But... that protection is a double edged sword. It means the parents care, that they are aware of dangers in the shadows that they want to protect their children from, that they only hope that their children experience happy positive things. Those a good things. Things that a parent should want. I would much rather see a parent take interest than casual neglect. But I do agree that it should be tempered with some common sense and understanding that children do get hurt and that a golden future can not be guaranteed. At any rate... Hope the party went well. Karen I was talking to my residency director about this just the other day....about how I'm sometimes overly protective of my kid. I think, for me anyway, that it comes down to mother guilt. When I was growing up, all the moms were home. Mine let me do whatever I wanted as long as she didn't have to watch...lol. I, on the other hand (like you), work really long hours. When I'm home with Jay, he's my world. Sometimes I need to loosen the strings a bit....and I think it comes down to the fact that I feel guilty for not being there more. I have no problem working the weekends and the hours, but when it is slow and nothing going on...that kills me...ZZZZZZzzzzzzz I've been doing stuff....handing out phenergan all day...lol. Exactly - so what does it say about the parent? Not knowing her, I'd try to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that she's doing the right thing by being supportive of her daughter. BUT there are a lot of parents who just don't care what their kids do, who have never set limits or been available to guide their children. When their children mess up, those parents often stand up for them in a very beligerent way....in an "us against them" kinda way. I've screwed up plenty in my life, and my mother has always been supportive. I think she's a good mom. I don't have a clue what any of this says about the mother in the article. I think it says that we like to stick our noses in other people's problems, point our fingers at them, and blame them for the world's evils, though, rather than putting that energy into our own lives where it will do some good.... -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It is a little harsh, but I think the gist is that it's really pretty messed up for a 12 y/o to be pregnant to begin with. She smokes a pack of cigarettes a day....what kind of parent would you guess she has? Since she IS pregnant, what's her mother supposed to do? It would not help the situation to shame her publicly now. I'm still not getting your point. First you posted a picture of nuns, trying to make a connection between Islamic and Catholic women I guess? Now you're posting a picture of women in Middle Eastern countries wearing jeans and t-shirts, trying to make another connection between them and Western women???? I think that there are women who cover themselves head-to-toe whose mode of dress is chosen by them and others whose dress is chosen for them. For some there are religious, social, or legal repercussions if they do not follow the dress code. Cultures are different. Some societies are more forward-thinking than others. While there are trends that tend to define Western countries and there are trends that tend to define Islamic countries, few of those are absolutely, across-the-board true....and some of the ideas we have about others just are downright not true. WOW! Yeah. When I was a teenager, we had 6 fires in our house in 1 year. Never one before, and never one since. I can't remember how many of them were kitchen fires, though. I know two were. I'm a judgemental bastard and I'm comfortable this way. At least you recognize that it's YOUR way of seeing things and not an attitude shared by all. If you view women as sluts and realize that you're being judgmental, then that's a lot different than a person who sees women as sluts and doesn't realize that there's any other "true" way to describe these same women. When I say dressed like a slut I mean dressed like a slut I really don’t have the time or the energy to search for pics on google to tell you what I mean. That you consider women slutty who dress in some way or another only tells me about YOU....that you view women as objects, rather than of people who are deserving of respect. It makes me think that you're really angry with women for some reason or another.... There are plenty of people who see women dressed scantily who don't think of them as sluts at all. When I see men running around in shorts barely covering their bums and no shirt, I don't think of them as slutty either. Behavior, not attire, defines a slut. Access to health care. Medicaid is run differently in different states, but here (where Medicaid is well funded) impoverished women have access to healthcare through Medicaid durning their pregnancies. Medicaid pays well, and the quality of healthcare offered to pregnant women on Medicaid isn't substandard by any stretch, I don't believe. I think you'll still find a high rate of neonatal morbidity/mortality here...probably among the highest...despite willingness of providers to treat these mothers. I believe it's much more related to other social problems than to access. Where you find poverty and people who aren't well-educated, you'll also likely find people who aren't healthy to begin with, who aren't interested in obtaining medical care or are distrustful of the medical system. There are a LOT of substance abusers who don't stop using drugs during their pregnancies. There are a lot of people who don't take care of themselves, much less their children, and even much less their unborn children. As far as the woman we treated today, misskriss. She had the right to walk out of the hospital at any time. She cannot be forced to accept any medical treatment that is offered unless she's unable to make decisions for herself....even if the rest of us don't like the decisions she's making, and even if her decisions negatively affect the child she's carrying. Once her child is born, if it survives, then the child will most likely be taken into the custody child protective services.
