The site has grown tremendously in the past 6 months, the forums especially. As more posts are made, the server must sort through a larger database. Most people here post during the workday (check the number of posts at 8 am, noon, 5 pm, and 9 pm CST and you'll see that most of them are made during working hours), so that's when the server is slowest. More/faster servers cost more money, and as yet DZ.com is solely funded by the generosity of Sangiro (thanks Boss Man!). Blues, squares, PTiger

Dan, we may be in the same boat. After running out of excuses this afternoon, I had to admit that I've lost my nerve. It's happened to me before. I eventually found it again, and made a jump or two. This time it may be different. The "Alps" article on the front page GROSSLY misreports the death of a skydiver from my DZ. However, the fact that the AP did not see fit to get her correct age, hometown, or even the correct details of her death does not change the fact that Erin is gone. I'm not afraid of skydiving all of a sudden just because of her death. I've been worried about my safety, and in particular how my passing would hurt my family, several times before. But I was able to come to terms with that, push through the doubt, and have fantastic jumps. I think the problem is that everything I have ever taken up, I have quit after a little while. Now that habit is sneaking up on me again. Drop me an e-mail and we'll hash this out. Blues, squares, PTiger

I was told soon after I started that if I stayed in this sport long enough, I would know someone with a tib-fib. After one year, two months, and 23 days, the count is up to three already! Sorry to hear about your accident Sin. Stay strong, stick with the rehab, and soon enough you'll be so busy flirting with the nurses and therapists you won't realize your 9 months are up! Besides, you know what they say about skydivers with tib-fib fractures: they've got more pins than a bowling alley... but bigger balls too. Blues, squares, PTiger "Beer: the OTHER other white meat."

In retrospect, it was not a good idea to make this post. The weather got progressively worse as I drove to the DZ, to the point where the CASA couldn't even land. They (aircraft crew and teams from Louisburg) had to divert to Charleston. My soon-to-be ex-whuffo German exchange student got through the waivers and only had to ask for clarification twice, but we spent the rest of the time twiddling our thumbs and watching the rain come down. Here's hoping tomorrow's weather is better... Blues, squares, PTiger "Beer: the OTHER other white meat."

X-Keys in March '95. I think there's been a lot of clearing and expansion since then; check out the nearby golf course - a pre-approved out as long as you don't swoop the greens (near the end of the video). At first glance the runway at Blue Sky Adventures, my current home DZ, looks really big. Then you realize that you're looking at the drainage/swoop ditches cut to protect the runway and scare AFF students. The windsock indicator just NW of the runway has been moved to the hangar side, just so us howffos can't land there anymore . Lastly, in this image my house is at the very top, in line with the S in "United States" on the top caption. A larger view of my neighborhood shows my elementary school at the bottom right, my middle school just above the center, and my high school at the top right. Whats your Name and what do you do for a living?

2 of the abstractors in our office had a race to see who would get all 46 SC county courthouses first. I agree that they're beautiful buildings. If you think about it, until very recently when the southern states' population started urbanizing, county courthouses were probably the only centers of government that most people came in contact with. They HAD to look grand, if only to keep up appearances. -

Time for the Pointless Reminiscence of the Day: On my first AFF IV, I was in the saddle at 8000 ft or so. It was a bit nipply out to begin with, and the extra mile of altitude didn't help. My hands started feeling really blocky, which didn't really worry me until I took them out of the toggles to try and turn my radio up. The radio was at max volume (and probably past max range, which was the real problem), and all of a sudden my hands can't find the toggles anymore. I can look at the toggles, and I can look at my hands, and I can use my arms to make my hands follow the toggles around, but my damn hands won't get into the toggles anymore. At this point I started reviewing my tree landing and PLF procedures reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally thoroughly. Fortunately, my hands started cooperating again after about 20 seconds tucked under my chin, and I got them back into the toggles. Very scary moment, though. I HIGHLY recommend an online escrow service. I bought one rig through Tradenable.com, and I'm happy that I used the escrow service because I eventually sent it back (harness was too small). Tradenable charges a small percentage that you can split with the other party. They use package tracking to ensure that it's received, and once it's received the buyer has a pre-agreed amount of time to check it out, have it inspected, and try it before the money is released to the seller. My name is Dan Korn and I'm an altiholic. This fall I'll be a sophomore at Princeton University, where I study skydiving websites, skydiving movies, skydiving clubs, and procrastination. I'll probably major in Politics, with a minor in Computer Science. Right now I'm living at home, taking summer courses at the good old U of SC, and working part-time as an SCS (Server Crashing Specialist) for a large real estate law firm. I'm trying to decide between earning a rigging ticket or a CCNA in the next 2 years. Shout out to BrokenEagle for the title abstracting - have you ever done work for Dan Bridgers in Conyers? And have you taken a picture of every county courthouse in the state and put it up on your wall yet? Blues, squares, PTiger "Beer: the OTHER other white meat." -
I enjoyed the FF games more than any others because Squaresoft seemed to put more emphasis on plot and character development than gameplay and graphics (not that the latter two ever suffered). I'm a little wary of the movie because most of the reviews I've read say that the graphics outshine the story (pun intended). Kind of ironic - a game that emphasizes story becomes a movie that emphasizes graphics. Regardless, I'll go see it this weekend - two or three times if it's good. (Can't jump because the elbow surgery recovery is going slower than they originally thought... GRRRRRRRRRRR.) Blues, squares, PTiger "Beer: the OTHER other white meat."

Ah, you refer to the DZ.com Hump:Jump:Beer™ loadings. Skreamer originated the concept of hump loadings so you should ask him what counts for the first number and what doesn't. No doubt he'll enjoy getting all the details so he can make a fully informed ruling. The Jumps number is one for each time you leave the aircraft and land. Doesn't matter how much altitude, how big of a formation, crazy props, whatever. The Beer number is for each case newly owed, so that we can tell how many firsties (or stupidies, like landing over the beer line) you've achieved. The H:J:B is just numbers; it can't be a perfect measurement. Of course, if you wanted to get detailed you'd just post it outright, wouldn't you?

Does anyone else think that naming your child (and future skydiver) after the man with the first total mal in the history of human flight is a bad idea?

Shades can work pretty well. I've worn close-fitting sunglasses on a jump and didn't have too much of a problem with them. I noticed that with my head up, they wobbled a little but didn't let in much air. If I lowered my head any, they wobbled a lot more and my eyes started to tear up. Did you land them without flaring (as if you were unconscious)? If the new, smaller reserve will be loaded heavily enough to put you in harm's way w/o a flare, you may not need to downsize that reserve. Blues, squares, PTiger "Beer: the OTHER other white meat."

Idea's on how to make student rigs more barable?
PalmettoTiger replied to Viking's topic in Gear and Rigging
Just a note on the legstrap tightness: I was really nervous before my first jump on my own gear (beer, yeah, I know), and I cinched those straps down waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tight. I was under canopy by 4500'. By 1500', my feet were starting to tingle because my legstraps were reducing the circulation in my legs! Adjusting them so that they were on the backs of my legs didn't help all that much. Lesson: Tight, but not too tight.
