How many people that really swoop, not double front speed induced landings, have not had a trip to the hospital? I have been around long enough to hear and see the saying "if your going to swoop you will hit the ground and let's hope you get broke not dead" so is it true or a myth? Well now, I think Skydive Deland has it figured out how to make Groupon work for them a lot better than many DZ's (which is not surprising.) Groupon says the jump is a $210 value, but the SDD web site lists prices as Tandem Skydive $179, Groups of 4 to 6 $165, Groups of 7 or more $155. And they are only discounting it 40%, not 50 or more like a lot of Groupon deals. If their Groupon customers figure that out they may not be happy, but it is an old marketing idea. Increase the normal price, they give a discount. So while they may not be making money, they might not be actually losing money like many drop zones are that use it. That's they deal with Groupon, you need to figure out if it can be used without losing money. The only surprising thing SDD did was to make the coupon good for a year. Does SDD have excess capability and need the extra customers? Groupon takes half so they are doing tandems for $62.50 Please tell me how you make money at $62.50? Do they always take half? Or can it be negotiated? Also, further upstream in this thread someone noticed it is not SDD, but some other company using SDD facilities. Now it really doesn't make sense. SDD might have excess capability to benefit [not lose their ass] with Groupon, but a smaller company would not. It's a crazy thing isn't it, this skydiving business? If you are a return customer I have heard of negotiated rates of 40% but nothing less. The major problem that people do not get is your eating your market. You get this huge influx of cash but a negative is a negative. You cannot sell anything at a loss and make up for it in volume. Only ones that have been able to capitalize on lost leaders have been the big stores like walmart. they will lose $2 on an item because you can't walk into walmart and not spend $100 and walmart sells CONSUMABLES. Also when your in walmart you see items that you will want to come back for thus buiding loyalty. Tandems are mostly a 1 and done. When you eat your market at a 50% loss you will soon not have any one left to pay full price. The same holds true for every buisness that uses Groupon. It is so sad that people cannot do simple basic math. I have so many customers around the country that are now facing shutting their doors because they felt they had to run a groupong because the guy across town ran one. Now everyone is working at a loss as they have no time for full paying customers and what was once a full paying customer now has a groupon in hand... And you would be wrong. Selling at a loss is a loss. You cannot make it up with volume. Your only regurgitating groupings rhetoric not reality. What really happens is a company loses a ton of money expecting what you just said but in reality the groupon shopper is neither loyal nor a full price payer. They will not go back but instead look for the next poor sap willing to go broke making someone else rich. The groupon bubble is ready to burst as the well of suckers is literally dying off. not replying to you Kuai Amazing how those that don't own think those that do are out to get those without. I rent equipment to my customers and I make it painful. I don't want to be in the rental buisness. I want them to rent it then buy it not continue to rent. Same thing for a rig, it is expensive to own and maintain and they're should be expensive to rent. It should be priced so you want to get your own as soon as possible. I bought a lazer 290 in a old vector for 800 and jumped the hell out of it because paying $25 a jump was expensive. You don't have to spend 5k on new gear if your a student and if you can't save up 1500-2k for used gear then this may not be the sport for you because it doesn't get less expensive. P.S. You'd have to ask my packer I don't pack, bad knees,neck and back. I jump pilot 188's loaded at 1.43. I bought a ZPX 188 and did not like it. gave it back for for a ZP. The ZPX felt mushy to me. Could have just been in my head but I didn't like the way it turned compared to my other one. I haven't. The 99 is the only one I have ever shot. I can't imagine shooting it with the monster brake on it.
