I got Rosetta Stone software so I can learn German.
skydiver30960 replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
The Rosetta Stone is a great program, developed right here in my home town of Harrisonburg VA. I have Levels I and II of Russian sitting here collecting dust (unfortunately) because of all the other schoolin' I have going on. good stuff for anyone looking to learn a language outside a normal classroom... Back in college me and my roomates (three engineers and a communications major, all together) made a still out of common household items that had NO earthly place in the production of anything for human consumption. Making wort took too long, but we found that if you took all the half-empty, too-nasty-to-finish, plastic 1/2 gallon jugs of rotgut liquor that were sitting 'round our friends' place and ran them through the still, that what came out the end was the finest white lightning around! So many brain cells lost... I wonder why I keep mixing up my right and left all the time now... Elvisio "remember: right if I want it quick, left if I want it to feel like somebody else" Rodriguez

I have been entrusted with two cassette tapes of the Christmas Carols that my family used to listed to while we gathered around the tree each year. We're talking classic stuff: the Reader's Digest Choir sings the classics and the Sesame Street/ Muppet Show gangs get together to do some wicked renditions! I know, pretty low-powered stuff nowadays, but it's the stuff memories are made of right? THE POINT OF MY POST: Nobody in the family owns a cassette player anymore, at least not one that I would trust with these family treasures. So, I want to get them burned onto CD so that the fam can continue to wallow in chintzy nostalgia each holiday season. I'm having a hell of a time finding anyone local who can handle this. So: does anyone online here have the gear or know someone who has the gear to burn the cassettes onto CD for me? I'm not looking for them to be digitally remastered or anything, just put on disc. Thanks; you guys are my heroes; Elvisio "Riverbottom Nightmare Band" Rodriguez

My thoughts are more along kid vs. kid violence rather than the random person vs. kid violence mentioned in the article. We are not going to solve these problems; the best thing we can do is try to help the kids solve these problems for themselves. We need to help the kids find ways to get around these needs for violence before it gets too great for them to control. In Social Studies, spend a little less time talking about the Louisiana Purchase and a bit more learning about the modern-day stresses on adolescents and how they can deal with it. Show kids how they can help each other without being percieved as "tattling" to Da Man. Make sure schools quit cutting (and bring back, if already lost) the "fluff" subjects like Music, Theater, and Art. In the past, these classes were routes of expression and pressure release for children, now they're gone. Bring back gym class and recess. Kids are kids, they have TONS of energy and need an outlet for it. I know there's a pecking order in these classes and on the schoolground, but I'd rather my kid got a bloody nose from a Dodgeball game than a bloody stump from a hollowpoint .45. There will always be violence at schools. Lets face it: being a teenager sucks, we were all there once. You're expected to act like an adult, but aren't given the liberties of an adult. Kids are busy feeling out the balance between their instincts and their social upbringing. We were all there, all felt the stress. The reason those of you on this board aren't dead or in jail is that you found more healthy ways of dealing with the stress. These are the methods we need to pass down. Sorry, I don't think home schooling is the answer. Sorry, I don't think gun control is the answer. Sorry, I don't think kid control (aka lockdown) is the answer. I have not been inside a mall in over 3 years.
skydiver30960 replied to Muenkel's topic in The Bonfire
The only change I've noticed about malls over time is that as I get older and older, the mall rats get younger and younger, and therefore more and more annoying. Good deal managing to stay away! Elvisio "blue light special" Rodriguez -

Settle a bet: are USED Star Wars toys worth anything?
skydiver30960 replied to skydiver30960's topic in The Bonfire
My mom gave away our old Apple IIE. It was the moster of its time: color monitor, mouse, joystick, double disk drive, dot matrix printer, and (if you can believe it) 512K of RAM. I told her if she held onto it a bit longer she'd be able to donate it to the Smithsonian, it was in such good shape. But nope, she put it out on the curb with the rest of the garbage. ...damn thing was snatched up by some passerby ten minutes later, she told me. To which my reply was "SEE WHAT I MEAN!" Settle a bet: are USED Star Wars toys worth anything?
skydiver30960 replied to skydiver30960's topic in The Bonfire
I have a garbage bag (yes, a garbage bag) full of the Star Wars toys I played with when I was a kid just sitting in my spare room. Millenium Falcon, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, a bunch of other vehicles, and enough action figures to choke an army of family pets. These are the toys that I abused mercilessly when I was kneehigh to a grasshopper. My cousins then inherited and also abused the same gear. We're talking seriously used gear, here. My family (parents, aunts, uncles) swear this stuff is worth MAJOR ching if I sell it. I contend that being HEAVILY used, and the fact that the boxes for this stuff are now twenty years deep in the Erie, Pennsylvania landfill, that the toys and figures are worth shit on the market. So waddaya think? Lemme know, meanwhile I'm gonna put the wings on the Tie-Fighter and run around the house "eeeeerrrrrrr.... pow! pow! Zap! Zing! LUKE! I'm your father!" and see if I can scare the cats into cardiac arrest. I don't think that one little red light and that sick little buzzer that sounds when you push the trigger will do much to them though... Elvisio "edited because I forgot my signature" Rodriguez -
Dough, the stuff that buys me beer; Ray, the guy who sells me beer; Me, the guy who's drinking beer; Fa, a long way to go for beer; So, I'll have another beer; La, I'll have another beer; Tea, no thanks I'm drinking beer; and that will bring us back to DOH! Happens to me too, especially when I get really smashed. I figured my body was doing it to me as punishment, so that I could experience every moment of the upcoming hangover without sleeping through any of it. And I hate my body for it. Elvisio "I'll show my body whatfor, gimme a beer!" Rodriguez

How Freaking hard is it to get a FAST Food order correct?
skydiver30960 replied to leroydb's topic in The Bonfire
I've never worked in fast food, but I've always sympathized with the plight of these miserable bastards. I mean, we bitch about "Why can't they get my order right?" But I'm sure they're bitching just as hard about "Why can't the damn customers just order right from the friggin' menu?" As a rule, I never make exceptions or substitutions at a fast food joint. Remarkably, my orders are nearly always perfect. REMEMBER, they're getting paid minimum wage. How much of a shit would YOU give about your job if you were making minimum wage? Are we closer to the return of the draft?
skydiver30960 replied to deeter's topic in Speakers Corner
Sorta-hijack: is the increase in max age considered slightly more palatable in the light of higher technology being used by recruits (i.e. college degrees are good) and the fact that transportation options have increased (troops don't have to walk everywhere quite as much as they used to)? Or is this strictly a Ride of the Four Horsemen kind of thing signalling the impending collapse of the American Military Complex? What have the max ages for the respective branches been increased to? Elvisio "don't worry, I only hijack threads" Rodrigeuz -
