the state still calls it a marriage, and they probably shouldn't. it's a civil ceremony, so it should be a civil union. marriage is a religious sacrament and should be dealt with by religions. However, its your union, so use whatever definition you're comfortable with, of course.
-
yep. they finally got rid of it not too long ago. Its sad when the courts have to force people to recognize the civil rights of others, but that's one of the reasons why they exist. nobody looks twice at desegregated schools now, or interracial marriages. I'd venture to say the same about gay marriage 15-20 years after its legalized.
-
I don't. I think ANY union sanctioned by the state should be called what it is. a "Civil Union". Marriage is a religious sacrament and should be administered by churches, not government officials, and should have no legal standing whatsoever. If someone wishes, they should be able to have both a civil union (with all the perks: tax breaks, inheritance rights, etc...) and a religious marriage performed in their church within the contraints of that church's doctrine.

I'd venture to say a large portion of the population didn't support desegregation of public schools either.

Which would you like to manage your finances?
Nightingale replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
I think I'd pick a broker. however, if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the lawyers, since the businessmen have no stake in managing anyone's money other than their own, and the lawyers would be more used to dealing with other people's finances, especially if they're into tax law or wills and stuff like that. -
Breaking the two party stranglehold.....
Nightingale replied to PhillyKev's topic in Speakers Corner
Steel said that the US was the country "most people in the world" want to come to, and that the European Union (made up of first world countries, I believe) was attempting to emulate the US. I don't believe most people in the world want to come to the US (while some may want better lots for themselves and their families, I think its more an aspect of wanting to get away from where they are, as opposed to really wanting to be here). If you compare first world countries, there are very low exodus rates, because people are fine with where they are and what they have. -
but that was his point... OUR freedom isn't free, but the Iraq war doesn't seem to have a lot to do with our freedom here in the US. Our soldiers signed up to defend the freedom of US citizens. Not Iraqi.

Breaking the two party stranglehold.....
Nightingale replied to PhillyKev's topic in Speakers Corner
I did specify "Europe" and "Japan" Mainly because I was attempting to compare countries with first world technology. I would make a guess that someone from a poorer country that was transplanted to western europe, austrailia, new zeland, japan, or a similar nation would probably also say that nation was also a "land of opportunity" because of the economic advancement opportunities provided. My point was that the US does not have an exclusive on this. -
hehe... I know the song. don't agree with the point of the parody, but I do acknowledge the skill and cleverness that went into writing it.

sure, it can work... BUT... you have to be very careful to make time to be with him. make sure your sport isn't higher on your priority list than your relationship. If it is, re-evaluate the relationship, because its flawed to begin with.

Why don't women get along with each other ?
Nightingale replied to cocheese's topic in Speakers Corner
My guess would be because women who skydive, like women who are martial artists, are typically very strong alpha personalities. if you put two strong alphas in a room together, you end up with one of two possible outcomes: mutual respect mutual antagonation they're either best friends or can't stand each other. -
my buddy Bill (fun jumper at Hollister) had the following advice: One eyed skydivers huh? Nothing but trouble they are. ;-) I once met another diabetic who had lost his eye and was a skydiver. If they have been without vision for sometime they have already learned a lot of the valuable lessons. The toughest for me was learning how to land. Or rather, re learning. I started skydiving with two eyes then had to adjust. I think the best advice, to the one eyed and two, is remember how to PLF.....

It is not ok. There is already a law stating that it is not ok. There is no need for additional legislation in this regard.

I think ALL marriages/unions should be civil unions in the eyes of the government. If people want to get married, they can do it in a church, which should have no legal standing. That way, you protect marriage in the religious sense, and get rid of discrimination by the government as to who can join their life with another person. how can the father have a legal say, and still maintain the right of a woman to have a say in what goes on inside her own body? How would you work this? are you going to force a woman to carry a child to term that she doesn't want? I specified "faith based" as an example, because its been on the republican agenda. regarding vouchers: its the job of the government to fund PUBLIC education. Not private. If a parent wants to send their child somewhere else, they're welcome to do so at their own expense. Public schools are funded by the government as an investment in society's future. Private schools aren't required to teach state standards. If a parent decides to remove a child from a public school, that's fine, but they need to foot the bill for their decision.
-
um... I answered your question. No, the law already states that that is not ok.

I didn't pick a party based on their financial policies because their social policies are more important to me. I'd rather vote for a party that will tax me more, but: support civil unions protect a woman's right to choose maintain separation of church and state protect the environment fund public education and oppose school vouchers oppose government funding of discriminatory groups ("faith based") oppose discrimination based on sexual orientation IF I could find a party that did all of the above, and didn't spend money on things that I don't think money should be spent on, yet didn't take extreme, unpractical positions, I'd be a member. However, there isn't, so I have to choose based on what's most important to me, which is the above list of issues, and pick the party most in line with how I feel about those issues.

Tough point - so if the mother gave the thug in the hypothetical situation permission to kick her in the stomach until the fetus is dead - Then that's OK? edit: how'd this get from Ditka to abortion in less than one page Nope. that's still legally wrong. by law, a person cannot consent to their own assault.

ditto.

I had a couple of proxy errors show up this afternoon, when I was going from the main page to the forums. Don't think it was on my end, because I only got the errors on DZ.com and was on a few other sites (google, ebay, livejournal) and didn't have any problems. is this happening to anyone else or is it just a fluke on my end?
