Rather than cluttering up the thread in the incidents forum on the Level 1 cypres fire, I though I'd ask my questions in here. I did all my training SL, so my knowledge of the specific levels of AFF is a little weak. On a level 1 jump, what must be happening for BOTH instructors to release the student? I would have guessed that the primary's 1st concern on that jump would be keeping hold of the student and deploying for them if it becomes necessary - even if it's a really ugly dive? Again, no implied critisism of the instuctors involved is intended, but I was curious how difficult it is for a student on a level 1 to lose both instructors down to cypres level?

Don't forget the BASE rig for 300ft pulls, either. Edit: Doh. Must Not Feed The Trolls

Joze Gonzales' version of Heartbeats - not too difficult and there are loads of tutorials and tabs available for it. getting tougher - John Meyer - Neon but Asturias would rock if played round a campfire... pity it's bloody impossible to us mortals.

PDFT - Expedition Italy 2009 (more info)
yoink replied to m0ng00se007's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Most of the flying that others are doing in the Dolomites aren't on ski slopes either. The big runs are reached by heli-drop off, and as for the speed wings not being similar to canopies, I've a 105sq ft crossbraced speedwing that's based on the JVX... Some might be more similar than you think. I'm aware that flying in the mountains is dangerous. I've been speed flying for the last 3 years but the added dangers aren't something that gets massively reduced simply by increasing the number of skydives you've made. There are hazards in the mountains that are unique to that environment that specific training will mitigate - knowledge of turbulence, avalanches, weather patterns. My point is, they're using skydiving limits for something that isn't wholly skydiving, but then not knowing exactly what they're up to, and if I was them, I guess I'd err on the side of caution too. Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a fantastic time. I'm only slightly envious of anyone who goes. -

Those are some pretty high requirements.... especially considering skiiers are flying in those mountains with speedwings not too far from those loadings with zero skydives.... Not that I think those guys are right, but that requirement seems a little high to me. -
Any particular reason you're asking?

Without knowing the extent and location of his injury, as well as the prognosis, along with having a background in neurology, I can't see how you can possibly make the recommendation that any modern canopy will be OK to jump? Kevin - if you're working with one of the best people in the field, give him the data and then trust his judgement. If you tell him the average G-forces experienced over opening, along with average time and what it can spike to in the event of a hard opening he'll be able to give you some good guidance - but it'll probably be 'I wouldn't recommend it until you're completely better'... Remember, the sky isn't going anywhere. It'll be there when you're fully healed, but possibly aggrevating a serious brain injury doesn't sound like a good option to me. I'd be thinking 'what if a worst case scenario happened' rather than 'how can I get back in the air fastest'... Heal fast.

Ahh, that one we can let slide as its spelt different here. It is Aluminium here... hence the extra syllable Can we be pedantic about oregano? It's or-re-GAH-no, not o-REG-a-no

I agree, Tony... can I add that it's 'couldn't care less', not 'could care less'...?

Do high glide ratio canopies exist, i.e. 6:1?
yoink replied to jumpflorida's topic in Gear and Rigging
Several. I think you'll have difficulty packing a 28m2 paraglider into a container designed for a 200 sqft parachute, not to mention all the lines. I think you need to have experience flying paragliders before jumping under one. They're loaded very lightly and have different flying and malfunctioning characteristics to parachutes. Paragliders aren't designed to open after jumping from a plane. How do you know the stiching will take it? How do you know the material simply won't blow out? How are you going to design and manufacture a slider for it that won't cause a malfunction? Do you understand why you'd need a slider? What about risers? Are they dsigned for opening shock? There are a lots and lots of reasons why it's shot down so quickly. Read through the Gear forum and really get to understand how parachuting gear works and you'll be able to come up with your own reasons. Can it be done? Yes - there are a few videos around of people jumping paragliders from baloons and planes in special d-bags that open right away, similar to a static line opening. Is it a bright idea to be a test jumper for a wing doing something that it wasn't designed for? Probably not so much... Use the right tool for the job. -
There's all sorts of rabid fanboy posts here, just as there always are in any computer thread, in just about every forum I've ever seen. I still don't get why people are so polar when it comes to a computer. You know what. Either will work. And either will break. And yes, I own both. selbbub, if you're only wanting to use it for music, pictures and word processing, you don't need a lot of power from the processor, or even RAM. Honestly, you could do all of that on a machine 10 years old without trouble... Unless you're storing thousands of photos, and thousands of music tracks, 250 - 300GB of hard drive space should be ample. Ask that your machine has the capacity to upgrade with another hard drive later should you need it. Be realistic about how much stuff you're going to put onto the machine and what you're going to use it for. Ask the guys at the store what programs come with the machine and tell them what you want to do on it & Don't be talked into some super computer designed for video editing or gaming unless you need it.

This is the only thing that would make me paraglide. I've seen the round reserves you nutters use!

I need Some good Questions to ask!!
yoink replied to Da_SKiES_R_BLu's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Would a buying a velocity 79 for a first canopy make me cooler and more socially acceptable a the dz? Which wingsuit should I get for my consoles? A GTI or a V2? How do I get into Style? What's the best camera for me to use to film my jumps? Can I breathe in freefall? Do you go up when the parachute opens? -
HEY!!! any guys out there between the ages 16-18?? Please tlk to me:D

Rearrange the following sentence to create a well know and educationally correct phrase... Before the lock in. -
[off topic] Groundlaunching is the cool thing to be doing now, and since it's unregulated, lower time pilots think they can get into it a lot easier than swooping. However, the message that those of us that are doing it should be very clear: 1) Groundlaunching is not the place to build canopy skills to take to skydiving. 2) Groundlaunching must be done under expert tuition. 3) Skydiving piloting isn't the only knowledge to need to safely launch off hills / mountains. & 4) Being hurt and alone on a mountain is a miserable way to die. Get good at piloting first, then learn to fly off stuff.

Massive props to all involved! Can you imagine how scary that would be? First of all you suddenly go blind, which would probably freak most people out anyway, then you remember you're flying solo in a light aircraft! I can't think of many worse places to be!

Snowkite crossover - Ozone Speedflying
yoink replied to powerline's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Nothing planned yet, but I might try and find some cash for something. The only bad news is that you need a paragliding licence to fly anything in Swizerland... I might try Austria. Grr. -
Snowkite crossover - Ozone Speedflying
yoink replied to powerline's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
hey, I fly an Ozone Bullet 12 and an Aeros Ballistic 105 for speedflying. The Bullet is an 07 model with a slight tendency to oversteer and a much higher roll component in its turns than most skydive wings. It's also easier to launch, however. Have fun! -
Never assume people on the ground will see you before you set-up. You're the pilot - pick a safe area for swooping. You're best assuming everyone else is blind, deaf and stupid when it comes to your safety. You certainly should not be performing 'low carving turns around anybody'. Treat people as a hazard to avoid.

Brian Germain's Lotus & Samurai canopies are both airlocked too. This will explain airlocks to youhttp://www.bigairsportz.com/airlocks.php and you'll see why it's different to just a nose profile.

Just go and talk to your instructors and trust them. I'm prepared to bet that they'll tell you to get off dz.com and relax a little. Smile. It's supposed to be fun.

Anyone going from Phoenix to Eloy the weekend after next?
yoink replied to yoink's topic in The Bonfire
I'm being sent out to AZ for the first time next monday for a couple of weeks and it'd be a pity not to see Eloy while I'm there. Obviously, there'll be a fine involved! Is anyone going to / from Eloy on the weekend of the 7th and fancies giving a visitor a lift?
