by US forces, is it? Why not wait for some facts to come out before assuming that claims made by anti-us propagandists are true? Prisoners aren't exactly the most reliable sources, you know? You have to love that "sources tell newsweek" line. Sources from where? Al Jazeera? Until something of the email becomes public or some sort of findings are made, well... just call me doubting Thomas. ps - what's the proper way to spell it in English, "Koran" or "Qur'an" witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

That photo is enough for me to continue believing that a jet struck the pentagon. To anyone who's ever seen (or see video of) a missile strike, they don't tend to look like that. It generally just looks like a lot of dirt and whatnot is thrown around, and some waves that resemble heat mirage. You don't see a huge fireball unless they strike something that'll make one. A jet, on the other hand, carries tons of jet fuel, and very flammable substance. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Possums make a pissed off raccoon look like the neighborhood lab. They are some mean MFing SOBs, no two ways about it. I've also heard they make good stew. Here in this blue state, I have to be more stealthy about it. For my raccoon problem, a friend reccomended a paint ball gun with marbles or frozen paintballs, but I did one better (and didn't have to spend hundreds on a marker). I found some old marbles, a nice strap of rawhide, and two strips of rubber left over from who knows what, and a stout branch. I used a second story window for my stand and left the flood lights on all night, just waiting for some noise. The little bastard never had a chance. (next time I'll use the little ones first, not the shooter marble) I'm still considering a cheap bow or a integrally suppressed rifle in .357 or .44 magnum. Then I could deal with anything up to and including the starved deer in the evergreen farm next door, and no one would need to worry. (you don't know how tempting it is when I run through there in the morning and the deer don't even take off, they just stay huddled up) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
