Can a Person Jump With (set but) Broken Bone?
Kris replied to Airhead's topic in Safety and Training
I had always heard that if someone has a rod put in after "femuring" that it was a pretty good idea to have it taken out before skydiving again. If the leg is injured again you will probably be permanently maimed because the rod is either going to bend and become almost impossible to remove, or it's going to shatter the entire femur when it bends. Although you are probably looking at an extra 8-12 weeks for the bone to fill in the now-vacant channel again before jumping it seems worth the wait. The idea of a doctor clamping the rod with a pair of vice-grips and beating them with a mallet to get the rod out has got to be a horrible visual though. Congrats. I think. I had to go there for a few days on business in July. I was actually surprised by how beautiful the mountain range around SLC was. As for the trip, I prepared myself by watching Orgazmo & SLC Punk. Although the 50+ (literally) black-suited missionaries on the flight back did make things interesting. I just pretended they were pimply FBI agents and proceeded to hide under my fold-down tray. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Actually, if you time it / do it right, you shouldn't have to run out any landing. I've brought my Stiletto loaded 1.35:1 in on hot no-winders and only needed to take a couple of short steps (bad thing to do) or just slid (right thing to do) out the last couple of feet. On a few lucky occasions I was able to save a little extra flare and used it to pop the canopy up to a gentle stand-up. Hey, Dave! What are you doing reading this? Go pump som iron! You're not a man, you're a silky-boy. Get lifting! Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

As much as I love my Mirage G3 UNISYN, I won't shell out that much cash when I can get the same options, protection, and fit out of a Wings for a lot less jump-tickets. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

In his book," Sled Driver," SR- 71/ Blackbird pilot Brian Shul writes: "I'll always remember a certain radio exchange that occurred one day as Walt (his backseater) and I were screaming across Southern California 13 miles high. We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we entered Los Angeles airspace." "Though they didn't really control us, they did monitor our movement across their scope. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its groundspeed. "90 knots" Center replied. Moments later, a Twin Beech required the same. "120 knots," Center answered. "We weren't the only ones proud of our groundspeed that day.. as almost instantly an F-18 smugly transmitted, "Ah, Center, Dusty 52 requests groundspeed readout." "There was a slight pause, then the response, "525 knots on the ground, Dusty". "Another silent pause. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my backseater. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison. "Center, Aspen 20, you got a groundspeed readout for us?" There was a longer than normal pause.... "Aspen, I show 1,742 knots" "No further inquiries were heard on that frequency" ~~~~~~~~~~ In another famous SR-71 story, Los Angeles Center reported receiving a request for clearance to FL 600 (60,000ft). The incredulous controller, with some disdain in his voice, asked, "How do you plan to get up to 60,000 feet? The pilot (obviously a sled driver), responded, " We don't plan to go up to it, we plan to go down to it." He was cleared... Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Pammi... I love you. I love strippers. But I am NEVER setting foot into a strip club with you on my birthday again. But, if you have some video you want to share of your recent adventure, I'll be glad to help with the editing! Kris "Operation Melons is a GO!" I had a Cazar PC on my first rig. I miss it more than I do the rest of the rig. "Solid" does not even begin to describe how well-made that thing was. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

***Try not to slow down all at once. Just like belly flying... you don't track at the base and slam on the breaks to take a dock. If you've got a lot of distance, blow out the forward movement. As you get closer ease down the approach gradually until you've stopped. Yes, this will take longer initially to get to the other person, but after you do it for a while you'll be able to make this one fluid movement and it will actually be faster than just hauling ass to get somewhere. If you always drive in too aggressively, you'll probably see an orbit start... since the other person is moving out of your way and turning to face you.*** Danke, Trent. I will definitely give that a go. Thanks again, Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Umm... Aren't Quark's supposed to spin? Thought it came with the whole top, charmed, strange & bottom type of Quark thing. I learned that I can pull a 180 from a sit to a head-down. The bad part is that I was trying for a 360. Darn, more jumps needed I guess. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Kris looks at the huge U2W SCSI RAID sitting next to his computer and knows the true answer... For IDE, I would go with the drive that has the lowest latency and higher throughput. Forget whether it's ATA-133 or the size of the buffer. Also, put that drive on your other IDE channel. IDE is a one-command-at-a-time interface and if it is having to swap commands between two HDD's on the same channel things get ugly in the bandwidth dept. That's why I like SCSI so much, command-queueing / prioritizing is a beautiful thing. Also, a good, fast IEEE-1394 (FireWire) drive would be a good choice as well. Just remember what I said about throughput and latency. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

I can't wait to read what April writes after reading this thread. Sorry, Viking, I wasn't trying to put you down. April just made it sound like she's looking for some wild monkey lovin' instead of Barry White and candles. You can't just rush untrained into a monkey situation. You could pull a groin muscle or something. Besides, how are you going to explain the trapeze set, the trampoline, and the entire surviving midget cast from "The Wizard of Oz" in the bedroom? This is generally true for S/L & IAD students since they have gear exposed. As an IAD JM, I am almost fully outside of the plane (except for maybe the toes of my left foot) when I am JM'ing a student. An IAD JM should be right outside and bumping shoulders with their student while they are climbing out and hanging. Over 100 students served so far with no problems. Of course, I always make sure that I am careful with my gear when I exit & re-enter the plane. The same goes for turbines. I have had to climb back in twice due to bad spots and the second time I made sure to check my BOC before re-entering. Hopefully, it's a habit that I will continue to practice. I was lucky enough to do a coach jump with Ramon on this very thing. While I seem to now have a decent forward speed when I need it, what is the best way to slow down without running the other person over or having to slide around them to avoid them? I try to lean forward a bit and bring my arms forward but I can't seem to bleed the speed off fast enough. If I get really radical with slowing down, I tend to get unstable. Any ideas? I would be very surprised if that were true. The insurance is supposed to cover any current USPA member-skydiver making a legal (i.e. non-bandit, not through clouds, etc...) jump. I would guess the person to talk to at USPA for a definitive answer would be either Jim Couch(?) or Toni at USPA. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Ummm. No. That's what your logbook and the waiver are for. The reason that the (mostly USPA Group Member) DZ want you to be a USPA member comes down to one simple thing: Insurance. As a USPA member, you carry liability insurance. The DZ, club, whatever accepts no liability from you, or you from them.,the second you sign the waiver. They just want to make sure that you have insurance in case you happen to land on a plane, power-lines, car, etc... If you cut-away a bag-lock and it crashes through the roof of a house, it's covered as a USPA member. It's really the only reason I still bother to renew. And we're back to the VX-46 thing again. Viking, April would not only break you in half, she'd make change. Have you thought about starting with some nice church-girls. Then try downsizing to mall-chicks, to college-girls, then to DZ women. April, keep faith. You can't have a dry-spell forever, you'll find someone good enough for you soon. ROFL. Carrie is the bizzomb! Viking, it's true. That would be like trying on a VX-46 for your first canopy. Yes it's hot. Yes it's great. But if you don't know how to fly it you're going to make a mess. You've got to work your way there in stages. Patience, young padawan. Yup, I got that one sprung on me at the WFFC. It does leave you speechless for a second or two when Carrie yells out, "Say it! SAY MY NAME BACKWARDS!" Bwahaha! Good times Good times.
