There are good alternatives out there. The 12 steps are beneficial for some, but everybody has to find his own way. To try to "expose" the 12-steps as a lie is just silly and only exposes the would-be exposer's anger. Why would anyone be so angry at this program anyway??? It's beyond me. I think that Rational Recovery has a place for folks who think that way. Sometimes just deciding not to use and making the same decision every time the problem presents itself is exactly what a person needs to do to get on with life. For example just checking the Betty Ford, a 30 day stay runs around 23K and 38k for a 90 day program. and is probably based on a 12-step program. In-patient vs. outpatient has more to do with whether you can manage those first couple of weeks without living the program 24-7 or for need of medical detoxification than it does what type of program it's based on. The greatest majority of private inpatient programs are still 12-step programs. Those who lead meetings are people in the program, and educational degree is irrelevant. But if you're involved in psychotherapy, then your therapist or psychiatrist is formally educated and licensed. If I were really anal, I'd go through and link all the posts in which I've droned on and on about some of the reasons that our infant mortality is higher than many other countries....about social issues in the US that affects our overall health, but doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of our health care in the narrower terms in which it gets tossed about. There's a lot of bias in those statistics. Meanwhile, we DO need to see what others do that might make our system better if we were to replicate their practices. But putting new programs in place because it's done in France still doesn't address our crack cocaine problem, or the issues in poor rural areas in the US that are distinctly different from the issues in poor rural areas in France. Do they have those???? I see you point but look at what has happened to the programs you list. From what they were intended to be to what they have become is scarry Well...Medicare. Do you mean that it's really become a pretty comprehensive insurance program for all elderly and disabled people rather than a safety net for elderly indigent people? I think it's usually true that once any program is put into place, it evolves....which usually means "grows." I'm not a fan of government becoming responsible for what individuals should be responsible for. It makes people lazy and stupid, imho. But I also see where we're in a bit of a bind in terms of health care costs. The idealist in me thinks that government involvement in health care should really be minimal. The realist, though, recognizes that there are a BUNCH of folks who just ain't gonna ever be responsible for themselves. I'd like to limit the financial burden they place on the rest of us....in whatever way that is accomplished the best. The answers I see here lie on a continuum of going back to lepers segregated from society and cripples begging on the street to using government funds to meet ALL these folks' needs--food, clothing, shelter, health care (and on and on). I do kinda like the idea of some basic healthcare provided by the federal gov't while keeping the bulk of our healthcare funding private. We already have federal control of health insurance for elderly and disabled adults and poor children. Medicare pays pretty well for old folks' healthcare. I don't think quality has suffered as a result of Medicare. Medicaid ain't so great. But either way, these are basically federally-funded insurance programs. People with medicaid don't have as good of access as people with medicare, but neither has left us with "no quality" or healthcare that's impossible to get. If there were some basic healthcare provided, then I think overall our healthcare costs would go down. People would not feel as compelled, I don't think, to use (much more expensive) ERs for routine complaints. And with more access to routine healthcare, people who can't pay might just take care of health problems before they become REALLY expensive. As it is, people without the ability to pay for care are often not seen until they absolutely have to be. So instead of managing their minor illnesses, we end up taking care of (eventually with federal and state dollars) really sick people. I, personally, want better care than that for me and my family. I'll make it a priority and use private insurance and my own resources to make sure that we have much better than basic healthcare coverage. On the heels of the dirt bike theft, something pretty cool fell into my greedy hands. My other great grandfather's medical diploma!!! I have two great grandfathers that were physicians. When my grandmother died a few years ago and my aunts & uncles were going through their things, they gave me my mom's grandfather's medical school diploma from 1903. It's currently being restored and re-framed. I asked my dad's mother (whose father was my other great grandfather physician) if she knew where Dr. Robertson's diploma was, and if I could have it for my office. She didn't know. Well, tonight my father brought it to me!!! It's from Georgia in 1908, and in pretty good shape. So now I have both of my great grandfather's medical school diplomas for my office.
