  1. Misrouted, yes. There was also a recent fatality in hawaii due to misrouting the PC bridle on an unknown rig. What's your point?
  2. I figure that my alarm system would send most right back out the way they came in. That doesn't change the fact that they could pose a serious risk to your loved ones. I don't care about my stuff, stuff is stuff. But it isn't far fetched that some one with enough lack of concern for the law to break into a private residence could also commit more heinous acts. True or false, a home invader that could steal your TV also has the physical capacity to hurt your 6 year old daughter? True. BUT, you've been posting like your first action upon finding someone in your house would be to whip out a cannon, slap on some war paint and quite happily hunt them down and kill them. It's the attitude that scares me more than anything... I have to admit, I don't like everybody being armed to the teeth, but if you have to own a gun, I believe you have to take every reasonable step to prevent yourself murdering someone based on a series of false assumptions - as much for your sanity as anything else! ;) Again though, I may be nieve, but I buy into the 'prevention is better than cure' philosophy.
  3. Your argument assumes black and white. If someone is in your house then they intend you or your family harm. I've no doubt that you won't be shifted from this position. I much prefer the hiding / calling the police option and letting them take the bloody TV rather than becoming a murderer based upon an assumption. That's why it's insured, after all. The point is that shooting someone should be a last resort, not a first one. What the hell is 'a reasonable assumption' and does your definition of one meet everyone elses?
  4. He is very selective about what things he cites from sources (not that you're going to put something in your book that doesn't support your argument). This selectiveness leads to misrepresentation of what some of these people like S.L.A. Marshall were actually saying. I don't know whether he's an ass or not, but he's a sloppy historian. Zach Thats part of my reason for not really giving him or his book as much credit as others do. If you google him I bet you can find a video of him speaking at an event. I find his speeches to be on par with his writing. Imagine someone writing a book on skydiving and that person had never actually been skydiving, but relied on others information as a foundation of the book and then throws in some psycho babble for the remaining chapters. That's pretty much my view on his book. Although, his referencing other studies proves insightful, if you go back and reference the actual studies, most of which are well known and have helped shape the way we train today. That's a perfectly valid research route and makes up 80% of academia! Of course it doesn't help if the conclusions are erroneous or the writer has their own agenda. That's all I wanted to point out. The rest of this thread terrifies me.
  5. I have thought about that a lot. After doing high load spirals in a BASE harness with a speed glider I concluded that the control and 'comfort' I have in a seated ultralight
  6. furthermore, the harnesses that these gliders were tested/designed for use on make riser input awkward. weight shift is far superior as far as the flow of control goes, as well as the efficiency of the glider. I'll agree with the first, through not necessarily the second point though. As for harnesses, I've a custom made standing harness. I've tried a few seated ones and personally, they're not for me. Comfort, control and familiarity aside, I still don't like flying close to the ground in a position that puts my spine in a position to impact first if something goes wrong.
  7. Poor use of English? Check. Offering to overpay? Check. Involving a non-named 3rd Party? Check. Using Western Union? Checkity check. Hits 100% on my scam-o-meter.
  8. You have it backward. Take a canopy on just risers out into the wind and try flying it. You will find that it flies best when you are gripping part way up the front risers, effectively shortening the front lines and lengthening the rear lines. That rather depends on the canopy and the strength of the wind. In light winds it's better keeping the wing just rear of its neutral position above you, so a little tension on the rears helps. In stronger winds all this does is create a huge air brake that drags you along the ground or into the water.
  9. Most paraglider type speedwings (nano, bullet, nooky, swoop etc) are far more elliptical than skydiving wings, particularly at the nose. From memory, I think the Jedi was the only skydiving canopy with a large elliptical shape in the front? Someone here will correct that I'm sure! You're right though, the recovery arc on all of those wings is uber-short. 10's of feet in many cases, and of course you have neither front nor rear risers to input with. On the other hand, they are usually far more sensitive to harness input than many skydiving wings.
  10. Holy thread bump batman! Groundlaunching / Speedflying technology has come on a looooong way in the last 3 1/2 years which is when the comments you're responding to were posted. As for 'superior gliders', it depends on what type of flying you want to do, in what conditions, over what sort of terrain and with what control inputs. Just like in skydiving, some wings are better than others at different things. Also, just like in skydiving, 300 launches is still in the 'learning' stage. Be careful & look out for your students. You don't know it all yet.
  11. That's shit mate! Glad you're OK though. Could have been a hell of a lot worse on a dual carriageway with a lorry coming up behind you! Oil on the road? Metal grate? Too many beers down the pub?
  12. Only if you value the winning over everything else. Some people think that winning something without deserving it isn't worth anything. Who deserves to win is decided by the committee. Their prize, their decision. No doubt. My values, My opinon. You are entitled to your opinion on who deserves the prize. Your opinion is totally irrelevant, but you are entitled to it. Gee, thanks! The original post was asking why people would feel aggrieved that Obama won the peace prize - not whether he deserved it, or won it legitimately. I've provided a possible rationale for that feeling, which can only be based on opinion and personal moral values - those being the basis of emotion. So while the opinion is irrelevent to the outcome of the prize, it's entirely relevant to the topic of the thread.

  15. In the next 5 years I intend to develop clean nuclear fusion and a system to remove excess Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere... Can I have my Nobel prize for Physics now please?
  16. Per that article, the 127 address might not be the best one to use.
  17. Damn right! It took me 2 months of weekends to make my first jump... just refresher courses over, and over, and over and over... bloody British summer weather!
  18. I've no problem with most of the adverts here, but the new Sabaru one that shows from the top of the main index page which now 'splatters' mud across the entire screen, and then takes a few seconds to show a 'close' button is the worst form of advertising. It actually gets in the way of the usability of the forum. How about limiting advertising to the advertising spaces??
  19. dosent answer the question, but a mirage would solve his problem! As would buying a Racer, Voodoo, Teardrop or even probably a new Jav. Not particularly useful advice, however.
  20. Particularly if you're jumping in the UK... 200 jump minimum and CCI approval there.
  21. This is surprisingly addictive. Make your own loops using multiple tracks, instruments, timings and volumes and share with friends. Nudge! and my first attempt:linky

    Turn it off?

Exactly what I did when I moved out here. It's amazing how much time you get back from not vegitating in front of crap telly.
