I've never got into F1 racing for all the reasons above until this season. They've changed a load of the rules that makes it all much more competative - hell, a scratch team is out performing all of the other big manufacturers at the moment! Even qualifying is quite interesting now as it's a mini competition in itself with knockout phases and tyre implications for the main event. Monaco's a great circuit, but as people have stated above, not the best for overtaking action.

A very quick one that some of you lot across the pond might be able to help me with. I've got to arrange a landline / broadband for our new office in California and a little local knowledge would be helpful. Are there any phone companies that you'd particularly recommend or (perhaps more importantly!) one's that I should avoid? thanks!
-
The idea should be transferred to the entire landing area rather than the jumper. If a sensor on the jumper above the landing area detects constant velocity at a set altitude, POOF! A giant air-bag covering the whole landing area inflates. Instant bouncy-castle! Admittedly, it might suck for those on final.

Andy, some of the speedflying wings from paragliding manufacturers such as Gin and BioAir still use trim tabs on their risers. There are pics on their sites. I've already seen them cause one accident when they were miss-set.

Groundlauching South California - locals wanted!

So, I'm moving out to the US in about a month and will finally have a chance to do some flying. Is there anyone in the area who'd be interested in showing someone new any existing sites / places to stay clear of and introducing me around? -
Holy post bump Batman!

Drinking beer and skydiving? We're opening a branch office of our design management company out there. Project management, basically.

Hurrah! Finally, after 5 months of submitting paperwork and waiting for transatlantic post backwards and forwards, the US government has decided to let me come and work in Southern California! I have 4 weeks to pack my life into small boxes and get it on a ship. I hate moving. I'll be moving to the Carlsbad / Vista area. If any dz.com folks are local, the first beer's on me when I get out there.

The Sabre and Sabre 2 are very different animals. The Sabre 2 is a step up in performance from your original Sabre - don't be misled by the same name! You don't mention how many jumps you had before you quit? Don't be surprised to have to make a few jumps on something a little larger and more docile before you're allowed on that 150.

Can you explain what you mean by this JP? How does one get 100 camera jumps if jumping with a camera doesn't count? Do they have to be dedicated team video slots?

Are PD mains bigger than advertised, just like PD reserves?
yoink replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
I wouldn't compare the two -Unless you're comparing either a GLS / GLX / Ballistic type wing that has a similar skydiving style planform and input characteristics to a skydiving wing. They're made with different characteristics and don't really compare that well due to the large differences in handling. -
I disagree with this approach to managing wind conditions 100%. I would discourage anyone from using this approach when makign decision about their personal safety. Wind speed and conditions are a huge factor in your skydive, and need to be treated as such. This is not an area to be taken lightly, and a cavalier attitude in this area can lead to serious injuries or death. As much as I hate to do it, looking at the posters profiel reveals a very high WL on both main and reserve with a short time in the sport, and jump numbers well below what Brain Germains WL chart would call for at those loadings. Please take these factors into consideration before taking advice from this person. I've just noticed that he's apparently an instructor too...

I'm going to stay in the plane. You want to jump in 15mph gusts, go for it. Canopy collapses make for great video...

I'm having to write a job specification that will be used in the US later this year, but more immediately as part of my visa application for my move to California. Our UK one talks about 'Bachelor' and 'Masters' degrees as levels of competancy. Do these terms translate to the US, or do you guys call them something else? If they don't translate, a Bachelor degree is usually the first degree taken at university and is generally a 3 or 4 year course, from the age of 18. A Masters is done after an initial degree and can be upto another 3 years. Any help gratly appreciated!

Holy crap! I stand corrected. It is possible! I stand by the 'monumentally stupid' though!! The idea that both the tandem pair would be wearing suits didn't occur to me.
-
No, it wouldn't work. It'd also be monumentally stupid. Next.

Crikey... people seem a bit keen to give the 'bowling ball' speech! If the student is just off radio, I'd be surprised if they've had a great deal of canopy training, been taught the accuracy trick of judging if they're going to clear an obstacle or even if they're confident in flying on their own yet, and you're saying they're not fit to skydive??? These things happen to students! Perhaps a better solution would be to actually teach the student something...? You're supposed to be an instructor after all. How about taking them through flat turns? How about giving them some canopy skills that aren't covered in the first jump course? How about giving them the knowledge that allows them to make decisions earlier when accidents can be avoided? Edit: Doh! Paul beat me to it...

Thanks, that's the sort of thing I was after.

No one wants to jump with a newbie :(
yoink replied to katzg08's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've been thinking about this for a few days as I had a little difficulty with the story. Given that I don't jump anymore, can I ask - don't people just fun jump anymore? Is all jumping now team orientated? What happened to rocking up to the DZ and slinging together a jump out of the people that were there at the time?
