Problem is, is that I do not have a primary care doctor. Even though I am on disability for AIDS I do not qualify for Medicaid and after Jan 1st I am to be dropped from Medicare (I volunteered to drop myself and use the money that the government took for Medicare premiums to pay down the bills from my last visit to the AIDS doctor). As of now I have virtually no healthcare other than the V.A. and it is damn near impossible to be seen by them, plus the nearest V.A. (that will see AIDS patients) is over 200 miles away. So, with Bush and Thugs dismantling Medicare, where does this put me. Considering that I paid into the system, I feel that I do have a right to proper medical care. Although, I am sure, there are those who feel that I am a burden and should just fuck off and die. What good is something that you supported if you cannot use it? I feel that I and everyone else should be given the same medical attention that government officials recieve or that government officials should be given the same that everyone else recieves (this includes that idiot George W. Bush). Then I would still take care of your problem, and you could ignore my suggestions and just accept that I'll treat your emergent health problem...which is pretty much what most people in situations similar to yours do. :) linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Within 3 days my hand swelled to the point that it looked like a water balloon. By the end of the week my arm swelled up past my elbow and onto my shoulder. It was extremely painful. I had severe headaches, a fever above 100, severe nausea and diahrea. For the most I stayed in bed. Would I had been seen by an emergency room doctor or just told to go home? That's something that I'd treat....but I'd have to suggest that next time you decide to sit and let something fester for 3 days that you go see your primary care doctor in that time period. Unless it's a long weekend and the office is closed on a Monday or Friday, you should be able to get in to see your doctor....and the care you receive would be much less expensive. edited to add: sorry....I realize that you said a WEEK. There would be little excuse for you to use the ER for something you let go for that long without seeing your primary care doc. My GF (along with many other people) has a serious allergic reaction to wasp stings. I hope you are not suggesting that when she goes to an ER that they turn her away to possibly die. Of course not. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. ...whereupon these people will probably just go home, sick, and do nothing more because they are uninsured and thus can't afford to go their primary care docs (assuming they have one) -- and thus, they fall thru the cracks. Yes. They'll go home sick with their viral upper respiratory infection or their headache or their gastroenteritis....and they'll get over it in a few days with or without treatment. The problem is that people come to the ER with every bug bite (and I'm not exaggerating....I saw 2 people in the ER with bug bites last time I covered). And the same people come in over and over with the same ridiculous complaints. They are the biggest part of ER volume, and they contribute greatly to the inflated cost of ER care. Indeed, the law requires only a screening by a physician. I asked my mom about this (ER nurse for a couple of decades) and she has never seen or heard of this happening in practice. You are an ER physician??? Doctors who are solely ER physicians probably don't turn people away who use the ER inappropriately. If they were to do that, they wouldn't have a job. But there are many emergency rooms who are covered by physicians whose livelihoods aren't dependent on maintaining a high volume in the ER. They recently quit letting kids play football at recess at my little boy's school. This is a sport that he excels at. He understands that football was banned because a kid's arm was broken. And, BY LAW, we cannot turn them away. You're right, you cannot turn them away at the door. But physicians can, and some of us do, refuse to treat non-emergent conditions in the ER. I often tell people that the problem they've come for is an inappropriate use of the Emergency Room, and that they need to go to their primary care doc in the morning for treatment. Uhm, they gave nearly 2 billion to two guys for a website that does basicly nothing. I'd be pissed that the money was wasted in such a fashion. I'd would be thrilled to see the money going to help children, cancer and AIDS patients instead. And if the stockholders chose to give the money to children, cancer and AIDS patients, that'd be a kind thing to do. I think charitable organizations are exactly the correct entities to look to for free or reduced-fee healthcare. Healthcare isn't a right, though. Rights are protections that we have against abuses of power by the government. Provision of healthcare doesn't do that. People do not have a right to free housing or the right to free food. Well, Dr Boudreaux and I disagree, so that makes two. "most people agree that there is some level of basic health care" but nobody agrees on what exactly it is. Even establishing a basis for doing so is morally repugnant according to contemporary, popular belief systems. Not to mention that it's hugely impractical and inefficient. So you're in an automobile accident and critically injured. Nobody knows who you are or how you're gonna pay. Do you think someone should save your life? "Healthcare." I think most people agree that there is some basic level of health care that should be provided to all people regardless of their ability to pay. Emergency healthcare in situations that are truly emergent, for instance, should be provided to all people, imho. I don't think that people necessarily have the *right* to even emergent healthcare, though, but rather I think we should provide it because it's humane. The bottom line's the same either way. I don't necessarily think that the state should foot the bill, but when hospitals and physicians pay, the cost gets passed on to everyone else in the end. I'm not a fiscally-minded person, though, and I don't know the answer to that. Children should have a right to basic health care. Somewhere along that continuum of medical services it's just not feasible to provide care when there's no ability to pay. I had a patient with a positive Influenza swab yesterday. Pretty typical presentation, and this guy wasn't just horribly ill. But, it's here. I got my flu shot on Friday. .... if they really did feel that such pedophilia is an awful offense. It's not pedophilia. Pedophilia, by definition, involves prepubescent children. I don't think the play's a big deal. If I had a teenage daughter, I wouldn't want her having a sexual relationship with an adult, man or woman. If she did have such a relationship, I'd hope that she would grow from it in some way. If a child who had been sexually abused had such a relationship during her teenage years and found it to be healing, I'm glad it had a positive outcome for her....even if I think the adult she was involved with was wrong for engaging in a sexual relationship with her. Given that many, many people have had experiences that we don't condone, I can see that many people might be touched, either positively or negatively, by something like this in the theatre.
